Convert any Scooter From AC to Full DC | Activa | change headlight connection from engine to battery
This video shows how to convert any scooter (in my case Honda Activa ) from AC to Full DC so that you can use LED bulb easily it is also referred as changing headlight connection from engine to battery. I have modified my activa to make this happen.

That’s a pretty nice setup man. I found an High/Low LED light that plugged right into my scooter which runs fine off the AC power setup it has. It is less bright at idle but still very good compared to the original light, and when accelerating it is just as bright as a DC setup LED.

Shanu Das thank you bro 😎 And yea you can use rectifier by taking input from the wires of the alternator which can be found at the RR . But it will be additional circuit which can have reliability issues and you will need to be extra cautious with the circuit. I had done the same using a rectifier and a voltage regulator to keep the voltage stable at 13-14v . You can use this to charge the battery but LED's are very sensitive to current so there will be fluctuations which will shorten the life of the led bulb. Hope this will help you

On my Kymco Agility there's a connector between the headlight unit and the rest of the scooter's electrics. I replaced that with a molex (old style 4 pin hard drive model) and made a circuit with 3 rectifiers to just provide DC to the head light unit. It needs 3 rectifiers, because there's only 1 ground wire from the headlight unit, so it needs one for the 5W marker light and 2 for the actual headlight. This is probably the more expensive option, but it was the least 'invasive' with regard to having to alter the wiring of the scooter. I did it this way for 2 reasons, first this way I am not overloading the battery charge circuit on my scooter. The electrical diagram in the service manual says the rectifier and charge controller unit can only output 30W on my scooter. I don't want to overload that, seeing as that also has to run the CDI. Second, this way I can just remove my little convertor circuit and take it with me to a new scooter when I buy one. Zip tie the molex connector together, put in a halogen bulb and it's basically stock again.

Fermitu Poupon that's well thought from your side. from what you have mentioned I think you can go about with one bridge rectifier and use that to power the marker and headlight. However if things are similar to that of honda or most of the scooter electronics , then you will still have voltage drop during idling untill the engine rpm reaches the threshold to output 12vdc. This will be more prominent if you make use of LED headlight bulb and can damage the bulb. Alternatively if 30w is what reaches your battery then you might also consider connecting rectified dc output to the battery in parallel (you will not overload the charging instead you will provide enough juice available for battery to change ) I did not do that because anyway I'm not drawing anything from the stator directly via Regulator to power up so the total output of the stator is used to charge the battery itself. And don't worry about the CDI , the battery works like a buffer ,it will charge without any problem.

hi, thanks for the tube. very informative, i got to know about relays. one doubt though. you instructed to connect battery +ve to relay30. dont we need a fuse in between? how about taking a line from lock switch and feed it to both light switch and relay30? as there is factory built fuse between battery and lock switch, i guess we don't have to put another. am i right? i want put headlight on DC via a switch in my Activa 4G BS4. appreciate your answer. pls help me understand the concept. thanks

Yes sir , I did mention to use a fuse In between battery +ve and the relay for protection. You can use supply from stock lock switch but then it will pass voltage from stock wiring which can be less than what you can get directly from the battery

Circuit in original part in your picture is what you should be doing to convert your bike to DC. Original stock uses alternating DC .Main ac voltage >30vac comes from alternator to regulator and then gets regulated to alternating DC to the headlight bulb. 1) 70w load is not recommended as the size of battery in activa is small so you will face low battery problems 2) No relays, it's on Regulator Rectifier (RR unit) 3) yes headlight and Tail light are parallel 4) which visor? Watch the video again carefully after considering my points and you will understand. If not then I'm still here😄

Thanks for reply Rahil ji I'm not done bugging you 😁 1) I thought stock H4 draws 35+35=70w while on high beam. I'm wrong then. still how those 8w rated headlight switches in older Activas were protected without using relay? if they switched headlights without relay, why can't we do it now? 2) only diff between 2 parts of the drawing is where I connect relay30. what's wrong if i connect both relay30 & relay85 to +ve comin from lock key instead of running separate wire and fuse directly from battery to relay30? I do this and still expect the circuit works good and I'll have lesser load on switch?

