I think metalheads spotting other metalheads is like the equivalent of two dogs meeting each other and going " you are dog? I am dog to!"

I've been a metalhead for 22 years and none of my closest friends are metalheads. Friendship is a lot more complex than just sharing a common taste in music.
@MoonOvIce
@MoonOvIce 2 года назад
If you downplay a taste in music as "just music" then yes. But we all know it's much deeper than that, it's emotions, thinking, intelligence even very often, among other things. All friends I made through music, I have A LOT more in common with them than just music, but music was the catalyst. Pretty much everyone else I've met in life that doesn't share my taste in music, let's just say the relationships are just not as important or "deep" so to speak.

@@MoonOvIce I didn't downplay music at all. I said that "friendship is a lot more complex than just sharing a common taste in music", I didn't say "just music" :) And what I meant by that is music by itself can't be the only common denominator in a friendship. Can music be a beginning of a friendship? Of course. I just shared my own experience. With that being said I'm happy that you've made friends through music :)

In my opinion what's really matter it's that your friends accept you and like you the way you are, that speaks very well about them. My friends in the last 15+ years are the same everyone respect each other's way of life. My old Metalhead friends from my old neighborhood were totally the opposite.

True fact: We are Metalheads and listen to the same music but that doesn't mean we have the same opinions, the same life views, the same life goals, the same whatever. Humans are strange creatures so we have to learn to get along well with each other.

Something that sucks with "non-metal" friends is that when you're drinking or having a party you listen to their music the whole time (don't get me wrong, i listen and enjoy all kinds of music). But i would much rather blast some metal while drinking or hanging out, and its not possible if your friends are not into it. You can do other fun stuff with metal friends, but you can't listen to metal with non-metal friends

The best advice I’d give is do it naturally don’t force it, I was at college in my battle jacket a few years back and some other metalhead approaches me speaking about my jacket, the next day he brought his to college and we started listening to metal and eating chicken and drinking beers we became brothers ever since even to this day. Also along the way we ran into another guy getting into heavy metal and he eventually started a jacket and started hanging with us then from there we met another metalhead that we go with to gigs, we’re all from separate towns and meet up whenever we’re all free too. I never tried to make a friend group full of metalheads but over time it built up naturally and I’d recommend everyone doing it this way! Also remember being the lone wolf sometimes is just as badass 🤘🏻

34 years of being a metal head and no slowing down, it's a personal thing that I don't push on others. So, I have a mix of friends from all walks of life, ethnicities, sexual orientation, and they all like diverse types of music. That being said. I think there's an underlying link when you meet someone else that's into metal, an unspoken acknowledgement that you get it, that you understand it, and that you love it.

This is something I've been thinking about a lot in terms of dating. I like to have some common ground musically with people, but I don't like placing a lot of emphasis on it. The most I really want as far as music taste goes is just someone I can maintain a conversation with about the stuff and isn't the kind to be dismissive of that music I'm into because it's either unconventional, underground, or older.

I've been a metalhead for 13 years, and I've met many other metalheads that are douche bags.. they'll see my battle vest, and patches, or I'll be wearing a Archspire, Mastodon shirt etc.. and they'll see it, and they'll be wearing a Cryptopsy shirt or something, and they'll still ignore or pass by me. So I guess it was meant for me to be a metalhead to myself.. normies don't like me, and people who share the same thing don't like me.. I love talking about many things. Nature, mythology, science, history, Pokemon (I've been a Pokemon fan for 19 years), Horror, Cemeteries etc... Metal is my life, and helps me function.

@@woetroe4573 If you are looking for good ear plugs for music, I would recommend ear plugs specifically made for music... Not sure what earplugs you wear for riding a motorcycle but if they are throwaway, I would look for something else. I have music earplugs from Crescendo (bought a few years ago in Het Sportpaleis, Antwerp, just before Apocalyptica and Sabaton) and I believe I bought regular ones (you have regular for 20 euro and pro for 50 euro), though I'm not sure what size. Anyway, they are silicone earbuds, fit rather perfectly and the sound filter does an amazing job: the sound with them is incredible, background noise is mostly filtered out, the sound is clearer (less busy), my ears are protected and when the music isn't playing, I can have a conversation. No cord though but they don't fall out, no matter how abusive I treat my neck, so not that much of an issue. And in general, don't skim on ear protection, it isn't something you want to lose. I live in the Sacramento area and almost every metalhead and punks that I see at shows come off as pretty distant. Especially the girls. When the bands aren't playing they either zone out with their phones or huddle in tiny groups and drink heavily. It's pretty rough being newly sober at 41 at shows and trying to strike up a convo with a cutie and being silently judged for not slamming shots. Not only that, my only two friends are headcases. One had a drug induced meltdown and disappeared into the forest. And the other is an awkward idiot that gets very nervous around the ladies. Lol damn.

