This video will guide you in how you can have confidence with getting your bird converted to parrot pellets. It also explains the mating behavior signs that your bird may display when you are touching them. Another behavior that you may see is called regurgitation which is when your bird appears to throw up food into their mouth. This is a mate/bonding/chick rearing act and sometimes touching their beak will encourage this.
My routine pellet conversion schedule includes feeding the new bird their previous BAD SEED & by 3PM I take it out and offer the pellets and another round of fresh foods. The bird has had a full breakfast and will be ready for a snack 4 to 6 hours later thus around 3PM. As the video explains, they may not touch it or throw it out. By 8PM, I take out the pellets and fresh foods and give them back the BAD SEED. I don't want to but during this transition and a new home, I don't want any extra stress nor for them to lose weight. During the two weeks or a similar time-frame, I have 100% success in getting them to try the pellets during that afternoon time.
They aren't SUPER hungry because they had their BIG SEED MEAL earlier BUT they want a snack after 4 or 6 hours and may decide to explore this new healthy option. Observation is key whenever you are home, if you are gone 8 or 10 hours a day and there is no-one in the household to check on the parrot and switch out the food bowls, frankly you may want to re-think getting a bird. They should not be alone for hours and hours in a cage with no social enrichment.
I eventually switch the seed to a higher quality, in my case canary seed worked VERY well. I know, weird for a larger bird but Tawny spends "bizzy" work searching for those little seeds to appease her seed addiction she has been on all her life. Additionally, I pop in and out of the bird room with different fresh food bowls throughout the day. I hope this helps you understand that the parrot pellet transition. It can be done, each bird will be different and as always consult your avian vet with more concerns.
This is a process of maintaining their weight and old diet and once they are happy and adjusted, we start eliminated the bad and give them no choice during the afternoons to venture out to see what those pellets are! And don't forget to try all sizes and brands!!! You will find one they will eat. I don't buy the saying "my bird won't eat pellets." Watch for exciting pellet eating consumption such as pellets dipped in the water bowl, pellets that are ground up and on the bottom of the cage, & of course if you visually see them crunching away.
