Wow is that a 30 amp cutout fuse and a consumer unit that has only one screw holding the cover on.
The 3 common sizes of cutout fuse in a domestic dwelling are 100 amps , 80 amps and 60 amps but if you have come across a 30 amp one please drop a comment.
Not only has the consumer unit (fuse box) got only one screw holding the front cover on it, it is impossible to open the cover fully to access the MCB's and RCD's.

My last house had a 30A cutout with a 40A credit meter and the previous owner had fitted an 11Kw shower. Had to call the DNO out when the bitumen in the lead supply cable boiled out and the cloth covered conductors started arcing. The fella DNO sent out spotted that a separate supply tapped off of the Henley, pre meter and fed an old ceramic mem fuse carrier that had previously fed the shed (via T&E in a hosepipe) which we had pulled down. The DNO also noted that the house had no earth to speak of. Took months to sort out between supplier and DNO. For bonus points, the supply was looped in from neighbours. Theirs was as equally bad.

Did they upgrade the supply?

@@johnburns4017sort of, ran a new feed, left meter (not my job), but fitted 100A fuse in cutout. No isolation.

oh man thats the kind of situation where you just want to start form zero and rip everything out starting at the feed cable

My parents live in one of 60 mobile homes with a main 30a supply, all on a TT earthing system. It’s obviously more to do with the land owner not investing but happy to add new homes without the shame.

The wood is a safety feature, it stops children from opening it and messing around with it. Don't you ever think about the children, won't anyone think about the children?!

The old housing stock were not built for modern day living. I remember reading , they forecast that no house would require more than a 60smp supply. . With this government going all out for clean energy house are going to need more 100amp. It wouldn't surprise me in the near future 3 phase supplies being installed in house as a norm.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 3 года назад
You can get 150A single phase I believe. More than enough for a modern home - even with Heat Pumps, etc. The secret is battery storage like a Tesla Powerwall. Charge the battery, then use the stored energy for high usage times.

On the continent it is actually the norm to have three-phase in domestic dwellings. In Germany the standard for new installations is 3x63A, in old installations from the 1960s it is 3x35A.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 3 года назад
@@Marcel_Germann Three phase is totally unnecessary in new homes these days, as they are so well insulated. Also appliances are becoming more efficient. Bosch make an induction hob that runs off a 13A plug.
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 3 года назад
@@johnburns4017 Tell that to the people that want an EV charger. Actually I can use a 5x2.5mm² cable for 11kW, even 5x1.5mm² would be sufficient for that! Which conductor size do you need for a single phase circuit designed for the same demand? And I would never use a plug for such an appliance, the plugs in the UK are rated for 13A and the Schuko we use here for 16A. But that's only for a short-time, maximum of one hour! Then the plug and the outlet will burn out. Permanent rating is 10A for both, BS 1363 and Schuko. I would always hardwire such appliances.

@@Marcel_Germann Amen. They would use 10 or 16 mm cable depending on reference method.

Possibly the end of a looped supply from another property?

Be interested in seeing the maximum demand calculation given the main intake. Also I wouldn't describe that as maintainable given the access.

@@GSHElectrical hope so. Does that sticker state it was inspected in April 2021? And retest in 5 years..... I know I wouldn't put five years on an installation like that. 🙈

Reminds me of when our neighbours called me round to check the wiring in their house... it had previously been 3 flats. They found the power was out in one of the previous flats. It'd been fine till they ran the dryer in that room. I showed them the coin meter under the sink (yes really) and showed them how to shove the same 50p thru it again and again. (privately owned, no theft going on). Eventually they had me remove it entirely

Metal original service head below the replacement fuseholder too by the look of it, possibly originally DP fused? Round here (SSE) that's an immediate upgrade but may well be put on hold because of the C word

A 30 Amp cutout fuse (or 35 for that matter) was the default for many domestic installations until recent years over here in Netherlands... Nothing wrong with that ;)
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 3 года назад
Single phase? Afaik in the Netherlands three-phase in domestic dwellings is common. In a three-phase system 35A are ~24kW. Single phase 35A are only ~8kW. Especially when you have kitchen cooker that draws a lot of current.