Right on man! Could you imagine in a alternate universe there’s a metal language where people just say names of bands. Asking where to stop for lunch: “Gwar Septicflesh Mayhem, Tsjuder Kreator?” Dimmu Borgir Amon Amarth” I am fortunate enough to have a few full on metal heads and out bond continues to stay strong but what’s funny is my full on metal friends introduce me to their friends and they are like the ones you mentioned, bunch of stoner jerk offs with nothing in their future, so i just avoid them. Even my best friend since the third grade (we’re both in our early 20’s) I’ve introduced him to some of my music and that grew our bond stronger. Also, wanted to mention about the friends we make from meeting at shows, I’m still in touch with a couple but the majority I made were only temporary at the show and we never really got each other’s contacts. Just that short epic time of meeting someone new, hanging out for a bit can be really appreciated since that’ll probably be the last time you ever see them again. But it’s a cycle that happens over and over again. Stay awesome everyone!

I tried my best to promote some Metal to my close friends along the years and it just never worked. Most people prefer what’s familiar to them and rarely ever expand from that. The adoption curve explains this pretty well. Most people just aren’t innovators and early adopters when it comes to music and that’s ok. When I was in my early teens (which somehow feels like a lifetime ago, despite not being THAT old), I always wanted metalhead friends as I just found it better to have more relateable friends in general. But over time I became dissatisfied with this decision as it often narrowed things too much in the relationship, and not to mention differences in terms of preferences as well. Then, I also became dissatisfied with the fact that more pleasant metalheads ended up becoming a rarity for me, regardless of whether real life or online, practically the more extreme the music, the more elitistic the fans. The elitism alone pretty much killed the "scene" and metalheads in general for me, nowadays not only that I don't have such friends anymore, but I also hardly find it desirable to look for such people again, after realizing I was also slowly becoming what I dreaded. It simply became too much of a headache, and there's far too much division, fragmentation, and even outright pettiness going on, killing the passion in the process. Presently, I just stick to the music (look out for bands and labels I like and get the albums, that sort of thing), and virtually ignore everything else. Going beyond that just isn't worth it in my book anymore.

I search for friends mostly in metalheads, goths, punks, and even emos. It’s generally easier for me to get along with these types of people for me because of our common interests. That being said, if someone isn’t any of those things, it’s completely fine as long as they’re fun to hang out with. Some of my friends right now decided to shit on me for my taste in music, and they seem genuinely mad that I’m into metal. That to me is definitely grounds to stop being friends with somebody when it comes to not liking the same music.

Honestly, I don't care if my friends like metal or not. Although I try to look for at least one metal head friend, but that's very hard. I have a strong friendship with my friend that like she can bully my music and she lets me bully hers because we're that type of friends.

I used to try and priotize metal friends but as I got older it definitely made sense to not make our music tastes the main priority. I love my current friends, but I still listen to my music and rock some killer band shirts because they love me for being myself :)

This video really hits home because I thought that being friends with people who dressed and listened to the same music as me would be great in middle school, however, they weren't really doing anything productive with their lives and were kind of depressing to hang around with. I regretted leaving my old friend group almost immediately and was grateful when they accepted me back with open arms. As someone who is a 4.0 student and loves cracking jokes, I wasn't able to find goths like me who actually cared about getting an education until high school and college. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that "normal" people can be just as badass and cool to hang with too. :)
@MoonOvIce
@MoonOvIce 2 года назад
You can care about education and not care about the system that much, not everything is black and white. In my teens I read A LOT but after highschool didn't want anything to do with formal education, taught myself programming and worked on that for about 7 years before deciding to actually make it official and go back to school, out of necessity mostly. I still read a lot of philosphy and other subjects, but met so many my age that had an "education" and their minds are basically stuck, never read anything either because school sucked the life out of them. It all depends on how people cope with things.

I've seen a few very beautiful girls who obviously like death metal come into my store. But they vanish. I've met some old metalheads but they vanish too. I really wanna find some people I can actually be around and have a good time (of course them be good people)

In my experience other metalheads are usually not the people I get along with. A lot of the metal I listen to has satanic or occult ideologies in which I actually adhere to and most metalheads Ive interacted with listen to the music but suppose the ideologies and for them it's usually just an image, so they are like posers to me. It's like that country song, they are songs about me and what I believe in and that's one of the main reasons I like certain metal bands, sure I like the instrumentation and I like metal that doesn't necessarily support my viewpoints, but I find that some people really lack understanding of the subject material that these bands write their music about. Like behemoth, I'm an avid reader of aleister Crowley, Israel regardie and Kenneth grant and there are tons of behemoth fans or black metal fans that hate Aliester Crowley and dont recognize the direct references to thelema.

