Tifosi Aethon Sunglasses (1yr Review)
• Tifosi Aethon (1yr Own...
So after doing some searching online and via YT, I didn't really find any updated vids on what it's like owning these Conti Classic Tires, so I figured let's do this video!
There are definitely some Pro's and Con's to it.
Cons:
- Requires high pressure (95psi is the lowest, but of course, you can maybe get away with it being lower if you weigh less).
- The Black Chili Compound at high air pressure affects grip (not immensely, but you can feel the tire slightly skid at high speed, especially cornering).
- The PolyXBreaker liner is not what its cut out to be (it's OKAY). It does help a bit, but the rear tire will see a lot of cuts/flats if you are a bit on the heavier side of things (I'm currently running my old Gatorskin on the rear because the rear one was cut pretty badly).
- There is only one size option: 25mm (not a super bad thing, but a 28mm would probably offer a more supple and nicer ride and lower pressures perhaps).
-The sidewalls flex quite a bit (more than I personally would like for a tire with such high air pressure).
Pros:
- Inexpensive Tires that do the job! ($66 is what I paid for them).
NOTE: The prices unfortunately have gone up on Amazon! By like $15 since I bought them! But don't worry, I found them on eBay too!
www.amazon.com/Continental-Gr...
www.ebay.com/itm/Continental-...
- Although the Black Chili Compound skids a bit at high air pressure (no choice) and fast cornering, it still holds you down. So it still works well for the price. Just be careful with wet surfaces!!!! Super dangerous! lol
- Aesthetics (this tire does look sweet, this is a no brainer, lol)
- Wear Indicators (super helpful to know when it's time to switch them out).
- Clincher/Folding Bead (a round wire tire isn't bad, but a folding bead clincher is a bit lighter for sure, and it's easier to mount onto your tire right off the bat, and for switching out flats or remounting your tire on a new wheel, this is just a better option really).
Conclussion:
Although some of the Cons aren't good, the tire overall is still a good choice for someone on a budget or wants a cheap tire that can be used as a fast trainer or a race tire (when you aren't balling out of control), or if you want to be a fast commuter and got a couple bucks left over, then I say the Pros still outweigh the Cons here.
Unfortunately for me the rear tire didn't work out well, but I was heavier when the tire gave out (I have since replaced it with the same, lol). So far so good this time since I've lost a couple pounds, I've had a lot less issues (originally closer to like 195, now I'm 183).
In the end, it's not going to get you a CRAP TON of miles, but each person might have a different experience in regards to mileage out of these. Like I mentioned in the video, I still have the front one, and still rolling on it! 240 grams on each tire (roughly), so maybe for some weight weenies that could be an issue, but it's only 1lb for some decent tires that do well, so I see no downside (if you use latex inner tubes, perhaps they'll roll faster and overall just weigh less? Food for thought, lol).
So I hope this information helps some people out!

Back in the day, I ran these in 700x23 at 100 psi. No one except touring cyclists ran wider than 700x23. This review seems like it's written by someone used to tubeless tires and lower tire pressures. I found these to be the most durable of all the tires I tried. I don't ride as many miles as I used to but I've had a set of these on a bike for a number of years and never had a flat.

Lol, I wish I could afford a tubeless tire/wheel setup. Never have I ever owned one. I’m just speaking from personal experience. Mind you, I live in an area where glass is the most common thing that I find in my tires that end my rides with punctures. If you live in an area that doesn’t give you said problem, dude, you got it good. I love the Grand Prix tires. Even more than the US3’s I’ve been running, but they’re a bit out of budget at the moment. And 23’s aren’t bad at all, but I prefer the wider 25-28’s just for the extra comfort those extra mm’s give. When I was riding 23’s at the beginning of me getting into the sport, I would max out my tires at 110-120psi, and it was ROUGH. 100psi with a 25-28 is a bit better, but I know better now and only add what I actually need which is 77-81 on training/casual riding, and 80-88 when carrying a big backpack and assuming I haven’t gained weight, lol.

I’ve been deciding between these and the GP 4 seasons. The 4 seasons is probably the better commuter? Great, thorough vid!
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 4 года назад
GP 4 Season are some nice tires from my understanding! The Classics can move quickly, but puncture resistance isn't great. I'd definitely say the GP 4 Season is superior, but with a slightly bigger price tag (but also added weight). bicyclerollingresistance.com has a lot of good information on which tires have good rolling resistance as well as puncture resistance and more. I'd say to definitely check the site out!

From Conti site GP4S seem to have compound optimized for colder temperatures, not sure how they roll and grip at warm temps. If you don't cycle much at cold weather then GP or GP GT would be better all-around tires. This are models Im considering. Classic is very nice but then with black saddle and grips I'd feel urge to add more brown accents so Im just sticking with black tires.

