Well after numerous sleepless nights punching numbers, and weighing options...I am gonna try it. Not near as much can go wrong, so why not. If I succeed then , I think I will have a new respect for the process.

Hot damn..... some more road trip treasures.... You could sure have a spin off of the TV show American Pickers, "Nelson's farm Treasures." The intro could start out like, " Hello America, welcome to another adventure on Nelsons farm Treasures. Come along with me as we travel the southeast looking for forgotten farm finds. But before we can begin, I have to wash the mud off my tires.

Did you know i remember Dad spraying oats several times. We walked the beans, and them, and the corn. His advantage was plenty of hands to help. Some years he applied nitrogen, but most years not. I'm amazed we were organic when it wasn't a thing. Thank you Nelson.

Although it requires more labor and time you’re making the right choice . In my opinion conventional on a small scale will be easier and more profitable. Large scale I think it does make sense to do no till and chemical support. From 1967 to 1981 our family farmed raised wheat , beans then corn in a crop rotation that never saw one ounce of chemical spray only granular fertilizers. We worked approximately 40 acres and it worked just fine.

Your video brought back good memories!!! One of the earliest pieces of equipment we bought was a two row rolling cultivator.. Still got it and won't never get rid of it!!! Good luck with the plans for this year, glad you will be planting something!!!!..Grass is the big issue with corn and conventional, we grew conventional the first two years....not getting in your business but there are some fairly cheap pre-emerge chems that will help if you decide later to try some chemical control. Take care buddy!!

@Pennies_on_the_dollar science tells us that chemicals kill the soil and are harmful to the soil biology for years to come. Cultivation is not. Yes you kill some worms and create some extra compaction but not your killing near as many worms as chemicals and your plowing most of the compaction out every year. If you can figure out how to farm with out them you be better off for years to come as far as nutrients and soil health. But..... keep in mind that 2-4-D is relativity cheap. If you get to many broadleaf coming don't even think about if the 2'4-d will pay for itself because the simple answer is yes it will pay for itself multiple times depending on how many weeds you have coming up. Just a thought.

@@TheGrumpyFarmer Little Debbie snack cakes sound a lot better than a Debbie downer. OH, Mr. Nelson...........I don't want to be a Debbie Bitcher, but you need to at least put something down pre emerge. Then you can fight the weeds and grass with mechanical ways. If you don't have something down, and it would get wet for 2-3 weeks you will have the biggest greenest weed patch and never get ahead of it. You can not believe how much yield is lost when you have heavy weed pressure early.

I'm surprised you're still wanting to even try growing a corn crop with the status of the price currently ... Since you're going a conventional route, I would suggest a good corn that shades over the row fast . I'm actually going to do about 100 acres of corn this year whit dry urea pass and then later we will apply units of liquid with herbicide application. Between the dry application and the liquid, we have to get at least 150 units nitrogen out. Just to even see if it compares to the fall applied gas which I doubt it will since in the past experiences it was probably 60 bushel less in the liquid application vs gas in the fall

Well I debated, but if I don't try it I will never know! Most of what I hopefully can get to grow is sold to deer hunters, so I think it will be at least break even going through route I am possibly. I am in the same boat. I will be putting up with some weeds. But in corn I will do a pre.Emerge chemical to keep the crop clean until The corn is up and running and I can get cover crops in. In corn, a little bit of oats, buckwheat radish, hairy vetch and you'll ride grass. When the corn boot high, we would say like V3 growth sthat cover. Crop mix broadcast it on. It works really well for holding back weeds and helping the soil.. Also looking for a road crop cultivator because I don't have to borrow money to use that versus buying chemicals. I can easily live with some weeds in the field versus spending a lot of money to have a perfectly clean field

