I love the black and white era and think the lack of colour makes a lot of the stories far more atmospheric and mysterious. Without Hartnell and Troughton we wouldn't be even having a conversation about Dr Who!

@@balogkrisztian8440 Season 9 is one of my least favorite seasons of the show. Only The Sea Devils is a classic in my opinion, the rest of the season is either meh or outright bad. While the Pertwee era is not exactly solid gold, what makes is special is that no story downright sucks, it is consistently watchable and has a very solid foundation of regulars with the Doc, Jo, the Brig and the Master. My most controversial opinion is that Resurrection of the Daleks is one of the very best Dr Who stories of all time, mostly due to the ending where the Doctor's decision to execute Davros is not only something he cannot go through with, but seems to drive Tegan to finally leave. His line about needing to change his ways really haunts me because I'm sure he's sincere but it will never happen. He will always fight evil, yet it will also drive him to do things he finds objectionable in the heat of battle.

Pertwee era is the most dragged era in all of Who. His stories are consistantly too long and it starts to get boring too fast. Stories in itself are good, but they are veeeeeery loooong. Most has 6+ episodes and it hurts
@adriansherlockdamondark.1094
@adriansherlockdamondark.1094 2 года назад
@@meurer13daniel I agree the padding is the biggest weakness of the era, but the padding means we get five or four great stories instead of four great stories and three that are crappy, which is what often happened when JNT did seven stories per season in the 1980s. And the padding is not always a bad thing, as it can be fun or interesting to get more details about characters.

For me, the Pertwee era isn't great because of the stories - it's great because of the chemistry between the main cast of Pertwee, Manning, Courtney, Delgado, Levene and Franklin. The fact that none of them are very sophisticated actors allows their real-life friendship to shine through. Absolute casting gold that more than compensates for the occasional weak story.

Not controversial in the slightest. 100% should have been a regenerated Rani. Only reason to make her the master was as a trojan horse for a female doctor. Funny how soon as there's a female doctor she's changed back to a man again.

@mrjekyllandhyde9941 2 года назад
Definately ! the Master is a male character and if they wanted a classic female Timelord she should have been the Rani. Missy was blatantly a stepping stone to prove the Doctor can be female . At the time I remember thinking "well I guess that means we are getting a female Doctor next" 🙄and I never buy the argument that because Michelle Gomez was a good actress and played an interesting character that it was okay, nope, it should have never been done no matter how good the actress was, that was the start of the awful sex swap lore and I might sound like a broken record but the Master is a male character, and so is the Doctor.

Great video as always, if I were to give a controversial opinion for each Doctor's era: First Doctor: Richard Hurndall does a better job in The Five Doctors than David Bradley does in Twice Upon a Time (maybe not looks wise but performance is far superior). Second Doctor: Evil of the Daleks is a complete snooze fest with far too much unengaging plot threads going on and only gets good when we get to Skaro. Third Doctor: Pertwee adapted to the role the quickest and played the part at a consistantly high level from his first episode all the way until his last, something that no other actor who has played the part for more than 3 years has done (with the exception of Capaldi). Fourth Doctor: I actually prefer his Season 18 outfit over any of his others, with his Season 12 look being my least favorite. Fifth Doctor: Earthshock is one of my least favorite episodes. I have never understod why people like these hokey versions of the Cybermen and bar Adric's death, there is nothing much for me to enjoy. Sixth Doctor: The technicolor outfit isn't the worst ensemble the Doctor has worn and I actually think it suits Colin. Seventh Doctor: I strongly dislike the way McCoy plays the part and even in his darker moments, it is hard for me to take him seriously. Eighth Doctor: The TV Movie is better than The Night of the Doctor. The minisode is only good because we get to see McGann again but it exists only to kill the last vestages of Classic Who before the 50th and to create a brand new Doctor instead of just putting McGann into the 50th. Also, The TV Movie is just great in it's own right. Ninth Doctor: There is not a single bad episode in Series 1, the weakest for me is Rose just because the climax falls flat due to the amount of setup the story had to do and even then it's still a pretty good story. Tenth Doctor: The Tenth Doctor is only a good character in Series 4 where he actually feels like a proper character before it crashes back down in End of Time. Before that he is far surpasses The Sixth Doctor in terms of arrogance and rudeness. Tennant's portrayal is also hit and miss Eleventh Doctor: While the stories may not be on the same level as the Tennant era, Smith played the part far better. Twelfth Doctor: Capaldi is hands down the best actor to play the role only really being rivaled by John Hurt but besides that, no one can touch him. Thirteenth Doctor: While there are many reasons why I can't really get into this era, the main one is I don't think Jodie is a convincing enough actress to pull this part off. She has had moments and the subpar writing isn't doing her any favors but it starts and stops with her acting ability and I just don't think it's really there. In the hands of a better actress I would probably like this era a little more.
@jensablefur155

