Next up for Top Rank Boxing, the matchups have changed, but a high-octane heavyweight doubleheader will still go down Saturday, Jan. 14, at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Ajagba-Shaw and Vianello-Rice will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ and includes a 10-round junior lightweight tilt between Adam “BluNose” Lopez and Abraham “El Super” Nova.

In my opinion, this fight is quite possibly the greatest display of elite level ring IQ and technical skills in boxing history - put on by two of the most complete boxers I have ever seen. How I wish we got to see McCallum fight the Four Kings, maybe then he would have got the flowers he deserved. James Toney is one of the most naturally gifted fighters ever. Both legends of the sport!

My favourite fight and watched it dozens of times for the mastery of the sweet but brutal science of boxing..From when I watched this when it happened to now I’ve always had Toney edging it, the fight was even up until the last round where Toney was the more affective aggressor. It’s only in the slow motion moments that you appreciate how subtle the boxing is, McCallum with his busier jab and body punches and Toney with his left hooks (Which I believe won him the fight, McCallums swelling under his right eye was evidence of this) and big right hands. James Toney is one of my favourites (Along with Hearns, Chavez, Hagler and Sanchez) from when I started watching boxing form the early eighties. But I’ve always admired Mike McCallum because he was a real throwback to the golden era. The amazing achievement is that he is 35 years old in this fight and must of had to boil down a bit to make weight (Toney was always notorious for this) yet his conditioning was unbelievable. The great thing is they fought two more times, their styles complemented each other so their fights were always going to be close and controversial. Many Thanks🥊
@JuggoJuggo
@JuggoJuggo Год назад
There is also something to be said about being ringside, hearing and seeing the punches that are landed. James had power that starched cruiserweights, seems like Toney's power was on different level than Mike's. Mike took it like a freaking champ though, some of those punches would at least stagger even good fighters at higher weights, but he came back after every exchange like a warrior. Looking back on this fight makes their performances even that much better.

One of the greatest skilled fights you'll ever see by both fighters, two legends of the game. McCallum vs Toney ended up having 3 fights. Tony in his prime at 23 & McCallum at 35 in the end of his career & put on a masterclass from Rd 1 to 12.

He's my favorite fighter. James was a 200lbs running back in high school, got a scholarship to play football, got hurt, then decided to be a boxer. They melted him down to fight at middleweight, he struggled to make weight in his first fights, let alone keeping him at that weight. Roy Jones Jr said after his fight with James, that Toney should have went up to cruiserweight and I agree. James could have been a bit more disciplined, but he wasn't a natural middle.
@mdmcdd1117
@mdmcdd1117 11 месяцев назад
LMAO! I spoke to him once. He said that as the money came, it was harder to stay hungry and disciplined. And then, he had the belief in himself that nobody could beat him no matter what shape he was in. He said he didn't train hard for the Jones fight because he didn't believe that Roys skill level could match his, but he paid for it. Toney looked very good as a cruiserweight
@JuggoJuggo
@JuggoJuggo 11 месяцев назад
@@mdmcdd1117 Roy's top attribute wasn't skill, he was probably the best athlete that ever put on gloves. That fighting rooster style coming at you with the speed of a lightweight was pretty unbeatable when Roy was at his physical peak, Toney would've had to had been in top condition.

They gave him absolutely everything they needed to as a fighter. because he could do absolutely everything and he had another GEAR when he needed it. @@alvindavis4158 lol, thank you Alvin! Ricardo Lopez is difficult to place because of the quality of his opposition. Off the top of my head, the only fighter he fought that REALLY gets credit is Rosendo Alvarez, and really the only reason (or the biggest reason I should say), that he gets that credit is because he had a draw with Lopez and dropped him and a lot of people thought that he won. And Lopez never went up to fight Gonzalez and Carbajal in his day. When he did go up, either those guys were gone or he just didn't fight them. I think he fought Will Grigsby and the South African and called it a day. Something like that. But if I go by just what I saw, the 'eye test'. You could put them in any order that you want, in terms of non active fighters, it's Chavez, it's Sanchez and it's Ricardo Lopez. I'd put him that high based on what I SAW from him. I think he beats Chiquita Gonzalez and Michael Carbajal in good fights, but we'll never know, obviously. But Lopez doesn't have the resume that guys like... Barrera, Morales, Marquez and Olivares..... so if you want to put them over him, I understand that.
@LucieOne
@LucieOne Год назад
@@alvindavis4158 Barrera was like he had the answers against Hamed. He already knew what he was going to do - literally ducking before he even threw the punch. Ducking out of the way of those crazy uppercuts Hamed had because he knew the exact angle they were coming at. If they fought 10 times, maybe Hamed lands something crazy and wins once, but I'd pick Barrera every time. Nice talking to you Alvin.

