It blew my mind how much easier the exercise was the second time around. I needed this video because my name is Jenny and even though people in my native language always understand it correctly, I realised that foreigners think I'm saying Denny. I hope this video actually helps me fix it with some practice.

Excellent teaching video!!! (I teach English to Spanish-speakers and tutor reading for elementary children just learning to read.) Some of the other videos I found that offer guidance on pronouncing the 'j' sound were helpful, but this one is by far the best. [One small critique, however: In reciting your tongue twister the speaker does not pronounce the 'j-d' sound at the end of the word "changed," so sounds like "change"; and as you undoubtedly know, it's so important for listeners to hear the 'd' sound (sometimes better sounded as a light 't') at the end of a past-tense verb, even if it's just a light touch.]
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 2 года назад
Thank you! We're glad to hear that they are helpful for teachers. Regarding the "changed" pronunciation in the tongue twister - we might have overdone it while doing the sound processing, that's why the final sounds may seem weird.

@@SoundsAmerican Thanks for the explanation. My point was a small one, and in the end, it is the overall excellent quality of your teaching video that counts. The sound of the speaker's voice and his pronunciation are clear and precise. This video is going to help a lot of people. Kudos!

Please make a vid on silent letters that are silent only in American English, such as the letter N in the word interview, the N in the word winter and so on. Would be great to have a comprehensive list of words with the silent N, something like "top 200" and whatnot.

I hope you can say each single sound more times than you did in the videos - maybe 1 minute for that before you move to other explanations or the part that combines the sounds with other letters (because I learn sounds by imagining how native speakers sound and then imitate, so when I hear it with other letters/explanations, it interrupts my imagination) Thanks for your lessons. Thank you! This video is really helpful. Can I ask you a question? As a Korean, I'm not sure if I understand the pronunciation. Sometimes, [dʒ] sounds like [tʃ], when it is at the end of words. and When I heard some examples like "church" and "judge", their last pronunciations also sound like the same to me. It's really difficult for me. If [dʒ] sound is at the end of a word, is it pronounced like unvoiced ? I've really spent lots of time to understand the difference between them. Please let me know how to pronounce exactly. Thank you
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 11 месяцев назад
Don't worry, the /dʒ/ sound is very hard for most Korean speakers. Here are our tips: 1) Americans never devoice consonant sounds, meaning they never pronounce /dʒ/ as /tʃ/ 2) Americans never substitute /dʒ/ with /ɡ/ 3) The most common spellings for the /tʃ/ sound are 'CH', 'T', and 'TCH' 4) The most common spellings for the /dʒ/ sound are 'G', 'J', and 'DG' 5) The only way to master any foreign sound is to practice it a lot. soundsamerican.net/article/consonant_sound_ch_as_in_chair - soundsamerican.net/article/consonant_sound_dzh_as_in_job

BTW, we believe that in Russian, these are two sounds /д/ and /ж/ and not a single phoneme. (In case you're interested, here's an excellent resource listing all sounds in all languages: phoible.org/parameters/C7364BE7F76504D8DE329FFF30C42424#2/33.8/153.0 )

@@SoundsAmerican This time I spoke about Belarusian (not Russian) language. We have two state languages Russian and Belarusian in Belarus. Unfortunately, I'm not a linguist but let's try to figure out. There are two different sounds \d̠ʒ\ and \ɖʐ\ in IPA. The first one occurs in English and the second one in Belarusian. The difference in sounding is hard to notice.(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_retroflex_affricate ). You can find live pronunciation of Belarusian "дж" , for instance, here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NjoY8lr8goU.html at 1:21. Concerning Russian language, there are few borrowed words where you can find sound similar to \d̠ʒ\. For example, "джинсы" (jeans), "джем" (jam).
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 5 лет назад
+Денис Василевский Yes, the Belarussian /ɖʐ/ is very similar to the American /dʒ/! We are able to hear the difference, but it is indeed hard to notice. About the Russian language, Wikipedia insists that the same sound /ɖʐ/ is the one used in the word "джем," and they do sound very similar. The only concern is that it doesn't seem like the native Russian sound, now we feel the urge to learn more about the history of Russian (and Belarussian 😉) phonetics :). This is some cool nerdy stuff, isn't it? :)

@@SoundsAmerican Yes it is! I'm quite inquisitive guy and it is interesting to me to learn about of peculiarities and underwater rocks of the languages, although, my occupation is electronics.)) Seems so, I can distinguish the difference between /dʒ/ and /ɖʐ/ after this research. The /dʒ/ sounds more solid (joint) to me while in the /ɖʐ/ /d/-part is more noticeable. Although, a language is very fluid conception and hardly every native speaks exactly as it is stated in Wikipedia or IPA sources.)) Feel free to ask about Russian or Belarusian If you wish! It's free.))

@@SoundsAmerican He's right, the /dʒ/ sound exists in the Russian language, the only difference is that it's pronounced without a puff of air at the beginning of the words due to the fact that in the Russian language both the /t/ and the /d/ sounds are pronounced without any puffs of air. The sound /tʃ/, however, has a voiceless counterpart in the Russian language, it's called the /ч/ sound.

Hi guys, I am really greatful with your professional work, it has been helping me a lot! I got a doubt, during my daily practice in this channel, speceally in this episode, I could notice something, It's me or it changes when I have to use dʒ at the beginning for example "jaw" just....on the other hand words such as page or change it sounds like SH or CH, for me this is tricky haha and confusing, due to it is located at the end and I feel like it is not the same sounds like at the begining, greetings from Costa Rica