You sir are a genius when it comes to this stuff!! I actually have been watching lots of videos and decided to fix my little sprayer and do that same Pre emerge and incorporate it in right before planting. I too was reading and hoping it would help keep the grass and a few weeds at bay better than without. I don't wan to be butthole deep in a chemical Bill, so I chose the cheapest of the group 15's but should do the trick.I like that idea of the cover crops, I need to research some more of your videos! Been watching the nitrogen drop video alot 😉😉 I totally agree on the cultivators, I may have an issue with ripping some corn, but in tht end I think it will be cost effective!! Thank you very MUCH sir for the input and great help!! I have so much to learn, but loving every min of it!! I am in need of hitting my fields with the finisher to make them smooth. So I will wait until.I am ready to plant that field and then spray the herb aside and hid it with the finisher. The finisher will be replacing a lot of chemicals that would be used to try to kill that Early flush of weeds in a no till situation. It is not free to run the finisher.Or the road crop cultivator in season. But at the same time you are not borrowing money to buy chemicals. There is more to that row crop cultivating than we realize. I can remember about 20 years.A neighbor had a little field of corn and the corn looked okay. But the grasses and weeds we're catching up and almost looking better. 43 weeks I cultivated that field once a week until it finally got clean. That corn took off like nobody's business. I think there was a lot of nutrients in them.Weeds that got put into the soil and in our soil where it gets very compacted on top very quickly.I think we allowed some oxygen into the profile. To take the row crop cultivating to the next step.I would not mind putting anhydrous knife on the unit. kind of a ripping in row to break some compaction for water and air.

@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 You are so knowledgeable on this stuff, looking fwd to following along and seeing how things go for sure!! I can't say thank you enough for taking time to explain in greater detail my friend!! I like that finisher idea as well, I need to invest in one someday. I will try to hit the field last pass with my finish disc after spraying then immediately plant. The pre emerge I went with isn't the best and need some rain, but with light incorporation the results seem to be pretty good. I know nothing, but have been told by many now including yourself that the rollover of those weeds and such is weekly, bi-weekly value to the soil right next to the corn roots 🤔😉 Boy that would be the ticket on the anhydrous knife for sure. I would love to see that!! I wanted to and still might rig a liquid stream right at the cultivator to get it close and down in the soil a bit. Probably be next season though, but you sir have restory my faith in my wild choices!! Thank you very much Mr Jon, and look forward to seeing every step this season!! 😁😁👍👍

You're finishing disk can make a fantastic finisher. You just want to check the ground each year that you're not creating a compaction layer. I would not be stressing about finding something better right now. If you want a tank on your cultivator to give you some in season of nitrogen that is very simple for you to do. It would be the same as pulling your sprayer. A specific mile per hour with a specific tip size.Equals a gallons per acre rate. In corn I hope to not have to cultivate but if we do not the end of the world but i'm hoping to cover crop will help make the soil nice and keep weeds bad.

Hey Nelson, you've got your work cut out for you to run with no herbicide, but it can be done. I've done it with corn, and had really weedy corn, but it still made grain. I'm hoping I can get a different cultivator together before I try it again. Like a few other people have said, you'll probably need to find a rotary hoe. May the weather, timing, and luck all be on your side, my friend!

That I do Evan, might have bitten more than I wanna chew, but usually have a back up plan 🤦🤣🤣 That's what I'm wondering about, all of anything that grows will be deer corn anyway 🤔 I am hard headed to say the least, but time will tell for sure!! What did you cultivate with? I'm thinking on spending the coin and fixing the sprayer, and doing a great pre emerge before planting and trying to keep the weeds at bay with the cultivators in the row spacing at least. Who knows, I am so green it's not even funny 🤦🤦🤣🤣🤣 Thank you very much, I have been talking to Tim about that Rotary hoe pass/passes. Boy my nerves and OCD might limit that for me 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you Evan for always being here, I really appreciate that!! 👍👍😁😁🇺🇸🇺🇸🌽🌽🌽🌽

@@Pennies_on_the_dollar I've got a John Deere cultivator that I cut down to be a 2 row, and it does ok but it doesn't work well on my tractor. The Allis doesn't have a good 3 point setup and it doesn't stay on the row well. So I found 2 front mount 2 row cultivators for it and I'm trying to modify one of them into a 4 row. Hopefully I'll get back to working on that later this year. I think the front mount will be easier to see what I'm doing too.

@@evanaustin2636For sure Evan, I can see what you're saying with a 3-point, I'm a little worried about that myself. I would love to find a Farmall C or Super C, and get some front mount cultivators. I found one good price but it needs motor work, and I sure don't need any more projects right now. I look forward to seeing your creation on that modification Evan, thank you my friend 😁😁👍👍🌽🌽🌽

@@Pennies_on_the_dollar I think if you are using a tractor with a real factory 3 point you shouldn't have much of a problem. My Allis doesn't have sway blocks or depth control, so it makes it difficult to control. I think you should be fine whether you use the Massey or your Allis to cultivate with
