This video shows how to operate the main engine (94rpm max) of a container ship from the emergency manoeuvring station (engine side control console).
The engine is started using compressed air which pushes the pistons down in sequence to bring the speed up before fuel is injected.
In this video the large hand wheel is used to regulate the rack and slide operation of all of the engine's fuel pumps which control the amount of fuel entering the cylinders and so, the speed of the engine.
Main Engine Man B&W 12K98MC
- 12 Straight cylinders in-line
- 980mm Bore
- 2660mm Stroke
- 68640 kW (92048 hp) @ 94 rpm
8478 teu, 91038 Gross tonnage, 334 Metre long Container ship.

My container ship is stick shift. The clutch is powered by compressed air. It goes 0 to 10 knots a few seconds quicker than the automatic.

After 45 years at sea no they are not pushing random buttons, its the engine side controls for when the computers go tits up .The view is not the crankcase but the camshaft with the fuel and exhaust valve cams. The alarms are being answered in the control room.
@ericwsmith7722
@ericwsmith7722 8 лет назад
+theold49er ---- I am just guessing, but they were starting, stopping the engine, and reversing direction, That is how the ship changes direction, by running the engine backwards ? (smaller ships have gear boxes I would assume ) . And the last thing they did with the black knobs was restore control to the bridge deck ? And yes I did notice they were cam lobes and not connecting rods. But I would thing with valves that big they would be almost like connecting rods, instead of spring and lift type like on smaller engines.
@thephantom1492
@thephantom1492 8 лет назад
+eric wsmith The engine is directly connected to the propeller, with no gearbox of any kind. To go in reverse, they start the engine in reverse, hence why the RPM gauge goes from "black 100" to 0 to "red 100", for forward and reverse.
@Svilchooo
@Svilchooo 7 лет назад
Engine revers is necessary when the ship has FPP. When the vessel is with CPP engine revers is not needed.

B & W Main Engine. They are operating on the emergency control stand as a routine test to check it's effectiveness as required by the company's SMS. This method is only used during emergencies like if the Bridge or ECC control fails to operate M/E start/stop, ahead/astern. Marine engineers like me know what I'm talking about.

I don't understand why so many dislikes, we, thanks to technology and platforms and most importantly to people like these we are freely, able to learn how most things works yet someone demands perfection , when they themselves don't even know what " perfection " means...
@robertleifeld225
@robertleifeld225 7 лет назад
I can answer why so many dislikes... I know nothing about boats and their engines but I like machinery in general so I was watching this. Camera was zoomed in too much and kept jumping from one place to another and back, no one told us non-pro people what we were seeing or what the controls do. A lot of watchers would just give up and put a thumbs down and go watch something else. About half way through I started skipping parts of the video just to end it but I did not give either a thumbs up or down; I did read through the comments and it is obvious that many people knew exactly what they were doing and I am sure they really enjoyed the video, Good for them. At 4:58, the engineer receives at dead slow ahead command and by mistake, forgets to reverse the cams and starts the engine astern. Big mistake that triggers a WRONG WAY alarm at 5:25. Corrected at 5:57, that is enough time to hit a dock and damage the ship. Lack of concentration, most likely due to the presence of a camera.

@salemcripple

this is the manual control station, on a big container ship, the only way to reverse the prop to slow down (or go backwards) is to reverse the entire engine. they switched the cams, pumps, and injectors around so the whole engine spins backwards (you can see this when the lights go from green to red, for "aft"). my guess is they're probably docking, which would explain all the forward and after movements.
@therealchayd
@therealchayd 7 лет назад
That's a good explanation, it makes sense now. I guess the bridge were sending orders down to the engine room and these guys were controlling the mechanical side of things. Having experience with small engines I found it hard to get my head round the fact that big boats don't have a clutch or gears and you have to stop the engine and reverse it if you need to change direction!
@blackbird8632
@blackbird8632 6 лет назад
ChayD basically, the engine is so massive a clutch and gearbox would need to be so large it becomes impractical.
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 3 года назад
This is the manual engine control station for use in emergencies, it's being tested here. The lights on the upper panel are the signal from the bridge telling them what speed to run the engine. On the control station, the black and red buttons stop and start the engine and the wheel controls fuel flow. The switch they move at 2:35 sets forward/reverse. They do 3 tests: Starting the engine forward, starting it in reverse, and starting it in the wrong direction in order to test the wrong direction alarm. After all three tests are complete, they disable the manual control station and return control to the bridge.

@joshuacornell6667
@joshuacornell6667 8 лет назад
Not that much different from that of steam engines the days of steam power. Since there is a delay in the signal and change of engine ops since the ship is so large that what you are seeing is just part of the picture from inside, ships do not move faster than 10 mph or 13 nm/h when docking which what was going on.

In a documentary, I saw them refurbish a cylinder while underway. I presume there is a way to disengage the piston rod from the connecting rod? Do you have to stop the engine to disconnect it?
@bullettoothtony2007
@bullettoothtony2007 8 лет назад
+researcher4good The piston rod and connecting rod are held together with hydraulically stretched bolts which require a hydraulic jack to remove. It would not be possible to disconnect while the engine was turning, but can be removed whilst the ship is in port. The ship can easily function with one piston removed which would allow the crew to perform any maintenance on that single unit.
@researcher4good
@researcher4good 8 лет назад

The digital buttons are the ship's telegraph and correspond to commands sent from the bridge (you know, in old films when you see the captain turn a massive lever to "Ahead Full" and a bell goes *ding*ding*, but done with buttons). The engineers then act on these and set the engine to ahead or astern and set the appropriate speed with that crank wheel, finally giving the engine a blast of compressed air to start it. Thing is that engines this size don't have a clutch or gearbox, so you have to stop the engine, then start it in reverse if you want to go backwards!

I take it the compressor is on the ship, you don't want to have to rely on a shore-side supply which would require serious hosing to be able to connect to your ship over such a distance. You also want to be able to start the ship after you've suffered technical problems out at sea that for whatever reason had you stall the engine. As for the pressure: I unfortunately do not know.

I am sort of puzzled. I am assuming you tried intentionally to start in astern mode. If not why was it 'wanting' to run asern instead of ahead? I can figure out basic proceedure of starting from this clip though on instrument panel some lights or buttons were out of focus and I could not read them. The two blue levers on top left (One you locked) I am curious of purpose of these particular two blue levers. (I used to have textbook on marine diesel as bought at local maritime school). Sorry I gave it up! So I know proceedure of air starting. Is this MAN/BMW engine? I was aboard training ship today Kaiwo Maru from NIST (National Institute of Sea Training ( near Yokohama, Japan.
@bullettoothtony2007
@bullettoothtony2007 10 лет назад
Yes, this is a MAN B&W engine. When the bridge request to go 'dead slow ahead' that is the green light that shows and then we have to acknowledge this request by pressing the button. However, when we started the engine, we had not switched the fuel cams back to ahead mode after running her in astern, this is done by one of the two small blue levers. The other blue lever switches between normal running and emergency running. As this is emergency running, none of the controls in the engine control room or the bridge will be able to run the engine, they can only send requests to the emergency station seen in the video.
