Controversial Opinions on Some Popular Celebrity Memoirs 👀| Monster Celebrity Memoir Wrapup

I'm doing a monster wrapup of every celebrity memoir I've read in the last two years! I read so many of these buzzy memoirs right when they came out, but better late than never right?! And strap in b/c I have some potentially... unpopular opionions about several of these massive bestsellers/crowd-pleasers!
A note that while discussing Colton Haynes' memoir, I mispoke CSA as childhood sexual assault. It's abuse, rather than assault.

As a non-Royalist Brit, it's very difficult to hear Harry talk about how the British public owe him a living. For context, he's a multi-millionaire currently suing the British Home Office for security costs, which is not only galling because it's expecting Brits to pay for his lifestyle abroad, but the money for the court case itself is coming ordinary people's pockets. And in his book he says it's no big deal that we pay for the royal family, since the cost of his lifestyle is the price of a pint per taxpayer... but I don't actually want my taxpayer money paying for some unelected rich bloke's private jets.

Prince Harry has never had any interest in being a royal. It's not his fault you Brits grovelled at his nans gnarly feet. It's a choice you all make to bow to his family. He is entitled to taxpayers money, just like the rest of his family. But I guess it's only the prince with the biracial wife that triggers you. Not the racist heir. Not the abusive king. Not the PDFile uncle. Just the spare who had the audacity to love a black woman.

Your observation about Matthew Perry's memoir was so interesting to me. I haven't read it, but in all the interviews and clips I had seen of him talking about his addiction and recovery, I was always unconvinced that he wasn't in fact still in active addiction.

I highly recommend Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher. It's her first and best memoir, and she was already a writer before writing it. Not only the storytelling quality is top notch, but so is the humor. Probably the funniest book I've ever read despite how sad and emotionally gripping it is. Edit: Also, she voiced the audiobook herself! It may take a while to get used to her tone, but she is an amazing voice actor!

Have you read Adam Savage's memoir, Every Tool's a Hammer? I genuinely loved it - it's not so much a book about industry tea and Mythbusters drama but rather a really thoughtful, profound analysis of what it's like to be a creator and an artist and a public figure. As a writer, I found it SUPER insightful. Plus, Adam is another one of those people that's just very well-read and has an amazing authorial voice. (If you watch any of his videos on his RU-vid channel Tested, you can definitely see a lot of that there too!) Also, there's an entire chapter devoted to the different types of glue. Which was unironically amazing.

I have to agree with something about I'm glad my Mom died. I really liked it - to the point where I have read it. As someone with my own bag of trauma and problems, I had to look after myself and put the book down for a while. I LOVE her writing style. It is so... direct. So honest and gripping. I can't wait for her fiction books to come out. As a writer, I aspire to have such a flow in my writing. And now I need to get my hands on the Memoirs from Jessica Simpson and Alison Arngrim!

I didn't read Jinger's cause hers isn't a memoir in my opinion. Its a sermon piece for their brand. I was impressed with Jill Duggars memoir though but that's because I'm very familiar with the Duggar saga and Jill has done the most honest look at her family and is the only one even close to actually acknowledging the abuse in her family. I'm with you in that I'd like to see where she is in another 10 years.

One celebrity memoir which I really enjoyed is Girl Walks into a Bar by Rachel Dratch. Not so much tea spilling on other celebrities, but more her struggles as an actress because not being beautiful by entertainment industry standards. And her struggles in the dating world-as someone who has been very unsuccessful at dating myself, I found it so refreshing and down-to-earth. More a breath of fresh air, like what you described about Geena Davis’s memoir.

I highly recommend Eddie Izzard's memoir BELIEVE ME. Especially if you are a fan of her comedy. She narrates the audiobook, but frequently goes off on little tangents and anecdotes (and sometimes songs) while reading, so there is a good amount of extra content only in the audiobook that is not in the book.

I am planning a book series based on “The 12 days of Christmas” where each book is set around one of the lines. It seems like each book is completely separate from each other except for the fact that each detective receives an anonymous invitation to a house where they all meet up at the end of their respective books to solve a group mystery in the last book. *Question:* what are 12 (non repeating) elements that are needed to solve murders that I can put in each book to tie them together ? (if you have other suggestions on how to connect each book I would love to hear them)

I watched a lot of videos. I also watched the videos, where you go all-in on self-publishing in previous videos years ago. my favorite memoir (and really, one of my all-time favorite books in general) is I Am Spock by Leonard Nimoy. ive been a trekkie since i was a kid but i didnt find a copy of this book until i was in my 20s and i absolutely DEVOURED it. he wrote it after writing his first memoir, I Am Not Spock. as you can tell from the titles, his attitude towards his own fame evolved a lot as he grew older and fandom evolved with him. it was a lovely and frank look into the life, thought processes, and creative flow a cultural icon. he was such an eloquent and passionate artist and that shines in his writing. you definitely don't have to be a trekkie to appreciate it and i will gush to anyone about this book for as long as i live 🥰

Fantastic reviews Alexa. I am going to purchase Confessions of a Prairie Bitch on audible. I watched Little House on the Prairie growing up and remember how awful Alison's character was. As for Spare I think Harry is a prime example of what a family doesn't need. Harry doesn't seem to be able to read the room. To be fair though I think he may not be the full quid so possibly he has been corrupted by those around him. I might also read Mel C's book as I love her accent as well. Thanks for the great reviews.

You know after watching your "Harsh Writing Advice" video many years go. All I thought was That's why your book didn't go so well. Because the editor ruined it. Publishers always say "Make it longer to make more money out of it. Make it a trilogy." but what if it just needs to be short in order for it to be good. like a Novella. if its a good long story then by all means do it, but most of the time it does not need to be. Lord of the Rings was supposed to be one book and so was Dune, the printers just weren't built for that yet. That video stuck with me in a bad way. I would rather be Zinester or a web-writer than deal with publishers and editors. I know I sound like a stupid brat right now, but this is something i thought about before and after the video for many years.

So now you don't like Harry and Meghan? Suprising. I wonder what on earth would caused that. I guess it bothered you when he told his side and tried to defend themselves? His family isn't mean they are cruel. They didn't dislike them, they tried to destroy them. But you clearly see things the same as the average Meghan hater. Those people do prefer to think of them as not human and that what they went through didn't matter. You said you didn't like hate comments but couldn't imagine what Meghan has gone through. Should he be over a lifetime of abuse? Are you gotten over yourself?

@AlexaDonne Well actually I took you at your words very literally. Just to be clear you said "You liked them less". Not that the book dragged, was boring or lacked substance, what you learned about the dynamics and family values of the British - etc. It was about them, personally. Your sentiment are similar to the folks that I know do spew venom. The passive aggressive ~ No one dislikes you. We just didn't like that you told us (your truth) about how bad your family treated you. You sound whiny. For them because it mares the perception of what they feel is important and who they want to prefer. What I am willing to say is that I have unfairly heaped upon you the baggage of others, and for that, I apologize. But I'd really say that you don't really understand the hate they, specifically Meghan gets because it's usually subtle as opposed to overt. They can never put their finger on that magic reason she can never be right. It isn't everyday a trip to a thriving African nation is reduced to a safari and they are only going because she's half black. It was just last week. It looks and sound like polite misunderstandings with intangible undertones. And I have been consuming too much of it lately so I did place too much at your feet. But I was only reacting to what was said.
