Part 2 of a series on using continuous ridge lines with tarps and hammocks. This version I get a little long winded, so keep the FF button handy. This is another simple ridge line using minimal hardware that preserves the "V", or gap between the tarp ends and the anchor points so a hammock suspension line can be in the middle.

Awesome! Always more to learn. I love that bit about skills, and I completely agree. I'm a knot guy (I'm a scoutmaster, so it goes with the territory) but gadgets are still fun to tinker with. Never let gadgets come before skills.

Derek....I have been using "Zing it" for my continuous ridge line and is slick, light and makes adjusting the tarp efficient and easy. Also I simply leave it threaded with my hex tarp buried /packed away in my snake skins for easy deployment using same hardware. I find though using Dutch clips on my suspension straps and mounting them towards the side of the tree (as per Dutch's instructions) to reduce stress on both the clip and suspension strap, that the suspension straps favour one side or the other of the "V" and comes off the tree at near the same angle as the "v" versus down the middle of the "v". Combined at both ends, this makes the hammock lay offset from the tarp vs coinciding directly down the middle of tarp ridgeline for maximum coverage/ventilation and when in the hammock is very close to the tarp side, if not touching the tarp on the side being favored.. I have other suspension systems (whoopie slings, original Hennessy straps, the loop style etc) that lay down the middle of the "V" but specifically on this method of using the Dutch clips wondered if you have observed the same and how did you get around it without the additional stress on the suspension straps or Dutch clip by simply repositioned to the middle of the "v" not recommended by the Dutch clip instructions. I realize I can just live with it or simply move the clip from the side to the middle however attempting to avoid the stress on the equipment if at all possible. Thoughts? or a Solution ? using same setup if any? Thank You. By the way I have had your book and highly recommend to anyone getting into hammocking. It is my "go to" manual and has been highlighted, underscored and covered with margin notes. Well used in other words!! :-) and as an occasional camper/hammocker there is a tendency to forget after a long layoff ...so the "ultimate hang" sits in there with the hammock for easy reference. Thanks for any suggestion you have. Lou

Yes, that would also work very well. My intent was to get the Flyz/Stingerz as close to the tip of the fly as possible. A loop would work if you wrap it or tie it small enough. That is a very good idea!

Hey Derek, I really like the idea of the continuous ridge line. Suggestion to look at: you can eliminate the prusik (an extra component that could potentially unwind and get lost during take-down, storage and transit) on the Dutch Hook (DH) side. Simply tie a small Apline Butterfly Loop (ABL) in the ridge line a couple of inched from the Dutch Hook. Feed the very small DH thru the tarp ring and snap it on the ABL. Tying an APL is no more difficult than a prusik, and after it's tied once it remains there without any chance of getting lost.

I use the same hardware. I found that making a very small loop connecting the hook to the line eliminates the hook flopping around and makes it easier to hook after wrapping around the tree.

Joe, for some reason I can't respond directly to your comment, so I hope you get this. The pink like is 1.75 mm dyneema Zing-it or Lash-it throw line. A lot of folks sell it by the foot or yard; several places also sell it by the spool. It is not a Whoopie Sling, although the same methods are used to bury or "splice" the line. The loop is a a locked brummel. The cord has a hollow center so you can basically bury the line into itself to make an eye loop or other types of splicing. Do a search for making a whoopie sling and you'll find it.

nice one! to un-wrap the 8-figure wrap, i pull on the first end (the pinched one). This works perfect, without getting entangled. If the line i am wrapping is very long, i would double it, so it goes twice as fast.

Andrew, once the stingerz or flyz are secured, the tarp is set. It's easy to unhook and then adjust.
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 11 лет назад
You can place a tarp flyz or stingers on both ends to do end only tie outs. With flyz, you can tie the line to the tarp and then feed the line through the device and position the flyz to be near the tarp. The stingers have a hole in the device where the line can be attached and then you clip the stingerz to the tarp.

Yes and no. Unlike the two carabiner method, if you let go of the tarp, it will slide away. The trick is to hold the tarp and line together and center the tarp then clip the Tarp Flyz to the line to hold the tarp in place while you wrap the line around the tree. This one step is the key and it makes it work really well.

The other nice thing about that cord wrap is on deployment you can pull on that Dutch hook and it will feed out of the middle with out being tangled and you can walk the bundle to the other end. I have been trying to find out if you can use that Dutch gear with #36 bank line? Thanks for the video.

Derek, I just tried this setup in the wood behind my house. Do you find that you need to carry longer lengths of dyneema? Usually I just wrap around a tree and connect to the Dutch hook back to the dyneema. Then use a tarpflyz on the other side. Basically, I can only get the coveted "V" on one side of the hammock. Using your method, I need to use way more line to go around the tree and connect back to the tarp itself. Using my previous method with 30' of dyneema, I can get a tarp up between trees farther apart then I can using your method (both setups were with 30' of line) because I have more points of adjustment. I use soft shackles on prusiks to move the tarp where it needs to be. Just curious on your thoughts?
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 9 лет назад
continuous ridge lines and the V method both eat up a lot of line. The big disadvantage of the V method is that you have to use double the line length since you connect from the end of the tarp all the way around the tree and back again. Then you also have the line length that goes over or under the tarp. I'm not sure how this method uses any more line because it connects as close to the tarp as possible on both sides. But the V method surely does require twice the line length because it is doubled up on the ends. If your hang length is long, that could mean a lot of extra line.

