Personally,I think that a real "poser" is someone who only pretends to like a certain genre of music (Metal,Punk, etc.) in order to seem "cool" to other people or to impress certain people. They don't REALLY like or listen to that style of music, they only pretend that they do. They usually don't know much of anything about it either. If you TRULY love a genre of music (especially Metal) and faithfully listen to it,you're not a poser! Also, what CountBlagorath said about wearing shirts or hats of bands that you don't TRULY like just to seem cool- It's things like THAT that make someone a TRUE poser! I agree 100% with his statement about that. That's just how I feel about the subject.
I thought that the term "poser" was someone who acted like they listened to metal but didn't... Like someone who heard Enter Sandman once on the radio and called themselves a metalhead.
Some ppl see it as you listen to mainstream bands like iron maiden Metallica etc but if you like bands that aren't well known like overkill and Kreator and you're a true metalhead. For Sean (or shaun) he makes the valid point- you don't have to just like metal to be a metalhead. If you enjoy it, you're a metalhead.
EXACTLY Count Blagorath!! Metalheads don't realize that most of their favorite bands listen to other music genres. Nergal of Behemoth has a side project called Me and That Man, and it's not metal, and just like him there are many other band members of metal(including Black Metal.....YES...BLACK METAL) who likes other kinds of music. So of course there's no such thing as a "True Metalhead, or Uber Metalhead, or Super Metalhead". Thank you.
Ok, 6 years too late, but I came looking for this because a new guy I know from work puts stickers from his band all over the place, short sleeves so you definitely see his Metallica tattoo, and goes in dismissal every time I try to let go hear a band with core influences. Calls people posers and hipsters, and is just being a complete ass. Nevertheless I started to doubt myself. I started listening to metal when I was 10 through friends of my parents his kid. I started to explore different music and stopped dressing “metal” later on too. I listen to everything I like, from folk, jazz, blues, fusion, rock, psychedelic music, ambient, goa, hiphop, experimental, etc, just everyone like. Now he kinda confronted me with my past “true metal” identity, and made me question if I was indeed a poser, because I try a little too hard to convince him to give certain bands a chance, like Frontierer, Carbomb, Sectioned etc, but he dismissed it just because it had core influences... Now I just think, “fuck him”, but it’s still so annoying when someone judges you without knowing you and being so damn elitist.
Some people call me a poser cause I'm straight edge a gamer and a big wrestling fan and wear shirts and even listen to some alternative old school rock or classic rock punk rock and some grunge and wear t shirts related to that and then they see me wearing a metal band shirt and start calling me a poser cause I could care less which in my opinion that's what a poser is just cause I won't wear a metal band shirt all the time doesn't mean I'm not a metal head
I love bands like Burzum,Emperor,Immortal,Ensiferum,Marduk,TYR,The Faceless,Nile (South Carolina,Fuck Yeah!!),Iron Maiden,Goatwhore,Vader,Nightwish,Kittie and Whitechapel. Hate me now,Fuckers!!
You're awesome dude. I can't even list all of the different bands across all sub genres let alone classical, a little rap, a little jazz... the list goes on. But yeah the beauty of music is that it represents you and whatever that may be is awesome. Too many people are afraid to be what they are for fear of being outcast... or even worse, they want to be part of "the cool kids at school." I'm not even ashamed to rock a Mitch Lucker shirt even if there's probably a 12 year old girl wearing the same one. Kids, trying to cast people into groups that are "inferior" to one's own isn't cool! Just be yourself! Count Blagorath you're doing good stuff man have a lot of videos trying to break some of these bad stereotypes and trends going around. Keep doing your thing man people grow and learn from this kind of stuff.
Personally, I dont like the new stuff. But yes it is metal. The people can like what they like and as long as theyre not being assholes about their stuff then Im fine with it. I enjoy more 80s style metal over all but I also like classic rock, and even some dubstep.
Geez, okay. The topic of poser,. I know I'm 8 years late to this game on this video, but I wanted to watch it and see where it went. Ok, back when I was in high school 1989 to be exact, we had headbanges there and they were kind of 'elitist" and they were calling "new jacks" to the metal scene posers, say someone who was like nerdy the year before and then new semester starts and they come to school wearing whatever band shirt, etc and we would called a poser. I'm speaking from personal experience and I personally didn't think much of it. i discovered this music through hanging with friends that listened to heavy metal and i got turned on to it and started recording their records and tapes, etc. Started buying my own records, magazines and getting more and more into it, kind of doing my home work, so to speak. But , those same headbangers that rag on us new jacks ended up in a year or two later became preppies and guidos. So to me, THAT is my definition of being a poser is. I'm almost 47 now and even I don't listen to much metal these days, I got more into NYHC and OI, among other music as time went on, I remained true to my beliefs and myself and never sold out. in my opinion, posers are the ones that didn't remain true to the music and went on to whatever was in vogue at those times. I'm not going to call a fan of Glam metal a poser because, if that's what they're into and are true to themselves about it, more power to them!! That's basically my stance on this topic which is a bit redundant in 2020.
when i was 6 i remember listening to the music that my brother listened trough the door: blink 182, deftones, john mayer and incubus. actually the reason i started liking music and even play it is because i heard a song by incubus called "wish you were here". Nowadays i still listen to those bands as well as metallica, slayer, motorhead, pantera, etc.do you think it's "wrong" for a metalhead to listen to things like some of the tings i said or others things like jazz, prog, alternative and blues?
Could not fucking agree more, I love all the extreme sub genres (especially doom) and have been called not true or a 'conformist' for having short hair and joining the army. Ridiculous.
