This is my two days at the Fargo Moorhead Skyliners 66th Annual control Line Contest in Fargo, North Dakota.... / fmskylarks Great competition. There was Stunt, Combat and Navy Carrier.
I grew up in Fargo and used to fly at that field in the early 70's. Fantastic to see that it is still there! I lived on 25th avenue north and when this one guy with a jet engine CL plane would show up I could hear him from home and I would get on my bicycle and fly to the park!
Whoo Buddy!!!! Congratulations Shug! Really proud of you! My favorite is probably the cloverleaf. Never knew or seen a pit crew in that. Great job by them! Thanks for taking us along ❤
Been flying CL since 82 and RC since 95. Got out of both for awhile to do the Harley thing. Now I do all 3 love to build and have a HUGE collection of engines, kits, and supplies.
Thank you. Here is whole Control Line playlist.....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jhMX1ANGRb4.html And I used to fly R/C....ru-vid.com/group/PLahaAdtfX9ZLW32PEiLX2iAN7MG_ZtUSs
Classic video Shuge - please don’t stop making these type of videos! I started off with a Cox Piper J3 Cub from Toys R Us when I was a kid that I totally forgot about until I randomly came across one of your videos. Your videos alone made me interested in a hobby I totally forgot that existed.
I fly control line because of my memories of being a kid doing it. Brings a good feeling. An escape of the doom and gloom being thrust on us constantly.
I had a couple of Cox models when I was a kid also. I still have a tackle box chocked full of about 10 different Cox engines, and many parts. There's an .010, an .020, and a bunch of .049s in it. The planes are long gone, crashed into many pieces years ago. The engines are all I have left. My buddies and I would fly shop rags once our planes were all smashed to bits, but the engines still ran. They looked like ghosts in the sky. 👻 Sometimes I think the shop rags flew better and more graceful than our planes did. I think one of the last Cox control line models I had was a B2 Stealth Bomber. It actually flew fairly well for the design, but of course, I probably had it crashed within a week of getting it. I'll have to haul the engines out one of these days, screw 'em to a piece of wood, and run 'em up just to bring back the memories. Now, as an adult, I have a few .40-.60 sized sport planes, but I'm not an accomplished pilot like you guys are. Keep it up!!... 👌
Love love love the Nobler!!! Takes me back to the seventies watching my uncle Sonny fly his control line Nobler. I actually taught him how to fly R/C after I learned how. We had lots of fun times together! By the way Lando is a fine chap, but MAX is the MAN! Watching the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend!!!
Nobler looks good in the air too from the middle of the circle. Lando is nipping at Maxes rear. FP1 and Quali in the morn. Looking forward to the GP before summer break.
I flew control line airplanes back in the 70's.. I was just a kid, but it was serious fun. Fuel it up, attach the battery to heat up the glow plug.. and go!
Congratulations shug. A respectable 3rd. On a side note, was at Hampden Park 🏴 sunday nite with my daughter to catch the incredible R.H.C.P ( last time we went was 2006 at T in the Park, she was only 10) . Definitely think you could fill in for Mr. Balzary if he drops out. Atleast you wear similar hats. Ian
@@shugemery i think you guys were separated at birth. Or as we say in Glasgow " a different cheek from the same ****. And that's a compliment. 🙄. Love yer vids shug, look forward to the next one. Kind regards to you. Ian
Howdy and thanks. Glad you getn out and doing some strang flying. I'm thinking a plane made to look like a Bass guitfiddle. Better yet "The Flying Hammock". I don't mean to keep beating this poor old horse post mortem but I do get dizzy just trying to look up into the night sky. Y'all are lucky. Enjoy and thanks again.
You know I really love the gas planes a lot more than the electric. Sound, smoke and castor oil to clean up after each flight. Flight box, glow plug, battery clip-on, starter on the nose cone. Just more fun and more real to me.
Dude; brought back some fond memories. I can’t believe that guy flew that pulse jet without support. Only remember guys flying that with an arm support on a post with a swivel cradle. 😳
Hey Shug I'm late to this party but its grt to see U posted another fine vid, they're inspirational for sure. I'm a transplant in Tampa Fla from LI Ny and miss the contest action we would go all over NJ PA MA NH it was grt and i was good company with Windy Lampione Modesto Palko and of course Banjok, man what a crowd. No so much action dwn here the closest C/L field is 1+ away, I do a flt here and there with my trusty ole Nobler at my rc field but haven't been able to hook anybody back into it. It sucks flying alone though after all those years in NY but im about to join a different rc club, its got better smoother grass 😊 & more open space 👍 so will see what happens. All the best to you & keep the vids coming thank you
Those are some big names. I watched all of Windy's videos. I've met Dan Banjok and he was really a good guy. Helped me out at my first contest in NC. Hope you hook some RC guys in. Thankee for your comment.
It's so fun to see you be so competitive! There are some mighty fine flyers at that event, it looks like. I wondered about whether CL flyers had made the jump to electric or not. I bet it's more fun with glow fuel.
This is simply amazing to watch Shug! Thanks for sharing this awesome event. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Now you really want to do something exciting and I got to do this out in Chandler, Arizona. I actually got the hang glide. Talk about the feeling of flying.
Great work capturing the feel of the contest Shug. Loved the reaction to the pulse jet. Pretty much exactly the same as I had when I saw my first one at the NATs held at Westover AFB in Massachusetts way back when. You are really bringing back some great memories of stunt and combat flying in the 80’s. Enjoy your work to get ready for next years contest. Thank you very much for all that goes into these presentations
Your way ahead of me. All my glow engines are in a box and my foam core wings for New England Slow Combat are on a dusty shelf. Again your videos have showcased UC flying very well and I am sure they have shown many soho would have never seen the sport gain a bit of understanding. Enjoy the Fall.
