Fiberific Ep#54 Continental Knitting, The knitting style for crocheters! I know that is a big call to make, and not the case for everybody, but I have found that when I am teaching knitting to crocheters, those that give the continental knitting method a go, tend to have the best success rate. It's because, the left and right hands are doing similar jobs as they do with crochet. In this knitting tutorial I show how to both knit and purl continental. But I will say, that there are even more variations than what i show here. So if you would like to learn how to pick your stitches in knitting, then give this a try, grab you needles, and some yarn and get comfy.

I crocheted for 20 years before I learned to knit the English method. Recently, for unknown reasons, I got the itch to learn Continental knitting. Were it not for failing miserably at achieving an even tension, I would be in love with the Continental style. I’m so tempted to give up and go back to English style except I hate to admit defeat. 😩

I found I have to drop down one or two needle sizes as it definitely made my knitting a bit looser

I'm sharing this just in case it helps someone else. I have to agree, I encourage you all to find a knitting style that suits you. I was taught throw knit and was happy with that, but became courius about continental knitting, gave it a go and didn't like it. I think it's because when I crochet I don't have my yarn finger sticking up like you have in this video, instead I have the yarn flat on my index finger and my index finger is low and is infact holding the crochet project that I'm working on. So I happened to be watching a RU-vid video of someone (Arne from Arne and Carlos) knitting and had a light bulb moment - short story, I love knit picking 😊

Yes! I always tell non-knitters who crochet to learn continental because the yarn tensioning can be done identical to the way the currently do in crochet. That being said, I've seen crocheters who throw their yarn like English knitters! 😱😱😱 Continental really comes into its own when you are ribbing - changing yarn front to back with a finger movement.
@Fiberific
@Fiberific 7 лет назад
Oh yes, I certainly find ribbing so much quicker for me!!!

Yours is the best video of Continental knitting that I have found! I have watched a number of them trying to figure out the purl stitch especially and was totally confused until I came to yours. Thank you So Very Much. This is clear and straightforward and has made my day. I am a crocheter for many years and this makes so much sense for those of us who want to keep that yarn in our left hand just like when crocheting. Thank you! Thank you!

I swear knitters seem to have birds chirping in the background. I've had birds since I moved out of my parents. First one I was 19. The one I have now I spoon fed and raised her from a month old baby with no feathers and fed her every two hours throughout the day for at least another whole month maybe longer it was long ago shes 33 yrs old. Turned 33 in February. She as both of my human children are all Aquarius'! My bird name is Billie she calls me mom. Do I hear birds? Are you a bird lover? Do you know are many knitters bird lovers I seem to hear them often in videos! Just very curious why I hear birds, maybe its in my head....lol I just transitioned to contintel from throwing. I crocheted for years. I also get a loser gage. Purling was hardest to keep tension with but it works now and it fine to do now and i'm so glad that I can show both ways. I think that is a good thing. I've tried combination knitting but don't like the decreases and increases as of yet. Stilll Exploring. But a definate contintel knitter, for me its eaier to remeber and to get between knits and purls, thats the entire reason I wanted to learn. That extra step was annoying putting yarn front to back takes much longer in English even for those that call themselves pickers but they still hold the working yarn in their right hand. Its strange, have you seen those knitters?

Hello. I just started to find my love for knitting and also started out as a crocheter. I had a hard time learning to knit being the only leftie in my family after many videos and sit downs with my grandma who does it so fast and second nature had a hard time slowing down. Thank you so much for the tip on going down a size too I didn't know that.

I taught my grand-daughter to crochet after I'd taught her to (Continental) knit. She had really struggled with the knitting, and found crochet much easier. But once she'd mastered it, she went back to Continental knitting and found it a pushover. She joined a knitting group at school, but couldn't talk the others into Continental, despite the fact that she was obviously knitting much faster than they were ;)

Thank you for posting how you continental knit. I am new to knitting after 50 years from originally learning how to throw knit. I've been an avid crocheter ever since my early teens. When I started up knitting again, it was faster for me to learn to throw since that's how I had originally learned. But I wanted to learn continental since I crochet so much. For whatever reason I have a tough time with that initial stitch at the beginning of each row but I'm confident it will get better with practice and time. Thank you again for sharing! I am sure I will be watching this video over and over until I get it right :-)

I'm just getting back into knitting and crochet after 30 years away, and since I leapt back in with a crochet project, I thought I'd give continental knitting a try. And it's just like being a new knitter all over again! It's going to take a lot of practice to marry technique and tension to the point where I can move on to an actual project and away from this training swatch I'm doing. I think maybe I have the on-needle tension too tight; I'll try to relax more when I have another go at the swatch tonight. Thanks for the video!

thanks for the tutorial. I had almost given up on knitting because I could never get my tension even, my stitches were all loose and messy. I'm a few rows in using this method and have tighter and neater stitches. It's much more comfortable to hold the yarn too. I'm so happy I just want to hug you and I'm not a hugger :)

I too am a crocheter first. Learned back in the 70's. I taught myself to knit from youtube about 5 years ago. I "assumed" that continental would be the way for me to knit because I am used to holding the working yarn in my left hand for crochet. Not so. Imagine my surprise. I could never get an even gauge with continental. I am an English knitter all the way. Every crocheter who wants to knit, should be allowed to develop their own technique and what is comfortable for them.

@@hanginwiththeharlows8954 There's a Russian lady with a Russian knitting fast and easy video on RU-vid it was interesting. She speaks English but regardless of that what she shows you is a little fast but I could mostly get it. She points out that the Russians do it from behind the needles. She seems very proud of being Russian and doing things the Russian way because it's easy and fast than any other way. Check it out, it was enlightening and I think as a crochet or I'm gonna try it. There's an English lady doing a net fasten easy the English way and she has something called a knitting belt and she mentions a knitting stick, her way looks pretty easy. I'm gonna try that one too. I also had a brilliant idea to knit with my long afghan hooks. Just til figure out where all the yarn is supposed to go to make stitches, so I don't drop any and miss the fact that they sneaked off in the middle of things to get married. It may be a bust but I can't be the 1st one to try it, can I?

I've seen a Russian lady talking on a video about Russian to knit fast ( The table cloth in the background distracted me so much I didn't catch everything) she mentions that they make the stitches behind the needles but I'm a crocheter, I have nothing to compare it to. There's an English lady with white hair and a blue sweater showing how to knit fast the English way; she's wearing a knitting belt which have never heard of and she mentions a knitting stick which I didn't know existed either, her way looks good and easy too. As for myself I am going to watch a few videos and then use my long Afghan crochet hooks to make sure I have a grip on the yarn and know where all the yarn is supposed to go when I'm loopin' and pullin'. It may be a bust but I'm going to try it that way! Surely I can't be the 1st crochet or who has tried to knit this way.... As a matter of fact I think I'm gonna ask Google for a RU-vid video on it.

Yep that's how I learnt. My Mum is Austrian and it's the European way of knitting. Didnt know it was called continental until just recently. My problem is Im left handed but I crochet righthanded and knit lefthanded, I know... whats that about. I was taught to crochet by my aunty so it was righthanded. Ive never progressed to learn to read patterns though so only knit one, pearl one and make a scarf. One day... I really want to make socks.