Haha no problem Rajesh sir😄 1)stock halogen uses 2 filaments, one for high and one for low beam, 35w each at a time . From what I know the switches are just made up of copper terminals for the only purpose of connectivity. That's it The purpose of relay is just to bypass the voltage from stock wiring to the new bulb directly. This method is efficient. Also note I disconnected the stock supply at the high low switch

No idea about that but why the 5G headlight? For brightness or just for the look? For the look then it's fine or else you are better on with the reflector for brightness

When you use your bike in daytime the battery will be charged and during the night time charging will be slow and sometimes it will not charge depending on what kind of bulb you use. Bro what's the profit it consumes the power of battery.I think you've to add a bridge rectifier and a stable boost converter in the wire of output which comes out through alternator but it costs a lot almost 600 rupees of bridge rectifier and boost converter and you can install led on head as well as tail also and boost converter give a smoother voltage output without battery otherwise your explanations are appreciatable ok thank-you.❤️

Greetings buddy, most of the ones that you get in market are plug and play types. But if at all you want to go the diy route then take connection +ve and -ve from battery with a fuse in between on the +ve side and then use a step down circuit board or a car charger circuit so that the +12v from battery gets converted to 5v and then use your mobile charging cable and plug it in the usb, done!!! You have a charging cable ready. For the holder you will have to fabricate it according to where you place it.

Lock switch gives connectivity from battery to rest of the electricals running on 12v dc. Ac comes from stator

It will take little more time to charge higher capacity battery to it's full capacity. So no problem installing higher capacity battery

Brother great work. I have restored my dads old 1996 bajaj chetak. I want to add the LED bulbs to it. Since chetak 96 doesn't have battery and I dont want one. But I want to use DC lights on it directly from stator coil. I got to know, I need to add Regulator Rectifier for the same, which will convert AC to DC. I am using a 4pin regulator rectifier. Great!! I love restorations😊👍 Comming to your requirement, First of all you will have to use a battery if you want to run LED bulbs on the Chetak. Otherwise like I said in the video leds are sensitive and will die in no time. Let's say even if you don't use battery ,use a RR and get Rectified DC , it will still be alternating DC. In simple words led will work fine when your Chetak will be in the correct RPM range at which the voltage output is 12v but when the rpm drops the LED will start flickering. Also led will stop glowing before even the engine idles when you will get the Chetak to a stop. In short, you need a battery ,along with RR 😊

Can we add anything else to stop it apart from using battery. If yes kindly explain. If not, a battery is a must. Then which battery would be fine in my case. Leds will die quickly with the flicker. You can use any 12v two wheeler battery which suits the size and budget. I would prefer amaron battery. And since you don't have self start the battery will last a very long time too. Also make sure to use a 10amp fuse in series with the battery to the output for safety purpose

Friend, I am planning to install LED headlight in my Activa just like you did. However, I have some concern regarding it. I use my Activa almost daily for commuting(20-30km). Often I need to ride in rain/fog/dust(construction) during late night. Does LED really provide better visibility in rain/fog as compared to our Halogen? Is it useful on highways/single lane roads?

I did not understand you but yeah if you want to convert to DC then you can use a 2step headlight on off switch so that you can control the parking bulb as well as the headlight

It does not affect battery life unless you use some cheap quality bulb. I changed my battery which was installed when I had done this conversion along with the bulb and it worked me for 4.5 years. I changed to new battery just 2 days back😊

Resistor is not necessary as already battery is a stable power supply, the voltage comming to battety also passes through Regulator Rectifier. The Rating of relay can be less too depending on the current drawn by the headlight bulb you use. The standard horn relay is 30A which is available in the market for cheap

You can use a simple rectifier and get the job done, but I would not suggest you to do that to use LED bulb because like I said they are current sensitive and without stable current you will damage the LED bulb in no time.

The logic is same as what I have mentioned here, find a +12v after the lock switch and pass it through the on off switch to the relay coil, then connect the other end to ground. Then use a +12v from battery to the relay input and connect the output from relay to the input of high low switch. That's it! All the best😊

You have not converted ac to dc, you cut down the ac and connected to dc, this may lead battery low in long drive at night time.

