It’s hot as blue blazes, but garden insect pests don’t care. Fortunately, neither do a lot of heat-loving herbs. Stroll through the potager with me to talk garden pest control for bagworms, sow bugs, and mites. We’ll also take a look at my new container herb garden.

Hey Linda ..watching your channel is bittersweet right now.. You make me so happy and I am thinking i want to go buy that and that. Then I remember i cant. I am afraid to leave my home our numbers are rising and rising and not recommended to go out now. I just have to trust in Gods plan. I will be here tomorrow. Thank you.🙏❤

Good morning, Linda! Thank you so much for the Captain Jack’s reference! I had used it in the past, but had forgotten about it for some reason...just old brain I guess! 🤣🤣 Anyway, i just seeded zinnias and cosmos again, so I will definitely get some now to protect them. The pests have been awful here in south Louisiana this year. The heat and humidity (expecting a 108 heat index today 🥵) keep me from spending as much time as I need to on these tasks. So thanks again and wish you a beautiful day! 💚🌿🌸🌳

Ohhh, and the Japanese beetles. 😖 They love my Vitex which is in full bloom. You’re right, the pests are flourishing in the heat and humidity, but the bees and butterflies make it all worthwhile. ☺️☺️.

I am south of you in the DFW area. Bag worms are a HUGE problem in my garden. I don't spray. So they got my big Italian cypress, leyland cypress and junipers. I still have one 50ft Arizona cypress that is OK. I used to pick them off my plants but once the trees get too tall then I can't help them, so I end up cutting them down. Last year I picked several buckets off everything. They were on all my fruit trees: persimmon trees, nanking cherries, button bush, pomegranates and apricot tree. I read that they overwinter in their bags so I was hunting them all winter. So far this year it is much better, but I am always looking for them and am still finding them.

I grow lavender in pots and inground. I had NO luck with it for years until I began using a rock mulch. I've found a rock mulch, bright hot sun, well draining soil with sand added in and little watering is the trick in our humid, zone 7 garden. Also certain varieties do better for me than others. I find Gross, Phenomenal and Anouk do best in Central Va.

Linda, how do you weather over all your plants especially the ones in containers? OK can have some pretty cold days. Your yard is just gorgeous! Noticed on this video that many plants are in pots. I have clay soil which stops me from planting certain plants. Experienced a lot of loss. But containers the way you have them mixed throughout is really nice. Beautiful!!!

Is a bag worm what we in New Zealand would call a case moth - a caterpillar that lives in a long triangular cocoon that comes out to feed?

Good morning:) I wanted to ask does one need to worry about pests when you have plants that are very close together? If your plants are further apart would one not assume that you would be ok? Sorry, I'm a beginner gardener:). Thank you!
@LindaVater
@LindaVater 4 года назад
More space helps with both insects and disease but is not a guarantee. Keen observation is important. Welcome to gardening!

If the garden dust targets among other things caterpillars, Won’t that eliminate your butterflies?

Hi Linda. I live in the New Orleans area and for the last couple of years I have been growing guara in my front foundation bed in front of a stand of nandina. The guara looks airy and fresh in the early spring but not far into the growing season, it gets tall and tends to flop over the garden's edge, taking a nosedive into the grass. Besides looking messy, the airy effect of the guara is completely lost. I cut the guara back about three weeks ago but it is well on its way to a repeat performance - grow, flop, cut. I would like to stake the guara so that I can continue to enjoy it without having to cut it back. Can you recommend a style of staking that would look good in a formally landscaped front bed? I am enjoying your RU-vid videos immensely! Thank you.

Check these out! I have them and think they are so understated and good looking. I used them on my larkspur this spring that got tall and floppy! www.gardeners.com/buy/jardin-half-round-flower-supports/8609741.html