I remember watching this fight live on PPV with Marvin Hagler commentating. McCallum gave up his title belt to make the fight happen therefore, in my mind it was a unification bout. I knew McCallum was tough as hell and should never be underestimated yet Toney had everything going for him after knocking out Michael Nunn and I remember saying he is nuts for going after McCallum with his experience. This fight was so close, and a draw was justified. I had McCallum outboxing toney for the most part but Toney took over rounds with his killer instinct and at times really threatened to Knock McCallum out. Toney fought like he didn't know how to lose, and McCallum fought in a way that was to teach the upstart about the sweet science. Great fight!

Commentary is typically biased. Toney was doing well but he missed a lot where the idiot commentators screamed how he’s landing rights. He landed plenty yet McCallum was a deceiving boxer with a great defensive skillsets. He rolls and pulls just enough that many punches are only glancing. Mike was much busier the whole fight constantly throwing double even triple jabs yet the lip service was all about Toney’s big rights. Marvin was lucky McCallum was a light middleweight. 10th round and the idiots once again exaggerate Toney’s barrage of misses but talk like he’s landing. No mention of Mike out striking him once again. Toney was landing well but not as stated by the idiots. Don’t get me wrong I love Toney to this day, he’s one bad man. One of my favorites all time. But Mr. McCallum was a special fighter. Dodged by several boxers of his day even when he was past his prime as he is here. 35 vs. 23 yet Mike took everything Toney landed and went the distance. Both are great fighters. In how they are able to move when hooks are coming down on their body or head. They just move with the punch and slip that punch . Perfect timing . I must agree with the judges. It was a draw. Boxer Tony was behind on the score cards, He redeemed his self. There should be a re-match . I don't know if they ever had a re-match.

13:34 mark Trump sitting along side a blond woman in black. Could be his wife. Toney strong to the end, yet the accuracy was less in the late rounds. McCallum a lot more touches throughout the fight, yet Toney weighed in with the most heavy blows - by far. Mike made the fight with the jabbing and proximity. Toney didn't have to go and find him, he was there jabbing his way to points. That left at around 1:20 of the last round rocked Mike to the bone, yet he managed to keep his balance and slipped a few, yet continued to toke more punishment. Both on fumes, but Toney's best round for sure. I feel a draw is in order. Can't give it Toney, wasn't busy enough and can't give to Mike either, because he didn't do enough to beat Toney

I really enjoyed watching 👀 this boxing fight (Toney (23) vs McCullum (35)). Give credit to the referee he was jumping and moving around in that ring throughout the whole fight. In the very first round I really thought Mike McCullum owed James Toney some money 💰 🤑 💸💲 💵 the way he started throwing powerful powerful punches 👊 👊 🤜 🤛 ✊️ 👊 ✊️ 🤛 🤜 from the start. This definitely could've been the fight of that year.

How can this fight be a draw, or even a split decision. James Toney won outright and the referee nearly stopped it in the last second of the 12th round because McCallum was in such bad shape, taking damaging punishment

A great fight between two elite level fighters who were boxing technicians..... this was not a controversial decision.... I don't think that macallum did enough to get the decision and I don't think that Toney deserved to lose.....a draw was a good result for both fighters...

This says James was 5 11 which was believable because it goes along with his 75 inch reach. He was listed as 5 9 towards the end if his career. Im guessing its because he gained so much weight? And how great of a coach was Bill Miller.

Except for Hagler the commentators were so biased against McCallum it was unbelievable. Among other deliberate ugliness that they have mentioned furing the bout how could they say that James won rounds 9, 10, & 11 . When we it was so obvious for others watched the fight to see Tony loosing all three , he Tony was missing so mush if his shots of desperatiin while being countered by Mike . This disappointment the gave for mike not having a history of knocking out opponents in the division showed that they were not prepared to accept that Macallum could out box Tony and get the fight sadly and so did two of the Judges . They ascwell as most people who followed bixing that Mike was not the kind of fighter so it should not have been expected . Now lets go back and look at Toney's face from the 8th round onwords he knew he was loosing the fight and at the 10th he knew he had lost the fight if he didnt knock out Mike in the 11th. and he failed at this . Look at Tony's wild punches at the beginning of the 11th this showed how he felt about his chances of winning they were now very slim for the fight was not to have gone this far he was as tired as Mike and he was nuch younger , he Toneyv had to get this knock down, if not the knockout . We see Tony missing so much in the 12th round . Macallum didn't do much in the round not because he was exhausted but also because Tony was not fighting any more but was swinging desperately trying get Mike to the floor Toney lost it was too obvious . I guess Hagler must have been embarrassed to have sat there with these insult to boxing calling themselves professional commentators.

Whomp whomp🤣🤣 toney won the fight so what if he was missing wild with his punch toney punches landed big and harden than mccallum pitter patter punch and toney right hand landed hard on mccallum toney should’ve taken the decision in this fight, the second fight I can see mccallum winning that fight with those pitter patter punch but the judges really messed up with those score card.