Leafy; if you are using poles instead of trees I would not recommend this method or any continuous line because they don't work the same way. With poles, you don't have to center the tarp because it will already be centered between the poles. In this case, I would out tie outs/guy lines on the ends and stake them down.
@TheLeafyLane
@TheLeafyLane 11 лет назад
In case you would use tent poles instead of trees to fix the ridge line - e.g. in a camping situation without hammock - how would you route/attach the ridgeline over the spikes of the tent poles? Would you just let them run freely around pole where the pole meets the spike - assuming a taut ridge line eventually will keep things in place - a separate loop at each end attached to the ridgeline? Other??? Also what knots would you then use to attach any additional loops, rings, etc.
@jojo229er

It looks like as you tighten the working end you tighten the ridge line and tarp at the same time. Do you have problems with the Dyneema snagging on thick/rough barked trees making it difficult for the ridge line to tighten also? Thanks, great video.
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 8 лет назад
+jojo229er Yes. This is the benefit of a continuous ridge line in this fashion. From one point you can adjust the whole system. Dyneema is very slippery, and glides well over bark.

Derek, Quick question that I am having trouble finding. Can you run the ridge line under the tarp? Or does running the ridge line under the tarp cause a water leak? Specifically, s sil-nylon tarp. Found your website recently and have found a near endless amount of reading material :)
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 8 лет назад
+Jon Boy Thanks! Be sure to pick up my book. It's a great primer and answers a lot of questions if I'm not around :) I used to promote putting the ridgeline under a tarp more than over because it provided more structural integrity, especially in times of heavy precipitation like in snow. It turns out that going under introduces another problem of water seepage. I had this happen multiple times and now I do not recommend going under a tarp very often. Water doesn't leak through the fabric (unless it is PU coated) -- silnylon would be fine. The water seeps down the ridge line and then accumulates on the line until it drips down on top of you. The other thing to note is the impact of catenary curves. Many sil tarps today come with cat-cut edges, including ridge lines. Running a line under the tarp is actually counter to how the fabric is formed. It works much better to let the fabric pull taut naturally. Even straight-cut tarps will benefit from a natural catenary curve and pitch tighter if you let it go au' natural.

Nice! How do you rig your tarp these days? (3/14) I imagine a loopalien has replaced the dutchclip? I still like this CRL setup because it stops the poles from the tent pole mod on my superfly from touching the top of the tarp. Also its an extra like of defence if god forbid a widow make came down.

Honestly, I don't stick with just one method, although I most commonly use this "figure-8" method, regardless of what hardware I have at the time. Recently, I've been enjoying attaching my tarp directly to my hammock, the Hennessy way. It isn't ideal for every situation, but for quick set-up and take-downs, it is ideal.

Couldnt you eye splice the stinger on the fixed end, too? Seems like that would eliminate the need of having the extra loop that the dutch hook attaches to. Any concerns with doing it that way?
@josephkiloh4971
@josephkiloh4971 7 лет назад
This would mean you would have 2 stingerz instead of one, and you wouldnt have the dutch hook. I havent seen this in any of the videos I have watched which leads me to believe that this (for some reason) wouldnt work - i just dont understand why that might be.
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 7 лет назад
You could use two Stingerz. There is no right or wrong way. The approach I illustrate means you only have one point of adjustment, not two. This can be an advantage to speed setup time, reduce hassle, and keep frozen hands from too much work. Also less points of failure.

Hi Derek! Great Video! BTW That figure 8 wrap is actually called "Hanking the Rope". Sorry! I'm a bit of a purist. I believe in K.I.S.S.! Keep It Simple, Stupid! The less bingles and bangles the better off you are. I firmly believe in knowing skills. Skills don't weigh anything, take up no place in your pack, they never break and the only way to loose them is to stop practicing them. They reside in the most important piece of equipment you own - your brain. Keep on keeping on!

A ridgeline is not unique to a hammock or a tarp and can be used on both. Not all hammocks use ridgelines. It's a handy feature to help control the amount of sag and provide a place to hang gear or lift a bug net, but it isn't required. For a tarp, a continuous ridgeline can help with setup, but it isn't required.
@brianbassett4379
@brianbassett4379 5 лет назад
Having a small eye just means that you limit possibly using that same loop for something else. It's a common mistake of people that collect gear and never use it... much just as having a "short" bury. That aside, now you need to learn how to tie it all off using only knots. Keep that big cash in the account, save the weight (as minimal as it is), and L e a r n to use the technology of rope and lines (since it's been around for over 6000 years) before skipping to titanium and touting all it's "advantages". OR... just tell the truth and say you use it because it's the easiest possible way to hang a seldom-used hammock without having to know how to tie a knot. I own Dutchware also, I use it because it's easy, even mindless not because it is better in any way, just easier.
@DerekHansen
@DerekHansen 5 лет назад
I think the point here is that, for some, "easier" means "better". But I will defer and admit that "easier" is completely subjective. I think knots are pretty easy, but that's because I'm practiced and have a nostalgic link to knots, but acknowledge that the skill is not shared commonly.
@brianbassett4379
@brianbassett4379 5 лет назад
@@DerekHansen I think it may be shared more today on youtube than the Boy Scouts can with their dwindling numbers. I have never been good with knots, as my ex-commercial fisherman father-in-law would attest after having to cut a skiff rope I tied "that had been there since I bought the GD boat!" At least we didn't lose the skiff. I was off a little on rope making and use by humans also, it' more like the last 17000 years actually. I had just gone back to those wily Egyptians. I think people that use titanium hardware are just showing off in a way that they can. Don't know or want to learn to tie a knot... then use a line-lok.
