Hello, I'm a Crypto Jew and I've known this for most of my life, but only recently have returned to the original faith of my ancestors. I'm learning Hebrew, going to Synagogue on Sabbaths and making new friendships amongst my Jewish community. I have been embraced by the Jewish Community as a lost family member and probably for the first time in my life, I'm at ease with who I am: a survivor. Most of my Jewish peers are White Ashkenazie, whereas I'm definitely tanned. When I'm asked what my ethnicity is, I tell them my family has a persistent, 5,000 year old desert tan. This always elicits a chuckle and many times, a hug from the older ladies. Almost as if I'm a living connection to an almost forgotten past.

They relocated from Spain to all over the Spanish empire, Europe and Africa during the infamous Spanish Inquisition. However, this exodus has never been properly tracked because traces of them can be found in Britain, particularly Scotland. Israelites have been going there even before Solomon time. Just like part of the tribe of Dan lived in Crete during the slavery in Egypt in slavery. Jonah was going to Spain before getting thrown off the boat. Yemeni Jews owned ALL of Yemen. So, doesn't matter where they live. It's still Mishpocha. And unless DNA is done by Israel, it's not proof. Israel is number one in DNA. Family tree is bull!! We even have Sephardic in Russia (Bucharians). Jews are great in assimilation. So, yes. Tankguy1981 hola, I have been trying to find my roots for about 4 years now, what I found was very minuscule, three out of the four surnames close to me are from Spain proper, however, when I investigated my surname Ortega online (since there are no records on either side of my family I have been using online resources) I found many sites and read many articles saying my surname is Jewish, I even went to the Spanish requirements to get a passport for a Jewish descendant, my last name is on that list too, I recently also read a blog that described how some of the arriving sephardic Jews looked like and I have those physical characteristics, I read an anthropological study on the physical characteristics of European Jews and this reconfirmed that I have many physical features which resemble a European Jew, however, although I have suspicions and some evidence I can't conclusively confirm these suspicions, even with my evidence. If it isn't too much trouble, would you be willing to give me some pointers as to how I can get more information about this? Thank you for your time -Jose Ortega

While what you are saying about non-Jewish Latin Americans with suspected Jewish heritage embracing Jewish roots, in some cases converting to Judaism or just visiting Israel to explore their Jewish heritage there are othger reasons you may have heard a lot of Spanish in Israel. Fiorst, lots of Spanish and Latin American tourists visit Israel just to be tourists or to go on Christian pilgrimages without necessarily trying to explore any Jewish background that they believe they may have, and second, besides all the people who believe they have (and in many cases, actually do have) Jewish roots from the conversos/Marranno.crypto-Jews who fled Spain for the New World there are still also lots of Jewish Latin Americans (Ashkenazim and Sefaradim alike) who aren't descended from those 15th century Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity. In the late 19th through the mid-20th century, many Jews immigrated to Latin America, especially Argentina and Mexico, from Poland, Ukraine and Romania, part of the same Eastern European Ashkenazic Jewish migration fleeing the pogroms who went to the USA wound up in Argentina. Many chose Argentina because the Hirsch family of French Jewish philanthropists purchased agricultural land in Argentina to establish Jewish farming settlements, later many of those Jews wound up in Buenos Aires. LAter many Turkish and Syrian Sephardic Jews also went to Argentina. Similarly Mexico was a destination for many Eastern European Ashkenazic Jews and Turkish and Syrian Sephardim. The current mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is of mixed Ashkenazic and Bulgarian/Turkish Sephardic ancestry her grandparents only immigrated to Mexico in the 1920s. Lots of Moroccan Jews went to Venezuela in the 1960s, many Jews fleeing the Holocaust also wound up in Cuba, Colombia, all sorts of places in Latin America. So, yeah, there is this is thing where people from Latin America learn about their Jewish heritage from before 1492 and some convert to Judaism and move to Israel, but you hearing all those people speaking Spanish in Israel might also be the grandchildren of relatively recent immigrants who only moved to Latin America in the 1920s. Argentina anyway has like the 5th largest Jewish population and many Argentine Jews moved to Israel.

I like the video. I think you might have considered mentioning the Moriscos (Islamic Moors forced to convert in Spain/Portugal) who shared a very similar background, including expulsion from Spain and diaspora around the world. The numbers are fewer because the Moriscos had a homeland to return to at the time (North Africa) but many followed the same routes as the Sephardic Jews (Conversos or ones who fled rather than have any pretense of conversion). I will also comment that the Converso immigration to the New World was also largely via Holland, France (Protestant Huguenot areas) & England that were protestant and offered safe haven. In particular the Dutch were relatively tolerant and had their own colonies in Brazil (before losing to Portugal) and the West Indies. Many also ended up in Virginia and South Carolina colonies via Barbados. Of course this is detailed but some tangential mention of these points would have been nice.

When I was 11 I was told about our Jewish ancestry and how we must never speak about it. I didn't understand it then but I could sense the fear and seriousness of the secrecy when my father spoke about it, I imagine my grandfather had a similar talk with him when he was a child. My dream is to help Conversos speak up and come back to Israel. I myself did it. I learned that I was Jewish at age 13 when my grandfather, in the mountain town of Utuado, Puerto Rico, told me that I must know that we're Jews and that we come from Jerusalem and that if I forget Jerusalem my tongue would stick to the roof of my mouth. At that time I turned to my mother and I asked her: what are Jews? And she brushed it off and said we're like gypsies but from Jerusalem. My grandparents were cousins on their mother's side and we kept very few traditions, mostly names, and this tradition at 13 years old. They didn't know anything about Judaism as a religion, or Zionism and Jerusalem, yet the spark was there. The difference? I grew up with Internet and I pieced the puzzle together. Including Esther as a common name in my family. Today I'm an Israeli.

