03 July 2020 GSSA Lunchtime talk with Prof Stephen Prevec:
Constraining geochemical variation in mafic igneous rocks
Steve Prevec, Associate Professor Geochemistry and Petrology at Rhodes University, talks about "Constraining geochemical variation in mafic igneous rocks"; an overview of the manifestations and effects of processes including magma mixing, crustal contamination, differentiation /fractional crystallisation, post-cumulate igneous modification, and alteration.
Steve undertook his geological training in Canada, at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario (B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc.) and at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Ph.D.), specialising in the acquisition and application of radiogenic isotope data (Nd, Sr, Pb), along with geochemistry and petrology, to the study of the origins and evolution of various Proterozoic mafic intrusions.
After setting up/maintaining/working in isotope labs in Ottawa, Montreal and Sudbury, whilst completing his Ph.D., he moved to the University of the Witwatersrand where he spent six years in the isotope facility at what was the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysical Research. He has been a member of academic staff in Geology at Rhodes University since 2004, where he teaches and conducts research in high-temperature magmatic processes, mainly to do with layered mafic intrusions and impact melts.
