Do It Yourself Gardening | Container Gardening with Japanese Maples | How to Grow Japanese Maples in Containers
Matt and Tim discuss How to Grow Japanese Maples in Containers in this DIY Gardening Podcast. Learn how to plant your own container garden with Japanese maples. From selecting the right pot - to picking the best Japanese maple varieties for container growing, Matt and Tim discuss it all including Tips for Growing Japanese Maples in Containers.
Japanese maples have a non-invasive root system that makes them ideal for container growing and bonsai culture. This will allow you to bring the ornamental appeal of Japanese maple to your deck, patio, poolside and driveway expanding your garden. The concept of how big a Japanese maple will get in a container is similar to that of how big a goldfish will get inside a bowl. A Japanese maple will grow the size container it is put in. A small container will dwarf the size of the tree from the size the tree would naturally be in the landscape. Dwarf Japanese maples are often used in containers because they get fairly close to full-size in most containers. The best tip for container growing is a well-drained pot.

I get the big nice looking pot I want and then I put a smaller pot in it so slowly size up over the years. This way I can have the look of a large pot while only using a smaller one. The key is to ensure that you have nothing blocking the drainage from your internal pot into the larger pot so water does not get trapped anywhere.

In bonsai we use Pumice as draniage because it dosn´t break down, like Akadama. Also Pumice is great in the soil mix, for more oxygen in the soil.

I have 4 so far. This season they stay in the purchase pot. I drilled 4 holes in the decorative plastic container. That sits on wheels that have a big drainage hole.

This is great…We need this. I’m new at this In the past 2 months I’ve purchased 12 Japanese maples and are all “my favorite ones” LOL. I have moved them into small terracotta pots similar in size to the nursery pots. My ground it’s frozen right now. Some I will plant in the ground and others will stay in pots. I hope you give us info on how to take care of them when exposed to bad weather conditions.

The gravel in a pot debate is a definitely a long standing debate. I’ve heard several arguments against gravel and I believe the issue may be that the potting mix can be too fine and wash into the gravel negating the voids provided be the gravel. A high quality landscape fabric between helps, you still can have water retaining mix and a drainage layer. Another problem I’ve found is the gravel size and shape, the key is void space between the gravels.

In containers I use old window screen to block drain holes. I do put a layer of gravel I first, then cover it with window screen before I add dirt. This way dirt doesn’t mix with gravel. I use lots of composted pine bark in my dirt mix. VIOLA’…..Excellent drainage. Thank you Gentlemen ❤

Really looking forward to this!! I’m looking to expand my JM collection to the patio, and I’m kind of going back and forth in my mind between bonsai vs container - I’m sure I can try both 😊, but would appreciate your insight and recommendations. Zone 7A northern virginia.

When planting companion plants, do I need to make sure to keep some space around the base of the trunk (like if adding mulch) or is it ok to let them grow up against the trunk?

Hi, Thank you for your content!! I have just purchased a Bloodgood Japanse Maple. I have had two trees die in the spot I want my tree in. The prior trees were Japanese maple bare root and Eastern redbud bare root, They didn't come back after the winter, zone 5b. It's soggy clay in that area too. I was going to try to amend my soil but I noticed that spot is in a trough and it must get the runoff rain. My new tree in 4-5 ft tall. I'm now thinking container. You say put bricks under it and keep it out of the water level. Do I partially bury the pot? My concern is that we often have high winds and it might blow over if it's in a container. I don't want it to die I need the color so bad in my yard. Please explain the exact way I would container this plant. Thanks

I would create an air pocket either bricks for drainage but not bury the bottom of the pot

hello. First, what those who buy a maple should know is the following, because depending on what they want to do with it, it will depend on where it should be transplanted. For example, the ones I buy are all to turn them into bonsai, when a young plant arrives, The first few years I plant them in a greengrocer, they have many holes, the roots will never be flooded and they will be well ventilated so that they grow lighter, the roots grow and reach the holes and when they notice that they have light, they stop growing and branch out behind With this I get that in a short time, the root ball is much bigger, with which the plant will grow more lightly, of course always being at the top of it so that it doesn't grow us blah but where I want it to grow, it will need a good subscriber with intensive arganic fertilizer, and in around 3 or 4 years we can have a maple (funny bonsai) in fact I have some that have been with me for 20 years, but as you say using bonsai techniques, which is completely different You will plant them in a plastic pot and let them grow to their ball that's why the gentleman buy a maple. The first thing you have to be sure of is why you want it, whether to plant it in the open field, in pots, or for bonsai, each one will need a different treatment. I am 60 years old and I have been growing maples for bonsai since I was 15 I don't like them on open land unless they are well cared for, and I have seen the visits that you have made and the maples are badly pruned, (you can see branches of 2.3 or 4 meters and only leaves at the tips, that is because they have not yet been careful enough, if at the time they had been pruned they would be 5 times more beautiful than they are Sorry for the billet, but talking about maples makes me go crazy hehehehe regards
