A good idea for a future video is about HEX-editing the default.xbe - to make 4:3 games into native 16:9 widescreen. It's really easy and so worth it!!!

who knows... all I know is, that these codes also work if you have a game that has a 480p fixed xbe-file. Like Darkwatch - you can play now in 480p (instead of 480i) and in widescreen! I just hope somebody give a little love to Football :-( and make a hex code for "Pro Evolution Soccer 4" !!

Your videos have inspired me to dig out my trusty old 1.6 Xbox and softmod it. I took it apart a few days ago to clean everything. Thankfully I don't have to worry about the clock cap. I'm going to use the Splinter Cell method since I can't do a TSOP flash with my board. Sadly my DVD drive wouldn't read discs anymore. I was kinda bummed since it was a Hitachi drive and those are supposed to be more reliable. Thankfully though a friend of mine was getting rid of 3 Xboxes plus a bunch of accessories, so I swapped a Philips DVD drive into my Xbox, and everything is back up and running again. I forgot how much I missed this console.

I had so much fun experimenting with the XBOX back in the days.. People like you have inspired people like me to always learn more, diversify and master that diversity, and give the gift of giving itself. Thank you for your contributions! I recall one of the popular dashboards had a creepy picture of a black-eyed kid. Have you seen it? If so, where can I find that again?? I'm going to build the debug box. I still have my XBOX stash and now I have a hot air rework station, so adding the RAM will be a snap. Time to dig out the ol' Xecuter 3 mod chip and my special version of Mech Assault. It's time to play with this hobby again. BTW - I didn't know that a hard drive could be locked at the firmware level until I got into this stuff. What a really neat thing to know and add to the concept of digital privacy.

Did you do it, I always wanted to mod our Xbox & just never did & then everything moved on. Finally got some junkers off ebay last summer & fumbled my way through softmodding before finally trying the modchips, kept seeing people saying how softmodding is the easier option, but I have no fking idea what the fk they were talking about, the softmod fucked up twice the first 2 attempts, random parts of it's process just not executing. Went ahead & soldered the necesary points to flash the BIOS, 5 minutes later, fully modded xbox, first attempt, running UnleashX, been wanting to do the RAM upgrade as I like it as an emulation station, but I really need more micro soldering experience before I'm going to chance that.

This was really interesting to watch. I knew about this and I remember when I modded my Xbox I was about to purchase two memory chips. Eventually I skipped this as I had virtually zero experience on soldering and didn't want to ruin my machine. I assume soldering those chips would make 100% "original" dev kit? I mean that would have to be easiest dev kit conversion ever? Afaik every other platform have generally speaking very exotic hardware. I'm not programmer but always been fascinated about it. Thanks anyway for the video.

Question, is it possible to add additional 64mb of RAM to a retail xbox? 128mb of RAM, if even usable for games, would be a huge advantage for frametimes and framerate in some cases. Games like Half-Life 2 struggle to maintain even 20 FPS in some scenes and RAM is probably a huge factor in this.

On that note, the CPU is also upgradeable. It can be upgraded from the stock 733 CPU to 1GHZ or 1.4GHZ. Games weren't designed with faster CPU's in mind, so some are buggy or play too fast (in some cases that can be remedied by patching the game to lock it to 733mhz). I recently bought a 1GHZ motherboard with 128MB of RAM and I'm loving it.

I was a prominent member of the ASSEMbler forum years back and helped with a few projects. One thing I was told but never checked myself was that beyond the 64 vs 128 MB RAM difference between retail and other consoles like debug, dev, and Chihiro there was one other difference all 128 MB boards had. The system security. I was told retail had an extra security bit the 128 MB boards did not have thus meaning the debug BIOS could not be direct loaded on retail due to lack of code for the security bit. Either the Phoenix BIOS Loader gets around this or that bit is not true. Someone here with more experience in OG Xbox coding care to set me straight on this? Just curious. I had a debug console for some time but never compared the BIOS files.

I love your videos. I don't always know what you are talking about. I'm more of a hardware man than software. Need a mod chip installed or cool lighting, I can do that. Need the tx chip replaced, no problem. Soft modding, writing code, its like beating my head with a brick. I've modded a bunch of Xboxes over the years and I apparently used a lot of emulators you made. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the original Xbox. One night at a Halo CE LAN at my house we played on four Halo Edition Xboxes that I had modded. Yes, it was cool. I miss those days, back when I was 49, ten years ago. ;)

you mentioned "Turning off your xbox will revert you to a retail system" I'm assuming this means reverting back to the UnleashX/Softmod dash, correct? If yes, any way to have the system autoboot to the debug dash?

Me too! Did you ever manage to fix it? Having done some research it appears it's the version of the BIOS I've been using that doesn't support my video chip. AFAIK the 'Complex' one shown in the video only supports Conexant video chips which were used in the older versions of the original XBOX's whereas later ones used the 'Focus' video chip. I'm still trying to find a version of the BIOS that supports the Focus video chip machines.

Does this work on v1.6 xbox's? I tried it on mine a few years ago and was able to get into the XDK dash just fine, the only thing that I couldn't get working (arguably the most important thing to have working) was network connectivity on the debug IP :L
