Spearhead From Space is my no. 1 as well. It's the first Doctor Who story I can distinctly remember. I was 6 when it was first transmitted in 1970 and I can remember that shortly after watching it, I was standing outside C&A's in Stockport, crying my eyes out because I was terrified that the dummies in the shop window would crash through the glass and shoot me.

Clara's initial rejection of the 12th Doctor in Deep Breath never set right with me. We had just come out of the 50th where Clara had interacted with two other incarnations of the Doctor as well as the setup to that episode The Name of the Doctor, where she entered his timestream and had encountered all of his incarnations ( @ least up to that point thank you very much Chris Chibnel), and yet she has a problem with the fact that he's got gray hair and lines on his face.... And wanted him to change back? Just wasn't well written by Moffitt.
@TheMarioAdams
@TheMarioAdams 3 года назад
Yeah but you can acknowledge someone used to be someone else before you met them but when they change from the person you met them as; it can be a lot harder to deal with. Clara knew the Doctor changed faces but he had never done that with her and she had never had to witness her friend's personality change drastically when she didn't want it to. It doesn't matter if she knew he did it before because it wasn't personal to her then.
@candoentertainment9118
@candoentertainment9118 3 года назад
@@TheMarioAdams I get your point, it just personally never set well with me and I think Vastra calling her out on it was a highlight of the episode for me. Rose was upset when 9 regenerated but she didn't out and out reject 10. Hell even Adric, Tegan & Nyssa handled 4 regenerating into 5 better and they were all more or less brand new companions. Clara had more insight into regeneration than any previous companion except for Romana. It's my opinion but to me it never really worked how she behaved.
@bananasaregood8655
@bananasaregood8655 3 года назад
And clara pleaded to the timelords to help the doctor and save him from actually dying! He said he couldnt regenerate anymore and this was it, time to die and she was so upset, then the timelords giv him a new set of regenerations (happy days) and clara is all ‘i dont know who you are anymore’ and wants to leave him??

Also the fact just to baby the audience and Clara they got the 11th doctor to call Clara like that was the most pointless scenes Clara and the audience know about regeneration and we can move on we didn’t need to be patronised by that scene

I wonder how many people posting on here have actually seen "The Power of the Daleks"? Not the animation or a reconstruction, but the actual episodes. The ratings for its one and only UK transmission were between 7.5 - 8 million viewers per episode. Given that a fair proportion of those viewers would have been children at the time (as I was), there are probably several million people still alive who saw it. I was lucky enough to see this story no less than THREE times: the original BBC transmission, then a further two times after my family emigrated to Australia in 1967. So I remember the story quite well...let's hope that somewhere, somehow, some if not all of the episodes have survived, and may be found one day...

Robot will always be special to me because it was the very first Doctor Who story I ever saw. It’s like comfort food for me. I also love how Tom just gets the part perfectly right away. There are some actors who play the Doctor who kinda know what they’re doing but maybe a few stories/episodes later they find their version of the Doctor. Tom from the get go is a bonkers alien who will be playful one moment then switches to very serious in a split second. I do admit I do tend to fast forward a few scenes (like the asshat think tank people) and there are some bits that are laughable because they’re so bad (“Noooooooo I killed the one who created me!”) but for me it’s underrated.

Spearhead from Space would have to be my pick. It perfectly gets Jons era off to a solid start, feels like a Pertwee story and feels like his era, and remains such an iconic adventure even now. I also have a soft spot for Robot, due to Tom, Elisabeth and Michaels performance and an enjoyable story.

Why do we love lists so much? I don't know, but it never gets boring. Anywho (sorry), here's my top 3: 1. Spearhead from Space (one of the first VHS releases I bought and a fine story which still stands up today) 2. Power of the Daleks (sacrilege that Troughton's first story was junked) 3. The Eleventh Hour (never dull, clever way to bring in a new companion and a great start to Matt Smith's Doctor - basically, run! Brilliant.)
@dudstep
@dudstep 3 года назад
The worst thing about the junking was that even though they wiped the original tapes, they had copies of all the episodes on film (except Feast Of Steven, I think) but just threw them all in a skip. Luckily some were salvaged, but it's just mad to think someone would just take cannisters of film and just throw them out.

I'm glad you put Time and the Rani before The Twin Dilemma, I don't like either of them (Although I'm by no means a fan of most of Classic Who), but I believe that The Twin Dilemma is very marginally better. I believe that Castrovalva is better than The Woman who Fell to Earth. Though the episode is arguably worse, Davison really sold it for me. Whittaker doesn't really do anything to show she's in trauma, unlike Tennant, Smith and Capaldi.