Pertwee era is definitely inconsistent. There was a stability and friendly atmosphere among cast and crew behind the scenes in production from season 8 to 11 which I think has led to this perception that its a solid run of quality content, but there are so many 6 part stories in those years which swing and miss. Modern Who is way too obsessed with changing the tardis interior. Seriously guys just stick with a fantastic one which fans love and stay with it. Shaking the set design up so regularly should never have been a thing. Modern doesn't need to be as fanservicy as some people seem to want it to be. We don't need to see the Rani, the Valeyard or Sutekh to "come back". We don't need references to Classic Doctors and events. And I say this as someone who prefers Classic. Allow it to forge ahead and do its own thing. In hindsight we're lucky Classic was pulled when it was. If the show had spluttered through the 90s it would have been competing with the X files and Red Dwarf for its target audience and would have dropped far lower than it did in the perception of the public. It would likely never have come back if it really declined for several years and I think on balance the late 80s was a good time to put it on ice. As much as I like 4, seasons 15 to 17 are without a doubt the weakest 3 consecutive years in Classic Who for me. While some of the over-arching concepts such as the timeless child stuff will never wash, I genuinely think 13 and a whole batch of the current episodes (especially from Flux) are going to be far more positively reappraised when the dust settles. Daleks Master Plan is a bit shit and almost completely carried by William Hartnell and Kevin Stoney. Why this pulpy mess has been seen with such high regard in the last few years with several people unironically putting it at the top of their Hartnell stories just totally bewilders me. the middle episodes in particular where they do "The Chase but worse" are just awful.

I generally agree 1. I'm not as big a fan of Pertwee as a lot of fans seem to be some even rating him over my favorite which is Tom Baker, which is fine and his era was okay but, I prefer other eras 2. I agree New Who is obsessed with changing the Tardis interior. Classic did this occasionally but not with every Doctor. I'll always prefer the classic white interior so I don't get the joy out of new interiors that some seem to applaud 3. I agree New Who is overly fanservicy and I wish they could do their own thing without constantly re-writing classic Doctor Who which really puts me off a lot of new stuff. 4. In hindsight you are probably right about the cancellation. But I will always be a big fan of the 7th Dr 5. I love pretty much everything in the Tom Baker years but I have heard people saying that they think the later end of his era wasn't very good. 6. I doubt 13th Dr era will be remembered fondly apart from a select few 7. I've never seen Dalek Master Plan so I can't comment.

My favourite era of the programme. Not overrated at all. This was the true Golden Age of the series... which, in my view, lasted between roughly 1966 and 1976. Give or take a year. It went downhill from about 1980 onward and currently is at its absolute deepest depths in terms of awfulness. Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts produced some of the best Doctor Who of all. The golden days are over and, sadly, they'll never return.

I find the Adric thing funny because I read a lot about Classic Who and watched a lot of videos before I actually decided to start watching it, and based off what some people had said I expected Adric to be the worst guy in the world and he'd be annoying I'd find the stories with him in impossible to sit through. A lot of the earlier Who is way better looking because it's in black and white! It covers up a lot of poor special effects due to the BBC budget. I actually did not mind Clara when she was with Matt but she dropped a lot after he left. The reason I think Rose is worse is because they changed Doctor Who into a romance which was a terrible idea! It also kind of ruined a lot of Martha's brief run, and I liked Martha.

Yep, Dr Who is the wrong show for a romance considering the relationship between companion and Doctor up until that point had always been of a platonic nature and a romance changes the relationship dynamic between the two main characters as well as it's literally the Doctor picking a favorite. I just think the doctor should treat all his companions equally and let the audience decide who is their favorite. Plus I've never seen what a romance brings to a sci fi show