Hey count, good vids. Keep em up. Quick question.. are you gonna do a vid review of the new Rivers of Nihil? I'd like to hear what you think of it. Cheers!
I have a very broad spectrum. From green day to metallica, from radiohead to lamb of god, from deftones to behemoth. Listen to what is pleasing to you, because it's your decision. Fantastic video!
Man, I've just seen yours video about being ashamed of being metalhead. That was great and very true. I don't only listen to metal, but I love metal, my love is so pure and I know that. And I love folk too. I hope you will continue those reviews. Sorry for my English, still learning. You are in my subscribed list. Metal for life!
Great video. Instantely liked & fav'ed after I saw it. I'm seeing a lot of hate (especially on the internet) these days as well and it makes me kind of sad. These video's are a good reminder that there are still some sane people in the scene :) Another point that bothers me is the fact that I see a lot of people my age (mid-twenties) looking down on kids in their teens who join the scene. It's like they don't remember what it's like to be 14, new to metal and probably a social outcast.
Good video, I agree with your opinion, if only more metalheads were open minded like this... Anyway, what do you think about people, who consider themselves metalheads, but they know only like 2 or 3 metal bands? And also I'd like to know how much do you think you have to know the band to wear their shirt without beeing a poser? Do you have to know perfectly whole discography with dates and member changes, or it's enough to like let's say 3 albums?
You are helping to give me the confidence to call myself a metalhead! I'm not quite there yet (I'm a girl just getting into metal less than 2 years ago, grew up super Christian and still love many other genres of music) but hopefully soon I will be!
Thanks man. I just checked them out and they are great! Also, I'm subscribing to you. This video is so true. These so called "metalheads" need to get over the fact that people like different bands/genres than they do and stop acting like they're better than others.
Metalheads who hate on metalheads who don't dress like stereotypical metalheads. I've never dressed like one in 32 years of being alive, I preferred the scene attire with no irony.
Let me Tell you an example: i'm 43 years old and from germany. I spent my whole life listening to electronic music, so i really grew up in this so called techno scene of the 90s. I was more than a true techno head, knowing everything about this music. But suddenly, just a bit more than a year ago i discovered Iron Maiden. I heared the Trooper and i was really impressed. I loved it so much! After that i spent month and month with listening to all theyr albums, one by one. And it's hard to believe: my emotional reactions to Iron Maiden were that intense, i cried so much because i felt happyness and energy like never before. I really started to Love this band deeply. Over one year i experienced many moments of crying and something Like a mental healing by listening to them. Of course i started to wear T-Shirts and other Merch, but would any other "real" Metal head Spot me as a poser, because i wear very short hair and sneaker? Ask me for all theyr albums in the right order, i'll tell you! Also 5 Songs of every Album, i'll tell you! I'm also interested to listen to many other Metal stuff. I really Love children of bodom, but i'm looking Like a poser in theyr eyes. What makes me to a real metal head now? Isn't it the most important thing what you feel and know about this music? "Nothing is real until you feel!" - Iron Maiden - Ghost of the Navigator (2000)
I agree. The metal community should unite in all it's forms. Just because one's sub-genre of metal is not another should not separate us as a metal family.
By the way dude, I met you at the Immolation show in Rochester and I remember you and my friend talking about different kinds of music that you two liked. Hope to see you again.
Not sure if you have done a video on this topic. But I would love to hear what you think on Moshers and Hardcore dancers. Even better if you talked about the normal Dancers and the violent dancers. (You most likely know the difference but just in case. Normal Dancers watch out for others, and violent dancers purposely hit people) Thanks for another great video. Keep it metal
Funny I've seen this video a lot but recently I've listened to some rap and I felt like this would help me bc I felt like I'm less of a metalhead for it. I have a battle vest and everything.
Oh man, you changed my mind so fucking bad. I listen to many other music genres and I always thought I wasn't a "real" metalhead just because I'm not into metal all the time even if I like it. So I'm valid, my day is made !
It's like meeting people who prefer Renaissance art over Modern Abstract art (the respect is kept and it's understood that Renaissance art is a true artform in itself, but it's also understood that MA art is understood at looking at the heart of the visual art form)
I hear you man! I also hate it when people say that core bands aren't metal or when they hate a band that has a core label without even listening to it, cause I know plenty of people like that.
Hi, what do you think about Japanese metal? Because i really enjoy listening to bands like "maximum the hormone", if you don't know who they are try to listen to something about them, they aren't that bad...
I feel it's your duty as an older metal head to help out anybody that new to metal that might have just one our two bands that they know of you should help them out play them some music from your metal collection help metal to grow not turn anybody away when I was new to metal I had some older metal heads show me some bands and it was awesome they didn't make me feel stupid or I didn't belong because I didn't know a bunch of bands at the time
I remember my ex used to wear my Bathory shirt all the time and I remember her friend wore it one time and I thought she might like them and she had no idea what I was talking about
I tend to view people who like the smoother and melodic side of metal not as deep into metal as people who can appreciate things like Last Days of Humanity, Cryptopsy, Sarcofago, Krisiun, etc. I don't, however, feel rejection towards people with lighter tastes- but to meet people who understand the darker side of a dark genre kind of gives a feeling of solidarity and a shared moment of looking at the heart of an art form with someone.
I absolutely agree with you. I love bands some of the heavier metal bands out there, but I also listen to other genres including blues rock, punk, and alternative metal. I have never believed this made me any less of a metal head for the exact reason you mentioned in your video: I still listened to metal.
If you listen to metal music only you are a truel metalhead. If you listen to other sorts of stuff, you are a true musichead. You choose wether you will be more narrowminded or more open to other experiences. Let's evolve.
