The sixth and final conversation in our Reconstructing Children's Rights Institute series, How Can Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion be Understood and Applied in Humanitarian and Development Organizations?, reflects on the successes and shortcomings of DEI initiatives and the broader 18-month endeavor to “decolonize aid” and “shift power.” The conversation unpacks the international children’s rights and child protection industry’s forms of discrimination, inequalities, implicit biases, and realities of exclusion.
We were joined by three experts - Chernor Bah, Dr. Santi Kusumaningrum, and Marie-Rose Romain Murphy - for a live discussion on centering non-Global North stakeholders and organizations to inform the necessary changes to work in different contexts and organizational realities.
Organized by the CPC Learning Network, housed in the Program on Forced Migration and Health in the Department of Population and Family Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, this discussion brings forward critiques which have been marginalized to the fringes of international relations scholarship and teaching to the center of our discussions.
We hope that the Institute will be a vehicle for learning, information sharing, and taking actionable next steps. We are striving to create a space in which our discussions and resources can tackle hard topics while remaining a safe and respectful environment for evolution and growth among those who participate.