That is actually called DC conversion as the complete electricals now runs on DC. I have been using this setup now for almost 4years and till date I have not faced any low battery issues as LED draws less power than Halogens, hope I was helpful 😊

very minor as my approach completely isolates the stock wiring so you are very sure you get minimum voltage drop

Well the stock bulb is 35/35w and this led is rated at 20w low and 30w high so it's well within the stock range and it does charge the battery enough

The resultant will be the same as there is one more wire which goes through to charge the battery, also it's not simple as rectify and connect, you will also need to use voltage regulator to control the voltage

How much should be the thickness of the battery positive wire? As the battery is under the seat in TVS scooters, so it is difficult to connect to the battery every time. So I am planning to extend the battery positive and negative to the front of the scooter and use it as the master positive wire for all mods in future. How thick a wire should I take for the positive and negative in that scenario? Thanks in advance :)

Nekib Ahmed that thickness will entirely depend on how much loaf you are going to put, I'm sure it won't be much , so under normal circumstances, 1sq mm or 1.5sq mm will be good for normal led mods, Also you don't need to take negative terminal all the way up, you can directly connect the negative terminal to the chasis of the bike. You can also take a positive terminal from the lock switch so that your mods will then work only when the key is turned on position

I did not understand exactly what you are saying. Your scooter does not have a battery, if that is what you are saying then you will need a RR unit and a battery. Other option is to use rectifier diode but then it will still be variable and alternating

I have a suzuki gixxer which came with a 3ah battery from factory. I replaced the battery with 4ah recently. I installed a 55w projector in my headlight with a relay harness. I replaced all my halogen bulbs in indicator and parking lamp with 0.5w leds. Rear tail lamp is led from factory. Do you think 4ah can power 55w headlight + led tail light? Please let me know your opinion. Also my bike is dc setup in stock form.

What kind of bulb have you put in the projector? If it's an HID or halogen then you will face battery drain issues. You will be on a safer side if you install led bulb in the projector which will even bring down the wattage as well as amperage.

Its not about wattage, it's about the current that the hid ballast draws during the start up process which is more than enough to drain your battery( in a couple of startups). It goes almost to 9amps peak . Other than that 12v 3ah will roughly have 36Wh but you want to dive deeper then you will also need to know power generated by your bike alternator to find out the proper wattage.

Bro y do u need a relay for this just disconnect the ac wire to the light switch and swap with a positive line which comes from the battery or u can loop from the front brake switch. I have done this 5 years ago and running with complete led setup without any issues till now

+RaJesh SinGh in that situation the 12v will be supplied to the headlights from the ignition switch through the bikes original wiring, which in most of the times has got more resistance, When you use relay, you bypass all that and become safe as the supply goes directly from battery straight to the bulb

So i have a Suzuki fiero, and it has no pilot lamp, just normal light switch. And here is the wiring info. Right Handle switch unit. 1. Yellow wire(light switch) - Comes from Regulator And goes to Pass switch. 2. Grey wire - Goes to Beam control switch on left handle bar and Also to Rear Tail light. The other two wires go to Ignition and CDI resp. LEFT handle switch unit. 1. One wire connects High beam switch to Headlight. 2.Another wire connects Low beam switch to Headlight. How do I install the relay now ? 😅

RaJesh SinGh cut the yellow wire so there is no current comming from alternator to the light on off switch and refer my video to pass a positive wire from key lock switch to this light switch, Now the output wire of the relay needs to be connected to one wire which goes to the high low switch which then passes the current to the selection made(high or low). Even if you use splice connector at the high low switch you will still have to cut the headlight on off switch wires completely to make the relay work. I would not recommend Doing it without using relay as that will make it unsafe

I guess in Bajaj super you don't have a battery. So this method will not work, you will need regulator rectifier and then install a battery first. It does not affect engine at all

No not everything, you will have to use the wires comming from the alternator as input to regulator/rectifier which will give you dc output which you can then use to charge the battery, once you do that , then you can follow this video

Not recommend at all, battery will drain and age quickly If using it in ac then they will not glow bright as they need more current than what activa can supply . Good LED bulb is the way to go if you need brightness
