Lecture Title: "The Golden Age of Analog (It's Now)"
Speaker: Alexander Galloway
About Alexander Galloway:
Alexander R. Galloway is a writer and computer programmer working on issues in philosophy, technology, and theories of mediation. Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University, he is author of several books on digital media and critical theory, including The Interface Effect (Polity 2012) and most recently a monograph on the work of François Laruelle titled Laruelle: Against the Digital (Minnesota 2014). Galloway was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Spring 2012.
About Control Societies:
Control Societies was started as part of the School of Social Policy & Practice’s initiative on Culture, Society, and Critical Policy Studies in order to feature and engage cutting edge scholarship on the enumerating acts of governmentality in computational culture and the incalculable possibilities of justice. For the 2017/2018 academic year, the School of Social Policy & Practice will continue its speaker series in partnership with the Annenberg School for Communication, which produces scholarship on the social, cultural, economic, and political implications of digital information and communication technologies, networks, and systems. Through the speaker series, the organizers aim to explore the philosophical foundations of algorithms, data, and their intersections with governmentality, surveillance, social policy, and the reconfiguring of power relations.

It seems Kittler is the missing name here, who offered a nuanced thinking of analogue and digital technical media and their relation with the symbolic (the latter being neither, or the precursor of both). Crucially this was achieved by bracketing metaphysics, suspending the authority of its claims by considering the possibility of its history as an epiphenomenon of that of media.
