That original red wire to the outlet was correct, but the outlet itself still had the jumper tab intact (ties the top and bottom hot side together) Which meant that the compressor was getting a constant 120v from the "Vaporizer" side, which I am willing to bet is supposed to be constantly hot. I also see that the old defrost timer had caught fire as well. And the rest of the wiring in that thing is a deathtrap...time to rework it or retire it.
Agreed, the tab wasn't cut and regular outlets usually have that tab. EDIT: Just have to be careful with the neutral side. Sometimes you cut the hot and share a neutral, sometimes both are cut with a separate neutral. Obviously, just cut what was cut on the original when replacing.

Yea I didn’t film to completion. Ended up running that thing thru 3 defrosts to clear the interior while I went and did the roof work scheduled. Thanks for looking out for me 😊👍🏼
