I am surprised to find that most/all external slim drives only burn at 24x or read at 24x. People would make easy money selling premade 52x external dvd/blu ray writers.

I bought the same kit as you did for the blu-ray and have been happy with it so far just how long the electronic part will last . and I just put a HDD in a U-Green enclosure it works good but again for how long.

I've had good experiences with most adapters. (ie enclosures) lasting a long time. it will probably out live the HDD or the Br-Drive respectively. let me know if your experience changes.

I made the mistake of buying the mercury, which doesn't fit the larger drive, same exact as yours actually.

Ya. Originally I bought just a mercury and found out it didnt fit my long old Optical. So far Ive been happy with the Vantec

Although I enjoyed your video, the question that I had wasn't answered. I wanted to know if my brand new in box DVD-RW, that I bought awhile ago and never used, can now be converted to my brand new Dell Core i7 via USB??? My Dell has a DVD drive but it's very flimsy like the ones on a laptop. A shame to have this nice sturdy player sitting on the shelf doing nothing. Is it just a matter or buying the correct cable? Thanks in advance from Searsport, Maine 😁

I'm a little confused. Is the drive a desktop or Laptop size DVD optical drive. If its Laptop You probably could use a USB-Sata adapter and it should be able to provide enough power, and you would have an external DVD then. Note as far as i know they dont make enclosures for laptop dvd drives to be used externally If desktop class then what I did. If you want to use the drive internal to a computer (desktop) you just need the proper power and communications cable. Most newish (2012ish and new) dvd drives should be Sata power and cable. is this what you were after?

@@computer-tech-more I was running an old Gateway desktop pc playing World of War craft. When my drive started making strange noises I purchased a new DVD-RW just in case I needed it. This week I retired my old Gateway and plugged in my brand new Dell Optiplex i7. It's beautiful but the CD player is very flimsy. I spotted the unused drive on my shelf and wanted to know if, with the proper cable, it could be hooked up via USB somehow and used as an external drive? Thanks

@computer-tech-more Год назад
@@KF-vk7hi For external use you need an enclosure. The enclosure will have everything you need. As far as I know you cant really use the drive without an enclosure that has power and data cables in it.

Thinking of getting the OWC mercury pro enclosure, I’m using a apple Mac computer, how do I configure the new 5.25 cd drive, is it plug and play or is the OWC need new software for me to use it.

@computer-tech-more 6 месяцев назад
the enclosure is just plug and play. the CD drive might need drivers for the os, but that should be it. it should work with any USB compliant computer/ OS.

I have 2 different brand external hard drives (2006 HP model dvd1040 the old "lightscribe" version and 2018 LG M-DISC) right now that "sometimes" want to work with my Windows 10 desktop (I also don't have a internal CD/DVD-ROM built inside my computer). Having issues with Windows recognizing both of them most of the time, but when they do work they seem to quit working completely during transfer and the drive letter for the CD/DVD ROM has completely disappeared. Would buying these outer shell products USB 3.0 in your video make a difference and work correctly with my desktop, or would I have the same problem as the current external hard drives I have now? You'll have to forgive me, I'm not very savvy on computers like I used to be. But my current version of Windows is always updated daily and I don't use Blu-Ray just for reference. I already have internal CD ROM drives put away in my old computer supply box I gutted out from old computers I used to have. I purchased a "slimline" type CD/DVD ROM at Walmart and I'll admit it works for Windows 10, but all it does is scratch the discs everytime I used it due to the fact it's a "slim"line type and kinda flimsy. Took it back to Walmart, I don't care for "slimline" type ROMS anymore if all they're gonna do is scratch all the time. My old laptop rom drive did the same thing. Much appreciated. One of many reasons why I miss Windows 7, never had this issue until 10 came out. 10 sucks! I can only imagine Windows 11 is worse.

