I have the patience, it’s the focus I’m having a hard time with. But I watch your videos and I’ll keep on going. Thanks Emily, another helpful video!

Focus takes practice! Best not to put too much pressure on yourself, start small with 30 mins a week dedicated to drawing practice of any kind!

@@kcphotographystudios8836 I have ADHD and I am a very good artist. The thing about ADHD is you either HATE a task or you get totally lost in it (hyper focusing on it). Art is the latter for me and helps me to work on patience and focus. It may help you to put some earbuds in and listen to some calming music that you love. This will help minimize outside distractions and music always makes art way better! On the flip- turn off visual distractions like TV. Good luck :)

I have a problem with coordinating my hands and eye. I have patience. I can have move hands as slowly as possible but. But I lost focus. My hands moves in the wrong direction.

Thats very normal! And that is why practicing contour drawing regularly is so valuable because it helps to improve your hand and eye coordination. I still draw the lines incorrectly sometimes. When your hand moves in the wrong direction, just notice it and then go back to where the line started and draw it again in the correct place - you might do this three or four times but each time you are learning how to coordinate what you see with what you draw. Dont rub anything out as it is just for practice, not for getting a pretty picture at the end!

What is exactly should be our practice training? Because every video i see most of them if not all say i should include that technique in my practice training...what should noob do? Include all? Or just the ones we are interested? 🤔
@ThePencilRoomOnline

Great question and its a difficult one to answer because as you say all of the artists and teachers you follow will have techniques that have really helped them that they recommend. Yes, include the ones that interest you and that are relevant to what type of drawing you want to do...contour drawing is great if you want to get better at drawing from observation but if you are interested in character design, it would be more useful to focus on anatomy. Think about what you want to achieve and match your practice to the that. Also try to assess your own work to see what is lacking - eg. if your shading is weak then do some shading practice every week. While I cant recommend a list of exercises that would suit everyone, what I would strongly suggest is that you split your drawing practice time into 'study' and 'drawing'. In 'study' you work on exercises you've chosen to improve particular skills, in 'drawing' you work on drawing subjects that you enjoy 🙂

Dumb question… if looking at page only 30%, is that only time I’m drawing or am I drawing on the page without looking at the page???
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline Год назад
No dumb questions! Ideally for contour drawing exercises you are moving your hand when you are looking directly at the object as well. As you look at the object and you focus on moving your eye along the edge, and your pencil moves at the same speed, recording what you see. You can glance at your page (and stop drawing if need to) to check you are on the right track. You could think of it this way: if you are only drawing while looking at your page, you are essentially relying on your memory of the object which is very difficult. If you can draw as you look at the object you are training a direct connection between your hand and you eye, moving together. Of course if it was that easy we wouldnt have to look at the page at all - so we need to use a combination of both. You could try blind contour drawing to really practice looking at the object if you are interested. Ultimately contour drawing is an exercise to improve observation and hand eye coordination - very few people can get a perfect drawing out of this practice, in proportion etc. so as valuable as this exercise is, dont put too much pressure on yourself to get the drawing 'right'.

Hey how to draw on the right side of the brain gang

Contour drawing is activating the right side of the brain! Another way is to turn a photo subject upside down and draw it 🙂
