Control & Consistency: Explaining Every BANNED Card in the Pokémon TCG’s Expanded Format Episode 5 

Heck, I used 4 Shaymin EX in my Zoroark GX deck before it got banned. And 4 in my Night March deck. And 4 in Lost March Turns out, before it got banned, Shaymin was arguably the best draw card in the game because of the lack of that hard 1PT clause lol

I remember pre buying 14 of skymin cause I thought it was gonna be nuts. One of the pokemon cards that I actually made a decent return out.

@@maskedfallen1331 I remmember there was a guy that did that same thing but with sesimitoad ex. Except instead of 14 he got his hands on over 60 copies of the card. That's what I heard from the players anyways.

I could very well be wrong, but I played the game during roaring skies and I'm 99.99% sure that everybody that actually played the game realized how insane shaymin EX was immediately. I'm hardly a tournament player, nor are my friends, but we all KNEW shaymin was gonna be silly good lol.

I do think it went from a $30 card to a $60 (regular) or $95 (full art) though. So apparently the player base didn't realize it was a staple 4 of in every deck. I respectfully concede that point

people did, but it was either noob bait or used as 1 offs, you are sacrificing your supporter for turn after all, and if you want to loop this strat over and over you need a way to add looker back, so you end up using your supporter for turn to get 2 cards from the discard... which sableye did without using your supporter

Yeah it's ultimately just a lot weaker than sableye + time puzzle. Essentially you absolutely need vs seeker to be one of the 3 cards returned with Oranguru simply because you actually need to loop looker. This means Oranguru will always return any 2 cards + vs seeker, and since you'll always use vs seeker right away it will only return you any 2 cards in the end. Which is exactly the same thing that sableye + time puzzle does, just with the difference that you can't play supporter cards. The only way for Oranguru to be better than Sableye + Time Puzzle is by decking yourself out and having two mons with a poképower that lets you draw a card. That way you will always draw 3 cards a turn, and you can choose these 3 cards from your discard pile.

Looker also has it's own whistle to search it out so it's not the worst idea even if it's a far cry from puzzle of time

I don't see the correlation though, those 3 things were introduced in different decades. The HOPT condition for Abilities (at the time Poké-Powers) was introduced in 2004. Shaymin-EX itself was released in 2015. The Rule Box keyword was introduced in 2021.

@@kwayke9 EX Hidden Legends introduced the condition (it could be earlier, but this is afaik). In that set, it shows up on Bellossom, Lanturn and the 4 Castform forms. The most famous Pokémon with a HOPT Poké Power is probably Pidgeot RG 10 with Quick Search. It has a generic search for 1 card effect. edit: tbh I get what you mean by Rule Box, it may have been at least partially due to Shaymin-EX or in consideration of Expanded in general. Though they didn't introduce it to "fix" Scoop Up Net or Shaymin-EX, they kinda just left it banned.

That combo can be done faster without the Lugia VSTAR trick or Wally. Still, the combo is evil; I'd argue DDE is the card to ban as it's the enabler right now.
