I’ve worked both and this is the truth. I swear people in those shops don’t know how to use a forklift to save their life, and dealing with customers is exactly like that.
I have customers ask me to look extensive amounts of information up online for them all the time. Like I’m a physical search engine they can dictate their query to.
I love how he be setting up the store to get robbed of power tools and does side deals all day long. But someone come up to buy a tool to return when they are done. That there is a "PROBLEM".
That's why Home Depot rents tools now. For the people who genuinely only want the tool one time in their life, but don't want to feel like a scammer by returning an almost brand new tool. A good Home Depot employee can explain that to the return scammer. Not this guy.
As a long time forklift operator and forklift supervisor, I can absolutely say I have seen employees at places like that doing some very sketchy things with lifts. Getting electrical tape while watching plywood go up to the top rack with a reach extended out, 10 feet away from the rack, with the forks tilted down. *Cringes in forklift*

As someone who worked at Lowes, I can confirm, we don't know how to drive forklifts. They train us by telling us once what all the controls do and then reading a computer book on how to not kill customers.

If you are running bunks of plywood up with a narrow isle reach lift there is something wrong with your head. 16' PT you don't pick up more than two bunks at a time to bring in, and you don't lift more than one bunk at a time to put up in the cantilever top stock spaces.
I worked at one of these places. We had about 1 real forklift driver. Now I see him at my current employer as a forklift driver. We drove the forks into the product daily. Everyone at my current employer was surprised and said they'd never heard of it before when a new guy drove the forks into the product instead of where he was supposed to. I was like, what do you mean y'all don't see this everyday?
Don't ya love the guy that buys 3 sheets of plywood, asks if we could cut it down for him, then whips out a cut list and you end up with 40 pieces of wood.
Man, I get my lunch from gas stations often. I did not realize this was gonna hit home when I was watching it. I dig a lot of holes in my job..but I just tell people iam a agricultural engineer to make me feel better..lol
I got a roommate who works at the hospital 10 streets away from my house, same main street. I go there a few days a week using his discount for our lunches and dinners

I lie about my job every time someone asks me I’m a PhD mathematician and I don’t want to have some huge conversation so I just say I have a 9-5 to guarantee no follow up questions. Ain’t no shame in lying about your job.
As a construction worker (electrician) who just got a job at lowes this is so relatable. I often catch myself straying over to tools and hardware to just drool over the channel locks lol.
I just took a job here in the plumbing department, even though Iv been a painter for 10 years (my body’s screwed). I told them I don’t know shit about plumbing, they’re so desperate for employees they don’t even care.
This reminded me of the Home depot experience. I told a manager from another store to read the words in the bag to help out a customer because I am busy doing a one man show. She wanted me fired, because i was being rude. Made the little reported write up thing. I read it answered it was a crock of shit and declined the write up and carried on till i quit.
Sounds like my Home Depot. Some really skilled and amazing people there, but for some reason they nothing about their area. 20 years of experience in construction, they put him in the Garden section.
I never worked construction but I did four years at Home Depot and I actually learned a ton about tools and how to use them. Infinitely better at fixing things around the house now.

Funny thing is they will just pass the shoplifting losses on to their customers so they can keep upping their shareholder dividends. The working stiff still gets screwed.
They started locking the door on night shift so we couldn’t smoke so we started smoking inside that shit lasted about two days and viola the doors weren’t locked anymore
I am very happy that I do not work with customers nor do I work in retail. I have only worked in industrial trades since I turned 19 because they way we speak to each other each day shocks random people who do not work in industrial settings. We insult each other even when we are giving them praise for a job well done, which is normal.
My time at HD would’ve been SO much better had we had someone like that working there. The closest we had was this older guy who basically had no filter. He was fun to work with.
last time i went to home depot, i asked the employee where they had painters tape. They told me they don't think they sell that kind of tape. Walked away shaking my head and looked it on the website and located it 2 rows over.
I don’t hate them, but I do…pity(?) them and I see them as lower-end blue collar. Less professional. Creatures of lust, greed, and drunkenness. I’m blue collar too, but my gig is manufacturing. Not construction. I like my philosophy and my theology and my deep intangible thinking. I like my morals and I’m infinitely more likely to spend my alone time on a weekend reading a good book or playing games than getting drunk.
as a home depot associate, it is really fucking annoying that customers think that we know everything about everything in the store. also when you come to the store looking for something that the home depot app says we only have 2 left of, and we check our overhead management and overstock shelves (intermediates or the shelves out of your reach and palets) and we cannot find it, just accept the fact that we dont have it. next time call ahead and see if we can find it so you dont waste your time.
Returning tools for warranty after using them. I had a coworker who worked at a car dealership and people would test drive a truck and use it for moving their house. belongings. Scratch it all up. Yes it happens.

I’m do a lot of deliveries for Home Depot…. I somehow thought this would be a perfect job for construction workers or those getting out of the trade…. I’m a 1099 worker so now that I think about it? I’ll never go back to answering ppl…. But they’re not like this at our stores other then the teenagers , we have a lot of knowledgeable older ppl & older ladies who know their lawn & garden lbs
I have terrible legal habits but I’m the first to volunteer for for the hard , dirty, and dangerous work most of my coworkers run from. They tolerate me because without me they’ll have it much worse. 😊.
As someone who has been working at home depot for over 7 years and gets paid less than new hires, if you have other options......run far away. Started my own small business about a year and a half ago. As soon as I can, I'm out of there.
