Down frontman and rock legend Phil Anselmo discusses boxing, running, Housecore Records and living in New Orleans in the latest installment of Converse x Decibel.
plaguelock If you stay clean for a while and relapse, be ever so careful not to dose at the same level you left off at!!! I lost my best friend last year from that and I think anyone with experience knows this, including him, but it seems too easy to do! Either that or he just decided to nod out and not come back! I think multiple attempts to get clean started to way on him! Stay strong brother!
the words that have gotten me off of sugar, alcohol, drugs, distraction and negative habits. I'm freaking stoked that I'm reminded of my passion for living and taking chances with your passions of life.
The only thing I'm jealous of Phil is if it's bad ass f****** scream. And I love how people want to talk s*** about him he don't have it no more. I think he sounds pretty goddamn good still
Do you have any Pantera tattoos? I have a dime tattoo on my left forearm and a Pantera leg.if you want to send me a friend request on Facebook. You can if you want
Jonas Ernest. A legend.... But Ozzy? No man. BS created metel. Pantera just pulled it out of a slump. Don't get me wrong. Pantera is my fav and I am from NOLA so you know Imma fan of Phil's. They just werent there to kick it ofd like BS was. Had they been there......No doubt.
Ice Kube Qwerty The consensus I’ve gotten from the most recent interviews and podcasts is that he successfully quit drinking in mid-2016, but he still smokes weed. These are his own words at least. He definitely sounds more lucid and not-drunk is any interviews or videos since late-2016. He’s obviously caused himself some permanent damage, which is why he still has that natural slurred speech. But it’s a far cry from when he was openly inebriated before late-2016. He wasn’t stated this aspect himself, but I get the feeling that the DimeBash incident in January 2016 was probably a big part of what led him to really take quitting drinking seriously, whether it’s conscious or not. Just my take on it.
ONLY HIM KNOWS THAT, AND MAYBE HIS GIRLFRIEND, AND THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE, I COULD SPEAK FOR HOURS, HOW MANY TIMES I'VE LIED WHEN I WAS A WRECK, I'm not saying Phil is doing dope, i think everybody can see that, BUT SOBER IS A HARSH WORD MY FRIEND...
I don't think I've ever had an initial worse impression of someone to eventually completely loving someone. For YEARS I didn't like Pantera, but I LOVED the guitar work by Dimebag... Now I just love Phil as an inspiring force of nature.
There's a lot to take away from this video. I've been a huge fan of Phil for years, but this video is motivational on a level that not many others are. Hearing some of this stuff from a guy like Phil really brings it home.
Approachable.....still have to hold back tears and blood from the eyes recalling THEY FORGOT ABOUT ME on that meet and greet. Was damn hard to rock in front row. Next time Phil.
phil has been my hero basically my entire life. my older brother turned me on to metal when i was in like kindergarten and he looks a lot like phil and my big bro was the coolest and toughest dude i knew. im a 29 year old turd now with two herniated discs and sciatica and had to use a cane for almost a year. this video was pretty awesome
I have grown up around addicts of all sorts and have never seen someone go so deep over the edge and comeback and display the sheer will that Phil has, love this guy
So happy to see Phil getting healthy. His music is an inspiration and has completely changed my life, getting through times I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. Thank you for staying alive
You are very fortunate, because you still are standing tall, and you are telling us about it.thank you Phil your fans love you always.i am glad you as an artist.you are in a good place in your life.i wish nothing but the best for you.🤘😁💖🌟🤑🎊🤪💡👍
Phils bone marrow is magnetic. The man is metal through the BONE -period! I can see him being an awesome metal producer in the studio.I wish him great success with his bands and prospects!
I used to hate Phil and now all I wanna do is shake his hand and talk to him while we feed his ducks or something. 😆 He just seems like a genuinely cool dude.
This was Phil absolutely stone cold friggin’ sober. It’s amazing to see him like that. It reminds me of the Phil from 1991-93. Sharp, funny, laidback, lighthearted, but still absolutely driven. (No pun intended actually) Very cool to see.