Ive had mixed results with slim Optical drives. Most dont seem to last. If windows isnt recognizing the drives its either something wrong within windows or soemthing wrong with the drive. Luckily if you want / need an optical you can buy a new one and up it into one of these shells. I think if I were you and needed the drives I would buy a shell see if that fixed the problem. If it didnt and I still need an optical just buy one to stick in it. If dont need the optical just return the shell. If its windows causing the problem I'm not giong to be much help. software is black magic to me. Personally i think the optical drive is on its last legs nearing end of life.

@@computer-tech-more I understand. I'm not much for the streaming world myself and I know it's been that way for awhile, but I'm 55 now and sticking with the old-fashioned ways of Windows 7 and below, getting more difficult to understand desktop computers these days since Windows 10's been out. I'll try the outer shell I noticed on Amazon Prime you posted in the link (the 46.00 one) and if it still doesn't work I can always return for a full refund, at least I tried. You're right about optical drives, they're like the ol' "floppies" that are extinct now, and I still have a bunch of floppies in my computer box going to waste. Currently, I'm "trying" to transfer my DVD TV shows to an external hard drive to connect to my smart TV without having to use a DVD player and wearing out my discs, but even that's getting difficult these days without Windows blocking my activity, or doing what "I" wanna do. Anyhoo, thanks again for the quick response my friend. Hopefully I can get something figured out if I keep tweaking Windows to get the ROM drive to work normal again. The many tutorials on You Tube I watched on disappearing CD ROMS and how to recover them never helped one bit. And thanks for this video as well, hope it works.

@@AmericanSoldierSioux1969 recovery is a little hard. I am no expert but you need a piece of software called MKVtoolnix it can rip move old dvd and BR then hand break to convert to easy format for home viewing. I could not explain how. I did it like 2 years ago shortly before making that video. havent done it since. I understand. but kind of old fashioned in some ways myself. I kept around the drives as a just in case. I even have a usb powered Floppy drive. haha I think searching How to rip my DVD's into google would get you what you want. hope this helps. :)

@@computer-tech-more I'll look into that software you mentioned (MKVToolnix), thank you. I forgot I can also buy a USB external floppy drive (if it works for "my" Widows 10, lol), they seem cheap enough. I'm glad I have Amazon Prime, lately I've been doing a lot of "returning" computer products because they're not compatible with Windows 10, or just being "stubborn" as Microsoft usually is (they seem to "pout" in Laymen's terms if they don't have their way I noticed). The way I do my DVD to external hard drive projects is, I start with DVD Decrypter (it still works since no updates since 2015) to unlock the copyright crap from my original DVD store-bought's. I purchased the TV series "Wagon Train" on DVD (yes, I'm that old, lol) but because it's an old B/W show you'd think they wouldn't have a copyright thing to it but they do. After I use DVD Decrypter, I open AVS Video Converter (lifetime license purchase) to covert from DVD files to .mp4 H.264 files to create a whole single episode and then transfer to my TV Shows 5TB external hard drive. Another reason why I do all this is because I HATE COMMERCIALS! LOL Even if you stream it after paying a monthly fee you still get commercials! What a rip-off, I quit all those streaming services after I discovered that. They ALL have commercials even if it's a "plus" version of it. I have a good collection of classic TV shows on that external hard drive, makes it a whole lot easier to watch on my smart TCL Roku TV with the USB connected in the back and using Roku Media Player to watch. But again, lately my CD ROM drive has been acting weird and seems to exist on Windows only when it wants to. I'm very tempted to put my computer back to factory settings which means I'd have to put all my programs and software back in again and I'd hate to do that. For me that a big headache. I haven't tweaked anything on my computer to make all this crap happened. Everything is just screwy lately. It's in "Twilight Zone" mode, lol. I've used Handbrake myself in the past but for some odd reason the decrypter part of it stays locked now and blocks my DVD's from being transferred because they're "copyrighted". And yet, the CSS decrypter.dll file I added for Handbrake is still in there, so I don't get it. I'm telling you, my computer's acting screwy lately. I know I don't have any viruses (at least I hope not since my virus protection said it was clean). So I removed Handbrake. I'm "assuming" Windows 10 is on to my little scheme and wants to take over, that's what it feels like. I guess Windows Privacy Policy is out the door.
