At the same time I was building my van my brother also wanted to convert the garage into a living space for his family. For the budget he had to work with he came up with this. Hope you enjoy.

a simple solution for the camera pans would be a sting attached to the bottom of the camera. you can just stand on it when you are filming and lightly pull the camera up to hold it steady. you are mobile and the pans will look much better

Sweet suite! I'm sure I'm not the only one who was wondering where all the stuff went. My guess is a big yard/garage sale with the proceeds going towards the project. What say you?

Love the converted garage....I also see where you have space to add a closet or small bedroom downstairs. You can also add a wall on the baby space for privacy. Beautiful conversion and a good source of extra income. Kudos to you all.

I think the bedroom/bathroom should be on the far side from the house and the kitchen living area on the house side of the garage for more privacy. Then a sliding glass patio door for the living to bring in lots of light and no door or small window for the bedroom.

Hey! Nice work. I am considering the feasibility of a similar project. I have a late 1940's single-car detached garage, with a workshop area. The supports/studs, it seems, are similar to what were present in this project. Being that it was owner-built so the spacing is somewhat random. I'm curious how much work went into that and how much you were able to just leave. Also - were any of the plumbing connections present? Mine has one floor spigot plumbed under concrete, and no sewer outlet. Also same concrete floor, below or at grade and the original wiring which blows a house circuit if more than one heater is on anywhere else. ha. Curious how you covered the floor too. This is much longer than I had intended to write - but whatever. A little color would be nice - you might've left SOME natural wood for warmth... that's a lot of primer to cover all of that raw lumber to get it white - I'll bet your father was thrilled. Paint drywall, not solid wood. wink - have a good day, sorry so many questions. Mike Seattle=LosAngeles-Seattle again. Scorpio

I stumbled into this video. California changed the permitting process for ADU’s starting in 2020. I am interested in converting a large room in the house as a separate rental. Will add a kitchen and bathroom. I don’t want to spend more than 15K. This conversion appears to be the same size as my large room with vaulted ceiling. I’m unlikely to make a loft.

How long and how much did this conversion cost? Was it all DIY or contractors involved? My garage is similar to this with a loft already and planning to convert it to a tiny house.
@JarrodTocci

Brother and father did it all so saved on contracts as father is a contractor. Not including permits I believe the cost was $15-20k

I am closing on my first house in a week, it has 1170 sqft with 3 bed rooms 2 bath (one is the master bath but kind of small) and it has a detached garage 375 sqft, but I think that is the outside dimensions and I want to do exactly what you have done. I've been thinking about it for a few years but never made any real thought in how it would all fit together. I am so happy that I looked it up and found this video. I know there is electric going to the garage but no water. I want to put an electrical box in and have a fridge and washer dryer hot water tank. I am hopping that I can live there and rent the room of the house. How would I go about getting the pluming and electricity, how much could I expect to spend
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci 5 лет назад
Some good questions. Depending on city and state you can only do certain things with a detached garage (unless you're not pulling permits). You can tape water and electricity from the main house. Or you can make it a "off grid cabin" but you'd probably have to use solar for that. Cost can be anywhere from $15-30k if you're doing it yourself but obviously much more if you're hiring a contractor or others

Did you have to get a permit or something to change it from a garage to apartment? I live in Cicero, just out of Chicago. My garage looks the same. I have a disabled son and want to give more independence.
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci 5 лет назад
Yes you will have to check with your city and pull permits for doing any type of construction on a home. Always best to keep it legal. If you hire a contractor they typically will get all the paperwork done. Just make sure you do the research on each contractor and read reviews

He did put plumbing in. But he also considered just using a composting style toilet. Still would need to drain the shower somehow though. The plumbing was probably the hardest part

Any info on how the carriage doors were designed?
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci 5 лет назад
Pretty much 3/4" plywood and 2" insulation then I believe pine boards painted white all to make it look like a barn door. I think all hardware was bought off Amazon. I know the doors were heavy when done