Thank you Phil for showing everyone what the adult in the room does in life. You have always been my favorite. My daughter is trying to get off drugs and she is using Phil as her guide. Never let the assholes break you 🤘 Thank you for everything over the years

You have to go through it to live it I had back surgery at age 23 never 100% again in life lost 25 kg ended up having 7 boxing bouts in my 30,s all the best phil
The Kid left his mark. He is a good dude. I respect the way he has handled the past and what we all lost. I was pissed at him for years. Time has showed me his real heart. Much respect Brother.
My absolute most favorite musician, performer and personality in the music world. Been a fan since Cowboys and still a fan of The Illegals and his Housecore label. I need to get one of the #PhilsEyesLogo #Hoodies.
Having a major injury to your back/spine. Can be debilitating. It's very easy to take pain killers as a quick fix. Then they don't work anymore and you start taking more and more. Now your fight 2 things. The pain and addiction. To come back from addiction with major pain issues is a MAJOR accomplishment. My deepest respect for all that have traveled this road. It can be done. Phil is proof. Good Vibes 🤘
Being a fellow child of '68 and having been through a lot of the same thoughts and feelings as Phil, I sure wish that I could meet him again with my head on straight. Like the others said, all and only the best wishes for Phil. God Bless
The word you were struggling to not use is blessed, I am religious and I do love metal. You definitely have a talent and one of my favorite metal voices. Yahweh is real and you are blessed, each day the father gives us is a blessing. Peace to you brother.
Thank you Phil for doing what you're doing and promoting these guys out there that are trying to make it and produce good music. Got good memories here seeing you and your brothers days and I've had all your albums that all of you all made in the past. Good influence in my life. I'm more of a percussionist but I damn sure have played every instrument and I used to scream my heart out just like you at parties with my friends. We would play sometimes until the sun come up playin Pantera songs Primus White zombie no effects and a huge list everything that we could. We had some really good parties and really good covers. Glad that you and wrecks got together and got this going again
A true pro in the "industry" a student in life... he's humble and grounded his songs/lyrics have moved me for over 2 decades now I love the dude and will always support his projects/bands etc...
I really wish Phil could only know how much I appreciate the message of strength he's put out and who he is. He's my biggest influence and I wish to find peace toward the second half of my life in a way he has. From music to simply just existing and finding wisdom he is just a wonderful person
Hope you stayed with it.. here's some words that somebody wrote that stuck out to me: I'm not a 100% but who is? I lose a little sleep but who doesn't? I wake up unmotivated and a little weak but so does everyone else. That's just part of life. Remember this and go beat that addiction! Long live Phill and PANTERA
Phil......damn it is great to see him back on track, cleaned up, healthy, lean, and mentally sharp as a knife. Much respect Phil. You practice what you preach. Stay motivated and stay positive. It's where you come from.
5:15 - "Pineal Gland" written on wall - just about the headstock of the guitar, surrounded by exclamation marks. I guess this is where Superjoint's "The Alcoholik" music vid was shot
Wow this is probably the best and most genuine interview or side I'd seen of Phil Anselmo! Best interview ever. Its refreshing to take a look at Phil's personal life and realize that he truly is a down to earth and genuine person. I feel very bad for his back pain though. He is such a trooper, he makes me look like an idiot when I complain about small things. And its also good to see that he is very positive, light hearted, and most of all genuine as how he always was.
I am a full time Drummer and I’ve had 7 back surgeries ending in a 13 level fused spine with rods and screws. 3 hip replacement surgeries as well. I have had to re learn how to walk and it’s been a heel of a ride. Giving up was never an option for me. Point is DONT EVER GIVE UP ON LIFE! Stay strong and get some
Man,Ive seen Pantera 5 times live, godly.Phil's been thru alot.To see how he has evolved is inspiring. It's called evolution-going forward not back.Cant wait for his solo album and biography,he's always interesting to listen to.
thank you for that whole depth video... Very inspiration. And people wonders why i want to work and hang out with this guy.... There see what i see at last.
I’ve been a big fan of Pantera and just a big fan of Phil for a very long Time, he’s such a great vocalist and one of The greatest frontmen of all Time without a doubt!!!
