Qualifying was just wild. The dragster developed an electrical problem that led to a huge explosion. As well a major oil down caused the entire top fuel class to pull out of line and not run a qualifying session. Buckle in and enjoy this episode it’s a whole lot going on. #nitro #car #racing

@@claymillican25 Am waiting to see the 'Race Day'' video when You are able to complete the editing, uploading, posting. My background [get the pun too] included expertise within electrical, electronics, engineering, design, development, verification, testing, trouble shooting, certification, along with mechanical,, mechanics, structure/al, motor vehicles, etc. As Bruce stated specifically, the measurements show a voltage drop, from 16 +V to 5 V not complete cut from a short, thus something is limiting the power, energy flow such the voltage drops, seeming under specific conditions with electrical power load; from the limited information conveyed in this video. Bruce described a possibility of a wire, as smashed to limit the flow, as many compare electrical energy flow to liquid flow, though incorrect. However, a partially broken, stranded, main power wire cable with low electrical power, energy flow will show the proper voltage, allow low current, electrical energy flow, but with required higher energy flow will not allow the power, energy to flow, as a smaller gauge, thickness wire cable. If the main cable is a solid wire, then the entire wire is intact, connected or broken, thus this would not occur. From the information which Jesse, head engine crew, stated with the batteries or one not switched, perhaps one or both had failure to produce the full power, thus dropped voltage or there may be some simpler carbon build up, oil or conductive materials, elements which were on, around the batteries, cables, connections such they conduct small amounts, then under load increases. My assessment is based upon the information contained in the video, which is certainly not complete, and requires a full, proper electrical investigation, trouble shooting to determine precisely the cause of the voltage drop under the load conditions. This troubleshooting process with proper methods, tools is simple and could perform this easily, rather quickly If anyone with thee basic knowledge including me was there; proper electrical technicians are capable, knowledgeable enough; seemingly Dennis would know enough too. Hopefully, the problem, issue was determined, corrected and All Y'All were able to have successful runs on "Race Day"; except for the electrical issues, voltage drop, along with it, the Jim O clearly seems to have the race car settings well figured for the track, situation. Your video recording, editing, uploading, posting with all of the content is much appreciated. This is the closest that am able to view any drag racing, since my current residence over seas along the Mediterranean, does not have any racing events, tracks [recently opened a F3 track for developing drivers, teams]. The Authoritarian Gov't does not allow vehicle modifications, including engine swaps except the same as delivered with the vehicle. Have seen a rare couple of old 1960's US manufactured, modified vehicles, which were certainly imported individually, allowed. No idea how they maintain them here since the performance, modification parts, components are not available, imported. I was there. I saw the crew, as well as yourself working on the car after the "boom". You all worked hard to get to the bottom of the issue. As a fan, I understand the Friday night call to not run the cars after that oil down. The lanes were not equal. And you are correct, there wasn't enough time at the end of the day to get everyone down the track. Yes it would have been fun to see speeds in the cool night air, but in the end it made the field all in the same position. Thank you so much for signing my shirt and taking a picture with me. Wishing you the best of luck for the rest of the season.

Clay Millican I would say the oil problem was synthetic oil, we had problems with it at Willowbank Raceway in QUEENSLAND Australia when it first was used by TF. It takes a different procedure to deal with over mineral oils. I can’t believe that any NHRA used track doesn’t have lighting. All our big and even a lot of smaller tracks here all have lights many with LED or about to get LED. As for your electrical issues it seems to appear after 660’ , you don’t get problems before that if it only happens after lockup perhaps its an issue with chassis flex affecting either a component or the wiring. If you’ve replaced all the modules and its still happening then obviously its in the wiring. Certainly not an engine issue as it still did it after the change. Good luck from QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.

Insulation breakdown somewhere (chemical decomposition of an electrical insulation component)? Super hard to trace and often only apparent when the gremlin is hot. There are so many possibilities when trying to troubleshoot electrical "gremlins", especially with all of the electronics involved. This one sounds like an issue caused only while the chassis is under the stresses of a run, like tension being placed on a connector or a wire being pinched.

So, if NHRA had given the ok immediately to run that session of TF qualifying in the right lane only, would there have been time to get every car down the track before it got too dark? If that's the case, then the "blame" is on NHRA for dragging their feet. It was clear that the left lane wasn't fit to run on and there wasn't time to rework it before it got dark. And there's no way to do qualification in the dark. So for me, the only question is whether NHRA could have given the ok to run right lane only soon enough.

Oh, one more thing... I think the Safety Safari probably could have taken care of the oil down the first time if the FC driver (who I will not name here) had done the right thing and gotten the car off to the side as soon as it was safe to do so rather than idle the rest of the way down the track. It takes a lot more time to resurface the entire track than just the first 2 or 3 hundred feet.

A short circuit doesn’t always have to have a full short to ground, you can have a high-resistance short to ground giving you a voltage drop instead of a total loss of voltage. Mechanical stresses such as g-loading or flexing can cause a temporary high-resistance short to occur. When the stress goes away so does the short.

Always hated when these sorts of gremlins reared their ugly heads. And are so costly. You have probably found it by now but. Just a suggestion, seems what I have found is anytime there is erratic voltages and / or spikes and drops, 90% of the time the issue is on the ground side of things. Look for a damaged ground connection or high resistance ground cable and check the resistance through the ground side of the related components. I had rigged up a something similar to paint shaker to secure components to while testing with volt/ohm meter. Something may test fine on the bench but had vibration or heat to it and viola! PS... 3.68 looked great. Hope the gremlins have been cast out of the Parts Plus car for Indy and the Countdown!

Wow, that was a big KABOOM! Massive carnage and malice in the combustion palace.Glad no one was hurt. That sucks Clay, but your team will figure it out. Always listen to that butt o meter, it keeps you safe Clay. Your team got it together quickly after the kaboom. Mad respect for the Parts Plus team and their never say die attitude. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! Stay safe y’all, God Bless.

CLAY I noticed after the rebuild the exhaust was much cleaner , that original motor was belching out clouds of nitro .

My guess is a faulty solenoid coil and or associated wiring on one of the last couple of stages of clutch engagement. The fault seems to happen when the clutch locks up fully and isn't present during the warm up or the burnout or before 300ft. Faulty coil will drag the system voltage down.

Glitches are a real PITA to track down. For what it's worth, if you haven't already found the problem, look for a bad or loose crimp on a a pin in a multi pin connector or lug. A short would likely leave evidence or blown fuses, if there are any. A loose connection or crimp would be more likely to come and go with the vibration and g loading.

Electrical gremlins are no fun. When I was at hot rods and coffee the old guys group all wanted my stomp on that loud pedal shirt. We all decided to open the cutouts up and have a stomp on that loud pedal competition. Of course it helps when 3 guys in the group are law enforcement LOL

Clay, in 1984, I had a Polaris TXL 340 cc that would hook up on grass, 100% traction, and record 95mph in five hundred feet.
