Startling piano-writing underpins this exotically rhythmic fantasia which includes lovely solo voice, chorus and wonderful strings. I suppose it is now Lambert's most famous composition but, when this fabulous performance was first released, I seem to recall that it renewed interest in a work that had, at the time, fallen out of favour.