DNA testing is great for family relationships and diseases. At this stage DNA testing for ethnic heritage is not very meaningful and controversial, especially if the percentages, such a 5%, are low, and it would be great if the narrator of this video would say so. The only sure way for a non-Jew to confirm Jewish heritage is to show a DNA relationship with Jewish individuals or a paper trail of some sort through genealogical research. Of course, habits like not eating leavened bread at around Easter and marking the Shabbat somehow are positive signs.

@Michelle If a Jew believes in Jesus they aren't a Jew. All described came out 2000 years before Christianity. The Hebrew Abraham made a covenant with Hashem that all male Jewish babies would be circumcised to differentiate the Hebrews from the idol worshippers. That still goes on today. The Torah, the Bible of the Hebrews was written 5000 years ago in Hebrew a language still spoken today in Israel. The European Christians adopted the Hebrew, now Jewish religion's laws.

@Gisselle ST, if you are replying to me then my point is that 5% does not necessarily mean anything, Jewish ancestry or otherwise. The companies selling these DNA analyses for ethnic heritage are 'over-egging' the pudding, and implying an accuracy and precision that isn't/aren't there. The most reliable method is to follow the paper trail. If you find a halachically Jewish ancestor then yes, you have Jewish heritage. If that is not possible, why bother? Use DNA testing for where it works, which is for family relationships and diseases.

To set things into perspective, all this happened after the reconquest, which was when a bunch of Christian kingdoms expelled Muslim rulers from Spain and Portugal, that were usually more friendly towards Jews and other religious minorities, but as the reconquest happened nearby Muslim rulers in Africa and Christian rulers in France and England sort of asked both sides to deal with the Jews, some of who had even gained political positions like military generals and economic advisers.

Portugal was initially a point of relative refuge for Spanish (or rather, Castilian Jews) who were expelled in 1492. There is a field near Bragança in north east Portugal where many Spanish Jews gathered in terrible conditions before being admitted. It did not last, as under pressure from Spain, the same laws were introduced in Portugal, but many managed to escape, including to Turkey. Some crypto-Jews in Portugal only 'came out' c.1928 in Belmonte (terrible timing given events in Germany). In north-eastern Portugal there is a mainly Jewish village Carção, near Bragança which has a menorah on its coat of arms. There is a local food the 'alheira' (garlic sausage) made with chicken. The crypto-Jews would make sausages ostentatiously but using chicken not pork. By the time the Christians discovered the ruse, things had calmed down and it was adopted into the local cuisine.

Portugal is Spains older sister? Are you insane? Portugal was born from Leon not the other way around. Portugal shares a common history with the rest of Hispania or Spain for thousands of years. They are the same people with slightly different languages but mutually intelligible. But the county of Portugal was born from the Reconquista of the northern Iberian kingdoms of Asturias, Navarra, Aragon, Leon and later Castile. Portugal was just one more Iberian Hispanic kingdom and not Spains elder sister.

Problems here...at least at this point, DNA tests can only measure Ashkenazi lines, not Sephardic. That was the whole reason I got my DNA test and was disappointed when 23 and Me said that they couldn't measure that yet. The other issue is about mixing Jewish and Christian traditions...not really possible because Christian traditions WERE Jewish. It's more about getting back to its original roots. Yeshua (Jesus) was Jewish and so were all the disciples and the early church members. It was Constantine in 300 AD who stripped Christianity (or rather Jews who recognized Yeshua as the messiah). They forced early Christians to celebrate Jesus's birthday and resurrection on pagan holidays instead of the original feasts now considered Jewish, but in reality are God's. And in terms of OCD or AOC (whatever her name is), while it's entirely possible, I wouldn't hang my hat on what a politician claims they are while they are trying to win over a group of people.

I’m Spanish and very familiar with the actual writings of the time, the trigger for the expulsion of Jews was the constant attacks by Jews on catholic processions, for example a young Jewish girl would throw from her window urine and feces from a bucket at a statue of Christ in a procession on the streets and many other instances, the expulsion of Jews happened for a reason, not as they would have you believe, also the law of historical memory to allow Jews back in to Spain based on proof that they have Sephardic ancestry is flawed, the Spanish government n science doesn’t recognize that as valid, there is so much bs in this video, but its so sneaky that most people will think that there is actually a Jewish gene, there is not, I have no idea why they have to create these narratives that are categorically false.

Antonio de Bassan himself in his 1544 "Sefer ha-Refu'ot" said the Bassanos are also of davidic origin as well, and that the surname "Bassano" comes not from the city of Bassano del Grappa but from the land of Bashan in Israel that Moshe & Israel took from King Og. She is pro-BDS, whose goal is to economically strangle Israel and by its founder's own words, end its existence. She backed out of an appearance at an event sponsored by a Jewish peace group honoring the late Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated by an extremist for making peace with a former enemy of Israel. She has ignored and refused to take meetings with high-ranking Jewish community leaders in her own district. She has been conspicuously silent about the recent spike in antiSemitic hate crime in her district of Brooklyn. She is allied with bigoted Jew-hater Linda Sarsour, who calls journalists "the Jewish media," tells her audience "not to humanize the Israeli people," says "you cannot be Zionist and feminist at the same time," ran Israeli and Jewish woman out of the Woman's March, and was kicked out of The March's leadership for her bigotry. That one token appearance by her at the event in this video was nothing more than bare-minimum political pandering. Most Jewish American activists are done with her.