Im interested for sure. I've thought/reminisced about u control flying on and off for the past few years since it was some of the nest times spent with my dad when I was a kid during the late 60's early 70's. Suprised and thrilled that there is such a interest and following in such an old school simple way of having a good time. Use to be pretty goud at this so long ago but Im in to doing it again. Just need to familiarize myself again with 2 stroke engines again. Cant wait to put one together again.
That flying field has been there a long time. Homes have been encroaching. More than likely the field will be lost as it the way of this world. I read an article of people complaining about paddle ball courts near their homes. So it goes....
Great job Shug! I have watched many C/L videos and I must say that was up at the top. If you are ever in So Cal I would love for you to come to our field and introduce you to the club, (The knights of the round circle) and have some the second best BBQ ever, Its not South Carolina Piedmont style but its good. Your pattern looks really good just keep flying. W.W.
I do recall seeing feasts at your house on videos! Glad you are well and good. Never know if i'll get out that way but truly appreciate your offer. Thankee on the pattern.
Nitro is awesome. In today's dying world of nitro, I still run them, and always will. I have several sport planes, an eighth scale 4WD buggy, a tenth scale stadium truck, and a monster truck, ALL nitro powered. The current Lithium batteries certainly pack a PUNCH, but to me, they're nowhere as exciting as 30,000 explosions per minute propelling your vehicle around. And electrics just sound wimpy compared to a nitro engine. 💥🔥
@@shugemery Good question thanks. I took up radio flying when Covid hit and now I fly radio models in Northern Thailand. I miss my control line flying days.
Great flying, great atmosphere, great videos... I still cannot fly the whole pattern, trying to get past the square loop... Love to see your excitement, great inspiration! Tight lines!
Thankee. You can start learning the square 8 by just coming out of level flight and make a square on the first turn to vertical and just loop on out from there. One square corner at a time until you can do all 4. Bite size pieces.
Way to go Shug. Congratulations on making on the podium. Look us up next time your in the Tampa area. We will have a plane for you to fly. All secure in sector 5. 😂
Congrats on third place in your first official competition. Thanks for sharing once again. Brings back memories of my control line days before electric was even popular. It is a tough skill to learn, and you have mastered it.
@@shugemery just discovered you. I was watching one of your videos from 9 years ago so glad to see this video. I never really got past a wing over. So any pointers on how to loop would be great.
@@brentonsmith-pw2rp This video at 8 minutes in I give some looping tips while flying.....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EDQ78weWDjc.htmlsi=bpZM8Qh0ViMrzVcv Also this may help....brodak.com/solo_flight
Depends on engine size, size of the plane, speed, set-up, trim and line rake. So I'm not really sure but when set up right just enough to keep the lines tight and not pulling the flyer too much. In stunt flying we are shooting for a 5.2 second lap time average. More thrust than actual speed.
HI SHUG 👋 HAD A FRIENDS DAD WHO FLEW THEM OVER AT OUR CHURCH & SOMETIMES WHEN NOBODY WAS AT OUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FIELD WHEN THERE WAS NOBODY THERE . I THINK HE LET ME TRY IT ONCE SCARED I WOULD CRASH IT FOR HIM . I WOULD HOLD IT FOR HIM UNTIL HE WAS READY FOR IT TO TAKE OFF , PRETTY COOL 😎 TO WATCH . CONGRATULATIONS ❗ COMBAT SEEMED PRETTY FIERCE HAVE TO KEEP YOUR MIND ON POINT ! HOPE YOU MADE BACK HOME SAFELY 🏡 BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏
Great job Shug. Terry&ThePirates South Florida PS. I sent you the custom VooDoo II. You should fly with 70’ lines and some tail weight. A video tape streamer @ 20’
Still have that plane in the Nut-Hut.!! I never fly combat 'cause I don't want to like combat and I know I'll like combat. All I need is to add another hobby....haaaaa. I promise to get it out again someday.
I hate combat myself. I love the ships.. I fly total Free -Style. I like the longer lines to slow the lap times. Get your streamers long enough so that you can Cut your own tail.. overhead 8’s are crazy cool..
Louise’s is for sale!! We can’t let this happen! I think it’s time for you and the fam to move to Linville and open up Shug’s Famous Rockhouse Barbecue! I’ll move here and work the pits for you! It would be a big deal. 😎
Still have my Fox .35 from 65 years ago. Bought plans for my first airplane, the Ringmaster, a few years ago. I gotta get back into this. One question: What's a muffler?
They are pretty much a requirement now for most clubs. Just in case....brodak.com/engines/mufflers-1/extended-tongue-muffler-for-fox-35-40th-anniv.html
Always love watching your videos and watching you fly because I just can't fly my planes that well. The Pulse jet, first time seeing that. Is there a competition among those flyers also? I know I've seen those small planes with a 1/2 wing fly where the pilot holds onto a pole in the center. Not sure what those are called but wicked fast also. How do you not get dizzy after that flight?
The pulse jets are just a show thing. No competition that I know off. We get used to circling so we don't really get dizzy. Plus you stand still for the maneuvers for a moment to stop circling. I think the 1/2 thing you allude to is Speed Flying and they use a pylon at the handle. A lot of range in the sport/hobby actually. There is also Scale flying.
@@shugemery yeah once I got into f2d I can say that I’ve found my favorite for sure, I still enjoy stunt, but I think super fast, high maneuverable combat planes is more fun for me
That was great, bad luck, yeah, yeah, with engine trouble and wind and such, but still on podium at the end. And Lando was too, but he binned the trophy if memory serves me correctly :) (at least not his own, I'm Hungarian, and there was no offense taken, don't believe the haters)