As metalheads our numbers are dismal compared to non-metalheads. We are a rare breed of people. I have some metalhead friends that I never get to see or keep in contact with. Metal may not be our only common bond. We could talk about horror, science fiction, and suspense movies. Books, history, and politics. Unfortunately, most of my friends dislike metal. I wish more people would understand us but that is up to them! Everyone has a preference!

A lot of ppl with common music interests also have commonalities in other areas. I agree with all of what you’re saying but I do miss to be able to talk with someone about guitar playing or metal music in general on top of all the things you’ve mentioned. I live talking about religion and politics and ghosts and big foot. But I also like to talk about what’s going on in the metal scene. At age 40 it’s hard.

The problem here seems to me what a person considers music to be. To me, and most metalheads I've met, music is almost spiritual (even though I'm not religious), it's art, it's above everything, it somehow explains everything and doesn't at the same time, it makes you question, it makes you feel, it gives you strength, hope or even knowledge. It is specially bonding when a lot of people that don't like it, happen to be extremely ignorant people that cannot get complex music (yes, I am aware there are very intelligent people out there that can pin-point exactly why they wouldn't like a type of music and with valid responses, but let's face it, that is not the majority of people in the world) or even listen to music at all. If you just consider music "this one thing I like", the same way you like ice-cream or sports or some "fun" series on Netflix, then sure, bonding only over that seems extremely superficial. I guess it depends on the value we put onto something. To me, metal music was a discovery that made me want to gain more knowledge and explore more about this weird world we live in, to question everything. Sure, there's a lot of idiots like on everything, and there are whole sub-genres that just want to "party" (though that in itself isn't bad), but I think metal is much more than that usually, and the fact that there are "no rules" makes it infinitely more interesting.
@michaelgonzales92mg
@michaelgonzales92mg 2 года назад
I understand what you mean, but for me being into metal really does help with bonding into friendship. I do talk to others at work that aren't into metal, but they are not my friends. I don't go have a beer and hangout with them. Being into the same music honestly does help, cause if you're gonna hangout with me at my house it's Metal or nothing. Now I do have other conversations other than Metal bands with my friends, sometimes it's games, sports, or horror but it was the Metal that made us best friends. My dad has had the same friends for 40 years, it was the metal that bonded them. But again they don't always just talk metal they do in fact talk about other subjects. However, it was because of Metal that they all became best friends. I guess what I'm saying is, you can have other friends that aren't into Metal, but in the end they're Just Friends and not you're Best Bros to hangout with or travel to a Metal fest with.

Usually metalheads who like the same bands will make great friends but of course it's not 100 percent. Also like you said I couldn't be friends with metalheads who had no goals in life and furthermore if they're real life Beavis/Butthead clones forget them. Also when I go to concerts that's when metalheads unite but sadly you only see those people on that one night.

I have been a metalhead since I was 12 years old. I've met some cool metalheads and some assholes who don't give a shit about any other but themselves. Most of my greatest friends who went to school with me aren't even metalheads. I used to have a huge grudge against preps, jocks, and popular kids but after meeting some who were nice, humble, kind, and respectful people I grew out of that mentality because I realized that there are assholes and bad people in almost every group of people. Hell, I even dated a preppy girl who liked me for who I am. So the thing is guys that don't befriend people for what they look, are into, or whatever, befriend them for who they are

I find that some can be gate keep-y. Not all, obviously. Back in my single days, talking with other single metal head dudes they seemed to be rather aggressive with their preferences..one got triggered at the mention of a certain Metallica album 😳 I am a melodic death metal girl but man his comment still took me aback dude brought it up himself too! Needless to say, my partner is 100% not into metal a single bit and that's absolutely okay. I remember I actually got some friends INTO metal because they were infact so open minded so we were even better friends than before. But yeah I am not in contact with them anymore because life and stuff but I still wish them the best. I totally wish I could find more metal head friends nowadays, music taste isn't everything but after a while it does get lonely that I don't have the ability to share a new metal release or recommendations and such.

I'm just going to leave this: my wife is my best friend and shes not a metalhead at all. Our relationship is built on more important things such as our beliefs, values, and just the fact that we like spending time with each other. Aside from that, I have plenty of friends that are not metalheads but have been interested in the fact that I am and have asked questions out it. I also have other interests that I can connect with people such as movies, comics, and video games. Also, are there any fellow dog lovers here?

I guess depends on the reason someone likes the music. Some metalheads like metal because it's "br00tal" and many of those are jerks, then there's intellectual reasons, emotional reasons, insecure reasons (a lot of interesting "weird" kids flock into metal too). Some of my best friends ever are metalheads, but I also met jerks of course.

Conclusion: metal or not, as long as you're cool. I'd rather be friends with a friendly non metalhead I can get on with than an unfriendly metalhead who I can't get on with.
