In this tutorial, we will learn how to easily convert any 2D picture into a 3D mesh object in Blender. The Import As Plane option does not really create a 3D object, there are better and easy methods described here. You can easily import 2D image into Blender and create your 3D model. Please watch the video for the complete tutorial. If you have any question on this tutorial, please leave your comment below.

Maybe a little remark her, you first to enable the import of Images: Edit > Preferences. Click the Add-Ons tab. Search “Image” Activate the “Import-Export: Import Images as Planes” Close User Preferences window. File > Import > Images as Planes, or in the 3D Viewport press Shift+A > Images > Images as Planes. Find and select an image to import.

thank you this was missing......... edit: I also only get a gray rectangle when I import it, looks like you need to set the render mode to "texture"! Fort this you must look at the bar below your view where it says view/select/add/object etc, and you need to select the white circle which is "solid" and set it to "texture"

Thank you! Is the mesh ready to be printed in colour or do I have to do to any step before printing?
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 2 месяца назад
You mean 3d printing in color? I am not sure because a 3d color printer is not easily available. But the colors are already added for the model as separate materials, so it should be taken care of by whatever converter you use between the model and your 3d printer.

@@5MinutesBlenderthank you! I have another question: I transformed an svg image into mesh like you did. How do I print it but make it the typical grey?
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 13 дней назад
@@francichiara2262 You can select the object and go to its materials tab. Remove all the materials and add a fresh material. Then change its base color to grey. I suggest you keep a backup of the original object so that the original materials are retained, just in case you need to revert back the changes.

@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 2 года назад
Hey, although I did not get your question fully, I guess you have a complex source image, with disjoint parts, which you want to convert into 3D. You can think of breaking it into few pieces (say 4 pieces), and process them separately. Later you can easily join them into one single object in Blender.

Man if you want to continue this series, plase create short and specific videos about this. Like how to edit specific face in an object because I do not know how, I know how to select each but when I try to edit specific face or line all is affected. We need specific videos to each task. Other youtubers are bombarding us with a lot of infos and its very intimidating
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 2 года назад
Ok, sure! Please let me understand, when you say how to edit specific face, you mean any object in general, or is it about the mesh that you created from a 2D picture? And what type of edit are you looking for - a shape change, a color change, or something else?

Sir, I'm imported an image in 2d animation window, objects>add>image as a plane . But images always shows behind the sketch, can't solve that problem, plane distance also changed but not working, any solution?
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender Год назад
For 2D animation, the distance to camera plays no role, everything falls upon a single plane. The image that you imported will get superimposed with the existing drawing. This is the normal behavior. What do you actually want to achieve or what is your requirement?
@Sofya889
@Sofya889 2 года назад
It based on the "import" - "images as plans" but i dont have this option! How to load an image if I don't have this option in the menu?
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 2 года назад
Hi, you can enable that option by going into the Edit menu > Preferences > Add-ons > Type "import images as planes" in the search box there and check the selection box. However, we have shown in this tutorial that import images as planes is an outdated process and it does not give the best result always. So the alternative method is what we should follow. Skip the first part of the tutorial and start from 0:57 onward.

@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 3 месяца назад
Creating an asymmetric model from multiple perspective images is probably not yet possible. There are some AI tools that can help you do this modeling to some extent, but they are also not perfect and they are all paid options. I am not aware of a better solution yet.

For me it does not work when I import the svg I only see 3 lines crossing. No matter how large i size it up
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender Год назад
There are a few cases where I did notice that the conversion does not work as expected. I can assure you that the problem in on the SVG part, not with Blender. SVG is a collection of graphs which is called Curves in Blender. But the interpretation or the architecture of a curve is likely to be slightly different in two software programs and that is what causes the small number of failed cases. One way to solve it is to use a different program to create the SVG file. Sometimes that would work. Sometimes it may be a wise idea to divide the source image into two parts and convert them separately into two 3D objects and then merge them within Blender. It varies from case to case and there is no fixed way. But if you can send your source picture, we can try to help you convert that into a clean 3D object in one way or the other. Our contact details are given in the About section of this channel. Thank you!

Hi, it can happen if the source image is not correctly processed (not correctly converted into vector). I noticed this sometimes with some part of an image, but never with the whole image. Can you please try with a different image and let me know if you get any different result?
@noted123

What happens when we have an image with a lot of curves? Like an artistic image? When I tried to convert it, exported me to blender thousands of curves and blowed up my blender :(
@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 3 года назад
Hi, it will create one curve for each color. When you convert the image to a vector, you choose how many colors to use (less colors means less details, more colors means finer details preserved). So you know beforehand how many curves will be generated (plus one more for the background, unless you have a transparent image). Go for 8, 12 or 20 curves and check if the quality is acceptable. If still unable to resolve, I can help you for your specific case if I get a copy of the image you are trying to convert. Thanks for watching the tutorial!

Please try to reduce your poly count. Sometimes when you convert an image to svg and import it to Blender, it can create too many vertices compared to what your RAM can handle. This is specially true if you have too many color bands in the image.

@5MinutesBlender
@5MinutesBlender 2 года назад
@@torreymurcott3472 Sorry for this late response, I was out of the town during this weekend. Anyway, to answer your question, yes the tutorial works great for any photo as far as Blender is concerned. However, you may face a challenge while converting the photo into svg, specially for a large photo. It can turn into grey, it can have missing parts, I have myself faced all these issues. But if you get the svg part correct, you won't get any issues in the Blender part, that much is guaranteed. So for a complex picture, I would suggest you to go for a more professional software like Illustrator. The success rate & the output quality of this method solely depends on the quality of the svg file that you generate first. Hope that helps!