Clara is great! (From Series 8 onwards, at least...) She's a deeply flawed character and that's what makes her so interesting as a companion. She is witty and clever enough to keep pace with the Doctor and she learns fast, but she also has an arrogant, controlling side that puts her at odds with the Doctor (and basically any other authority figure she comes across) and this is a really interesting dynamic for a companion. Rarely have we had companions that are deeply flawed people, and Clara is a perfect illustration of how the Doctor-companion dynamic can be tested to its absolute limit with a companion. I think a lot of people take issue with Clara because it seems unrealistic that a human could learn so much about the universe to be an intellectual equal to the Doctor, Moffat did love that trope - it worked better with River Song, because she was half-Time Lord. I sometimes wish Clara had been an alien, say a Trakenite or even a Gallifreyan, then maybe people wouldn't have been as bothered by her personality. While she had basically no character in Series 7B, both her and the Twelfth Doctor emerge from the TARDIS in Deep Breath and hit the ground running with a great dynamic involving two strong-willed, independent and brilliant minds trying to work together despite their chaotic, dangerous relationship. It's gripping stuff, and it's a big part of what makes the Twelfth Doctor's era so brilliant!

I still don't see what everyone is seeing in Inferno. I think its quite a hokey and cheesy "what if Nazis won WW2!?" style of parallel universe which had already been done in media even in 1970, it has some of most unnecessary monsters in the history of the show and while its great seeing the cast have fun with their other roles it is an extremely padded and ridiculously bloated runtime. It is 3 or 4 episodes (at best) worth of content that has been strained to 7 parts by a gimmick. If it wasn't for the great location filming and sound design I'd say it was one of the most forgettable stories in 3s era and it is easily my least favourite in season 7. I just don't get it, is everyone just so in love with the concept that they're able to look past its flaws? I feel so out of step with fan consensus with this one but I stick by it.

-Missy is the best Master -Putting doctors before the First Doctor isn't inherently bad, it's just like Chibnall went through all of the things that would make it bad and added them to The Timeless Children (A mystery that leads you to the wrong conclusions if you think about it, only for it to explain the ""correct"" answer later even though it doesn't fit the evidence. Would it really have been that hard to not make the tardis a police box, for example?) -Nightmare in Silver is an okay episode but the new Cyberman lore deserves to be explored further -While Earthshock is a better story, Attack of the Cybermen is a better cyberman story. Why is it the only 80s Cyberman story that actually remembers they can convert people? -Daleks were overused even in the RTD era -Krynoids should come back with the use of modern CGI -The Master should've stayed dead for at least 5 series after The Doctor Falls, with a full story to explain why they're evil again -The Lone Cyberman trying to make all cybermen entirely robotic deserves to be explored more. We've had a Dalek civil war, why not have a cyberman civil war? We've seen some cybermen that are mainly motivated by the desire to 'upgrade' themselves and others and we've seen some that are motivated only by their will to survive. Most of the time these motivations are compatible but I think they'd have a disagreement when it comes to discarding their brains since that's essentially what makes them alive.

When it comes to "Canon" the best way of looking at it is that all expanded media is canon and contradictions are the results of history being changed. With or without the Books or audios there are alot of plot holes so a I enjoy stories without having it placed on a nonexistent timeline. And for things you don't enjoy chances are they'll be forgotten and contradicted eventually so it's not worth the energy saying it's "ruined the show".

I don't think Doctor Who should be limited by it, since there are already so many limitations being placed on it all ready, like budget and BBC Mandates. For example, I know a lot of people don't like the idea of big finish doing stories with 5 and Peri, however that doesn't stop those stories (most of them) from being enjoyable. It doesn't matter if Derek Jacobi's Master meets the 8th Doctor, they work well off each other and Big Finish again shouldn't be limited by Russell's poor decision.

While I appreciate the humor and charisma of Jon Pertwee, I can't help but miss the time-travel element that makes Doctor Who so unique. The Earth-bound stories and the emphasis on UNIT did get a bit repetitive for me too. It's like the Doctor traded in the whole universe for a swanky car! Cutting costs on the wardrobe department - seems surprising how much impact a budget constraint can have on the storytelling. Personally, I miss the TARDIS being the Doctor's main mode of transportation. The whole ensemble dynamic of TARDIS teams brought a special charm to the show that I find myself longing for in which the 60s who did so well. I did love Roger Delgado's Master, though. He brought such a cool and sinister vibe to the series.

