Hundreds of years of Imperial History behind him. Escape and become a relic of history; an irrelevant coward? No, he stood with his city at the final battle as the last of his once glorious empire was swallowed up before him, dying not as an object of the lessons of history, but as a legend.

“God forbid that I should live as an Emperor without an Empire. As my city falls, I will fall with it. Whosoever wishes to escape, let him save himself if he can, and whoever is ready to face death, let him follow me.” Constantine XI Palaiologos F
As a Turk I must say that the last emperor of rome had huge balls. Dying with your soldiers with honour, trying to defend your people to the last breath is something that deserves respect. Wish Mehmed II the Conqueror actually found his corpse, as far as we know he wanted him to be buried with full military honors.
Constantine didn't found it. He just renamed an already existing city called Byzantium. Hence why the Eastern Roman Empire is also known as the Byzantine Empire.
@@NobleS1236 True, but it was based on constantine's name the city was called. I personally find it odd that Byzantium is more well known by outsiders as an empire and not a city, exact opposite of it's original inhabitants.
Actually Byzantines because most of them regarded themselves as greek during that time. Only some of them regarded themselves as Romans. So Byzantines is more fitting.
Beautiful. It really does sound like an anime where the two main characters have to fight at the end, and one has to die for the world to move forward.
Constantine could set up an empire-in-exile in the Morea or somewhere else and carry on the war against the Ottomans. Constantine did not accept their ideas; he refused to be remembered as the emperor who ran away.[90] According to later chroniclers, Constantine's response to the idea of escaping was the following: God forbid that I should live as an Emperor without an Empire. As my city falls, I will fall with it. Whosoever wishes to escape, let him save himself if he can, and whoever is ready to face death, let him follow me.
I'm more sad that they had to go and call it Istanbul instead of keeping it as Constantinople. Like come on, Istanbul's a lame name. It's like going from Persia to Iran: a total downgrade and it doesn't sound as cool.

@@TheReturnOfGeorgePingas there has never been a "Byzantine empire". Western part of Rome fell to the barbarians, making East the only part of Rome to survive.
@@mortache Kind of. The Roman empire base and capital through the years was well, Rome. After Rome's fall there have been several cultural changes in the eastern empire plus many citizens and emperors claiming to be greek and not Roman. There have been many western Kings and scholars that made comments about the byzantines not being Romans but a kind of continuation of Ancient Greece legacy. For example the holy Roman empire was named like that because they wanted to continue Romes legacy and there was no other that really did that in their opinion. The only thing that the Byzantines had in common with Roman's in some parts was the structure of their society and how they operated in some things. They were more of a Greek/Roman hybrid at best and it's own thing(Byzantines) after Rome's fall.
@@weetbix4497 I’ll make it more “intelligble” “It’s a pain in the ass, isn’t it? Why is it still hurting? That was an easy win, there are no challenges for Turks.”
There are conflicting and varied sources on the Death of Constantine, But here’s my personal favorite retelling: Written accounts by some Turkic advisors to the Sultan claim they saw him strip from his imperial garbs and dress in a soldiers uniform as to not be distinguished from his men while fighting, Constantine Then vanished into the fray of battle. He died not only as the last Roman emperor, But he died alongside his men on equal level. Hence why Mehmed II could not distinguish the body of the emperor from the body of a common soldier.

Imagine painting a portrait of your Emperor only for your country to be ransacked by some invaders and then have people many centuries in the future generate videos of him singing a song in some strange language.
@Ninja Crackpot I recall the bombardment make a breach in wich the turks tried to enter, bizantines defenders push back in the breach and in the back of the attacking army because one defenders divison leave trough the gates, but sadly for the bizantines the attacking army rallies again and manage to reach the open gates at the same time the defenders tried to close it again. But don't believe me completely in this, let me research again that.
@Ninja Crackpot No, I didn't mean cannos open the gate, I say the cannon bombardment make a breach in one point of the walls, that and the defenders make a counter attack by sending part of the defenders, outside the city through the gates, against the attakers rear.
There is no more hardcore and heroic manner in which an Empire can end, than its last Emperor charging the enemy alongside his men, asured of death yet refusing to flee.
Constantine were given many opportunities to flee, but he had promised to defend the city with his life. The official story, that was even accepted by the turks at the time is that his last words were "The city has fallen and I am still alive". Then he ran towards the enemy and was eventually killed in battle. Basically, since he had failed to protect the city, he had no longer any reason or right to live. Even if the story of his death is only half-true, he was there and fought until his death. He's a great role model. Maybe he knew that he was protecting something special. The event lead to lots of refugees fleeing into Europe, in particular into Northern Italy, and sparked the renaissance, which was the first significant sign of progress in Europe in 1500 years.

He will never be forgotten, he was a cunning and intelligent ruler but unfortunately like his father Manuel II came too late, I believe if they were around much earlier the Empire could have potentially stayed alive for much longer.
@Lord Apollo I believe originally there were some Venicians who wnated money or something, and they were in the HRE (holy roman empire) at some point where they met a Byzantine prince who had been deposed, and he promised them 200,000 silver ducets and to make Byzantium Catholic if they made him emperor again so venicians take over constantinople (along with other catholic states) then the prince doesnt do his promises so they sacked constantinople and stole everything of value etc.
