Container Rollover Lands on Fire Hydrant and Concrete Poles. Finally, a worthy challenge for myself and Alex! This call originally came in as a standard container lift. Joe was dispatched in our 50ton wrecker, but when he got on scene he saw it was a full on rollover! Not any regular rollover either; the owner said it landed on top of a fire hydrant. My dad went in his rotator to assist, but wanted two rotators on this job since it needed extra care and finesse.
Alex and I responded with Hulk and Big Flipper and both had the idea to do a mid air roll aka barrel roll. Realistically, it was the only option on this job for a few reasons. First and most obvious is to prevent the container wall from ripping open. Just pulling the container up and over while planted would have taken out the wall and spilled all the load in the middle. Second is to protect the fire hydrant. They are strong but there's no telling how much damage it would cause to flip the container while the wall is caught on the hydrant.
Our Bailey's Platinum slings made the job not only safe, but as you can see from the video they hugged the container edge and took virtually no damage even without strap protectors. These have become my new favorite rigging and will use them on many more jobs to come.
By now this is also my second mid air roll job in a month that I've posted and really hope you guys like this maneuver. It's a bit more advanced than a regular upright, but works flawlessly when rigged right and done in unison with both operators. Let me know what you guys think of this barrel roll!