I'm not sure about which one of the two sides you talk about, I think it might be SJWs but far-right people tend to overuse "woke" as soon as they see a character who isn't a white straight man, both sides suck. If you only say a few good things about Chibnall era you're immediatly called a SJW but on the other hand I don't agree with people who only want female Doctors and want Thasmin to be canon for the sake of having a lesbian Doctor ( and no, only Yaz's feelings are confirmed so it's only one-sided for the moment) the same as I don't agree with those who only want male Doctors ( even though I can understand their opinion as they have been used to a male character for a long time, but seriously the Doctor's gender doesn't matter as long as they are played by a good actor/actress. Plus it's not like the show didn't prepare us for this since Matt Smith era, Moffat gave us an amazing female Master and the Doctor's DNA changes completely with regeneration, why Y chromosomes couldn't turn into X chromosomes ?) Anyway when you see how many RU-vid Channels are purely dedicated to hating on the current era and how the hate comments Doctor Who gets on social media I don't think being an anti-SJW is an unpopular opinion. I'd say the most unpopular opinion on this era is being moderate, I just think Chibnall is meh. I enjoyed some episodes of series 12, New Year specials and Flux but I still prefer RTD and Moffat. I still didn't think Chibnall is as horrible as people say.

@@jujublue4426 I don't disagree that a woman could play the Doctor convincingly or that Michelle Gomez played an interesting female Master, however I do disagree that it should be done as it ignores the fact that Timelord regeneration for decades has been that of regenerating into only one sex. The sex swap lore ignores years and years of continuity, and the only way to make it make any sense is something like the highly unpopular "Timeless Children" and while technically it's not impossible that an alien race that could regenerate into other versions of themselves could regenerate into the opposite sex, it is highly unlikely that this is how regeneration has always been and the first we saw of it was with Missy. It's far more likely the writers decided to retcon how regeneration works. I feel at this stage it's too late to introduce a sex swap lore. Even though a lot of people who have stopped watching due to the Chibnall/Whittaker era in theory are not against a female Doctor but personally I don't see my position of thinking a character that has always been male for over 50 years should remain male as very extreme, but that hasn't stopped certain people labelling me a bigot and a sexist etc etc. aka "when the Sword of The Righteous Woke are angered" Not only the far right use the term woke and when RU-vid channels criticising current Doctor Who are very popular, they may have a point.

Not sure if this works as a series, as it's just a rapid fire Q+A and people whining about Jodie's run. Couple hot takes were interesting, but maybe tinker with the format. my hot takes: Every Doctor 's era would be improved if they had K-9 for a companion. The sontarions won the war with the Rutans, as we haven't seen or mentioned a Rutan in decades. Jodie's Doctor should regenerate into the Ruth Doctor. I know it probably messes up what we laughingly call DW continuity, but I really like that actress and that outfit and she deserves a series. or The next Doctor needs to be a woman. There needs to be a 'Troughton' to see if the idea works, just like the guys got.

I've been waiting for a video like this. Here's a few of my controversial opinions Genesis of the Daleks is overrated - an episode too long in my opinion. Paradise Towers is not that bad - if you've read High-Rise, look at the plot and don't focus too much on Richard Brier's extremely hammy performance, then it's not that bad. Sutekh should not come back to the series. I don't like the new design of the Ice Warriors. To me, they look like a person put on a ski mask and tucked their neck and chin into green jumpers. Sarah-Jane should not have been introduced in Jon Pertwee's era - she should have joined in Robot - Elisabeth Sladen and Jon Pertwee have very little chemistry between them - Jon is clearly still mourning Katy Manning's departure. I like most of the historical episodes - The Romans and The Aztecs rank in my top 20 stories. 2 companions is the maximum that the Doctor should have.

Pertwee does have a few average stories, but his dalek ones are great. That's exactly why I love Delgardo and Ainley they were very simple evil moustache twirling characters, instead of the obsession in New Who with taking a psychological look at why the character is so damaged to try to figure out why he's so evil I don't need to know why he's evil he just is, I actually think this layered approach takes away from what the character was originally meant to be and possibly why I can't relate to any New Who Master as the same character. I doubt my take is very popular but is interesting that it's the direct opposite to yours on the Master character.

My controversial opinions: 1. Yeah, I agree with Genesis of the Daleks being too long. There are a few moments which are obviously just padding and a waste of time, and I don't think it builds atmosphere as well as some people say. 2. 13's era is underrated. There are some truly standout stories, the companions (generally) are quite good and have a lot of depth, and Yaz is arguably one of my favourite companions of the modern run. 3. The Weeping Angels aren't that scary. Yeah, they're good monsters, but the only time they've been scary is in the Edge of Time when they're literally right in front of you in VR. 4. I don't know if this is particularly controversial, but The Faceless Ones is boring. In each episode, I had to struggle to stay awake. 5. Series 9 is one of the worst series of the show. Aside from, like three episodes, it's boring or bland or downright dumb, totally wasting Capaldi, Coleman, Gomez, Bleach and Gallifrey.