Gators all day I ride to work on the river bed , park pretty much I just open my door and just go and let me just say I run over glass , Little Rock’s , and my gators have never let me down I run them both at 💯 psi I weigh about 165lbs I’ll never switch to any other tire these things are solid I don’t want to be sitting on the side of the road changing fricken flats not fun anywho be safe.
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 3 года назад
I have Gatorskins myself, but I'll say this. I will never fully trust them in wet areas. Dry ground, works great! I've had flats on them for sure. Of course, they were thorns that the tire wasn't going to stop and I've gone through one blowout due to a sharp rock slashing a small hole in the rear (it did hold up for about a month, and eventually gave out). I'd still say Gatorskin or Duraskin are great daily riders (just don't give it all your trust in or around water, lol).

Same exact thing happened on my 5000s II after about 800mi. Switched to the Gators and never looked back
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 2 года назад
Yeah unfortunately the carcass on these are extremely susceptible to small slashes and punctures. But that’s the price that is paid for speed/comfort. Gatorskins and Lugano II are great for commuting/training/general daily riding! If I had to choose between both I know I’ll go for the Luganos! GatorSkins just drag a bit too much for me, lol.

@@railthegutter -- Really? Hmm. Wonder if it's their compound as I do note to people they have exceptional grip from my experience, but that certainly would reduce your roll, I only swear by them as I know many people aside from myself who ride the til' replacement without ever having a single flat: Last two sets have been exactly that
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 2 года назад
Gators and Luganos have a similar puncture resistance, but the Lugano just rolls slightly nicer and it could very well be because of the compound being different. Both have a good amount of grip in dry conditions, but in wet conditions, oh man, lol. Sketchy moments that have required cat like reflexes to keep myself upright due to full grip loss, lol.

Hi, noticed you refer to Sheldon Brown on TPI. He also explains why manufacturer'd pressure figures are not be trusted blindly and have to be adjusted depending on weight and road conditions. From catalogue pictures Classic seems to have thinner tread than, say plain GP (not Classic, not numbered race versions) - though in 25c version weight is same, 225/230gr so pictures could be misleading. If sidewalls on Classic would be lighter then tread would be thicker with same weight which doesn't seem to be case. I feel sorry for your bad luck with rear tire (and kind of doubt my oncoming purchase....)
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 3 года назад
I agree on the adjustment of air pressure for YOUR weight/road conditions. That’s 100% true. To this day it’s a balancing act that never ends. On these specific tires, the tread is mainly in the middle. There is almost no tread on the sidewalls. I’m still using one tire to this day and have summed up about 3000 miles on the front alone (rear has been kept off the bike for now due to the cuts that I just don’t trust which may have been just my fault since I live in a city, lol). Honestly, if you’ve purchased them, I don’t think you’ll be too dissatisfied with them. If you run the correct front/rear pressure for you, then you should get a decent amount of miles out of them. Just an FYI: I weigh 184lbs (83kg), I personally run my tires at 85-88F/98-100R. (Lower pressures when racing for added grip, 80-83F/93-95R. Thank you for the comment/information and watching! Still learning as I go! 🤘🏻

Thanks for update, now I realize Ive run mines at too high pressure (which ended with neck pain). Initially I were worried running tires at lower pressure than specified, not anymore.
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 3 года назад
Yeah. I realized I had more neck pain when the front tire was stiffer. Lowering the pressure in both tires to where I got the road buzz/bumps to be a lot more subtle made the bike a lot more comfortable, but also making sure the sidewalls don’t flex too much (pinch flats). comfort/grip = fast/fun/safe lol. In the end, experimenting is what works best.

Ok so it’s not just me. I felt like I was slipping and sliding everywhere when I was riding with these tires in the wet.
@railthegutter
@railthegutter 2 года назад
Yep. These tires are not great for the wet at all. My lower end Conti UltraSport 3’s actually hold a bit better in the wet surprisingly. And they aren’t Black Chili compound.

Grip in the wet is so bad. They are also slow
@railthegutter
@railthegutter Год назад
I honestly can’t really say much about the grip in the wet since here in CA some of us don’t ride outside when it’s even drizzling a tiny bit, lol. Slow? Mmmm, I would say they are slightly faster than the Conti US3’s, but that’s just my opinion. I do use mine with latex tubes, and that alone made both sets of tires “faster” due to slightly lower RR.
@stibra101
@stibra101 Год назад
@@railthegutter I tried them with latex tubes, also feeling slow. So much better tires available
@railthegutter
@railthegutter Год назад
I will agree. There are much much better options out there, but when you're on a budget, you just go with what you can you know. I will take the Grand Prix/US3's over Gatorskins or Durano's for speed, lol. www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/ has really good info, and it's what I use to get an idea on what to use/look for in a tire.