Nearing the end of Smith's run in a New Who rewatch currently. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel as though a decent amount of Eleven's run rides on the coattails of "The Eleventh Hour." It feels natural in Series 5 because it's all part of a character arc. But once we dip into Series 6, and we're still referencing fish fingers and custard and bringing up the image of Amelia waiting for her Raggedy Doctor, I can't help but feel like they're going for a little bit of emotional manipulation. Many of these later references feel less like meaningful motifs and more like Moffat going, "hey, remember how good The Eleventh Hour was? Well, we're mentioning it again, so this episode must be good too, right?" I just feel like at some point we need to move the characters beyond that arc and give them new stories to define their relationships and development.
@BH-98
@BH-98 3 года назад
I agree with you I remember at the time being annoyed anytime they brought up stuff like that to get an emotional response to it. Stories do have their running gags & themes throughout their duration but the “pond era” of the show they did it so often that it got annoying. Fish fingers & custard was a funny quirky moment in the eleventh hour, bringing it up multiple times afterwards to make us feel emotional/nostalgic kinda ruined it.

Agreed. Season 24 is without question the worst ever in classic Who

not just the worst in Classic Who but I'd argue worst in all of Doctor Who. It made the show look like a laughing stock - thankfully McCoy's last 2 seasons were MUCH better and some of my favourites in the entire show!

I'd put Castrovalva and Rose higher up. Rose was a great re-introduction to the show, better than the TV movie as it's better to be from Rose's POV than from the Doctor's. The whole Logopolis-Castrovalva regeneration was to me the best ever. Took 4 episodes for the Doctor to be himself again. Spearhead is a great story even without the regeneration. Robot is saved by Baker's performance. Hard to judge Power of the Daleks. The Eleventh Hour is probably the best New Who 1st.

Only changes I would make for my own would be Woman Who Fell to Earth being last (partly for all the reasons stated here and party for being, although by no means the worst of the Chibnall era, its the first and starts the bastardization of the show but even worse it got my hopes up with a dark sense of atmosphere and somewhat interesting monster design) and moving Castrovalva up; although its by no means as good as Spearhead or Eleventh Hour, it is my favourite (biased as Davison is fav Doctor admittedly) as it does what it needs to do: introduce the 5th Doctor as both a good character but also as a different one from the recently departed Tom Baker - no minor task. The companions also get some good stuff as although Nyssa and Tegan are only on their 3rd and 2nd story respectively, they have to take centre stage and battle the Master, deal with a regenerating Doctor, stop the TARDIS being destroyed in the big bang and solve the puzzle of Castrovalva with the Doctor. Also like Adric being captured by the Master so he still has involvement in the story unlike a lot of season 19 where companions often end up serving next to no purpose. I like lots of other stuff in here too including the music, location work and the introspective theme of a broken identity with the disjointed town of Castrovalva reflecting that of the Doctor's own fragmented mind as he struggles to remember his identity. By the end this identity arc is resolved as he remembers who he is but with a new persona (distancing the Tom Baker one totally and successfully) and I feel he sells it to the audience that he's the Doctor. That's what a post-regeneration story needs to do and I feel it does this even if the story itself around this is dull to some. Also love the Escher design and Castrovalvans wearing bins on their heads! :)

The woman who fell to earth is far from one of the worst opening stories.
@dexterhill5843
@dexterhill5843 3 года назад
@@nathanielfarkas746 For me personally it is and its the one I'd least want to revisit. However sure objectively it may not be the worst but for me there's not much in it between both Twin Dilemma and Time and the Rani with it. It had a decent premise but it lets itself down by being a Chibnall script with classic tropes such as exposition dumps, arbitrary countdowns (unsatisfactorily resolves off screen I might add) and too many characters running around who have nothing to do with the plot. It chokes itself by introducing too much at once and as usual he can't pay half of it off at all and nothing and no one feels like they get time to breath or develop. It also feels as unoriginal as a knock off mars bar from Aldi in some places as it borrows elements from 11th hour and other stories such as the Doctor being quirky & passing out and usual post-reg cringey dialogue. Now this in itself is fine but disappointing for the first total new start in 8 years and a series that presented and marketed itself as being so new and radical. It just felt like a re hash in many ways. However its probably the only Chibnall script I even come close to liking from his era and of course I won't try and stop people from liking it. I said Castrovalva is my fav and I doubt many will agree with me as its not the best and I know that but can still enjoy it.

"first and starts the bastardization of the show" what's this even supposed to mean.
@dexterhill5843
@dexterhill5843 2 года назад
@@friendlyotaku9525 'although by no means the worst [episode] of the Chibnall era, its the first'. My bad for omitting 'episode' from the previous clause but my meaning was that because its the first episode of the era and therefore sets up elements that have contributed to Doctor Who's current state, it is the beginning of the show's downfall. Similarly, if you talk about the show's cancellation in 1989 you can trace it back to and therefore kinda have to mention The Leisure Hive in 1980 to provide context of where the problems originated. My point was that on first viewing I actually didn't dislike it. It wasn't perfect but it did the job it needed to but then everything that came after has been fairly to abysmally shit and now the show is in a worse state than in 1989. Therefore although on first viewing I thought it was alright, with hindsight it has to take some of the flack for the era by default due to it being the catalyst for it.
@friendlyotaku9525
@friendlyotaku9525 2 года назад
@@dexterhill5843 "the show is in a worse state than 1989" this is objectively wrong because in 1989... the show was literally axed whereas in 2022 it isn't even close to that and has a brighter future than ever. But at the end of the day this supposed downfall is your opinion and that's fine but... yeah.
