With the additional of another family member, we had to add another room in our house. The only place left was the garage and we didn't have a lot of time. Anyone that can use a tape measure and can use general power tools can easily pull this job off like I did!
It cost around $700-1000. This number was including everything (materials, furniture, lights, etc), so it can change pretty easy as you may already some of the items.

This is awesome man. But for ANYONE WATCHING definitely install a carbon monoxide monitor if you are going to put a room in your garage. Since its proximity is so close to your car, this room would be the most vulnerable.

@@debrasalinas2831 I understand, but the only vehicle that parked inside was my 1963 VW bus that doesn't get driven much and when I do it gets hand pushed into the garage.

I agree with you on the sensor, that would make it safe, but I wouldn’t worry too much since you need a car to be running for quite a while to fill the garage with cm, and the garage seems to have windows too… but better safe than sorry.

Well a welder, carpenter, plumber where never born as one. They just started picking up the tools and making it happen. Today could be the day you pick that first tool up and make it happen!!

Hopefully I gave enough information to help you out. Another option is a portable building in back yard (depending on your location of course). You can make some nice rooms out of them if needed... plus give you and him more personal space if needed.

It’s so cool how you kept everything within codes for your area because even though she’s an exchange student the company or place that does do placement for exchange students would have to make sure that the room is within code and that is in safe conditions too so I am a very impressed I’m gonna be doing a build on the back edge of our garage it’s gonna be at least 8 foot or more front to back of the garage and then roughly over 25 feet and it’s gonna be turned into a hydroponics room and I think your ideas are right on spot right on this is for an amateur carpenter electrician and plumber jack of all trades master of none and former apprentice in construction I love working with wood and construction is so much fun and the smell of the wood is rewarding or I should say intoxicating to me

Excellent job man. I'm going to do this for my wife as well, only less space and will have to make it lower for clearance of the garage door. Not a problem, just intimidated by the slight slope that you mentioned. Anyway, great vid!

I was thinking about making part of it short to go under the door and make that area a closet. That way you get the space, but wouldn't notice it very much being a closet. The slope isn't bad... you just have to custom cut each stud on the one wall. Thanks for watching!

You can get a storage box 📦 the same length to that desk you build with cushion on top to sit as bench and to storage her stuff and use ceiling space if possible to add shelves and if have under bed space buy those storage thinggy that you push under bed for more storage to put her stuff... perhaps you did that already! 👋

Those are some great ideas. This room was only built as a temporary room for my exchange student. She didn't have very much stuff, but if your gonna make it a permanent room then yes I would have added more storage.

Just design it out on paper first, measure twice and cut once and if your having any kind of motorized item in there add a detector like I did to be safe! Most of all have fun and if you have any questions let me know!

@@watsonst04 thank you my husband is an electrician. So he's definitely going to wire in a carbon monoxide/ fire detector. We close on our house soon and I need a room to make merchandise. We weren't sure how hard or what it would be. Nice work man. Just bought a property that my sister and daughters live in, and I'm building an apartment in my shop for myself. Place is amazing. Sealing the concrete then building the walls. Bathroom is there, just adding a shower and hot water heater, then turning the already built office into a kitchen. My bedroom will be roughly 17x12. I did have a good bit of demo work considering it's a shop in a rural area...small woodland critters, with a bad case of the shits. What a mess that was...legit, full face plexy gas mask, hooded cover and shit kickers that went to my knees. It was bad in the beginning.

Simple is usually best. This is similar to my garage project coming up for my utility room. I already have water pipes. I just want my WD enclosed in a nice room. I have a huge attached garage. 22’x34’.

Great video, very inspiring! Just curious about a few things: Would there be any reason to add a subfloor for more insulation? Did you frame out and insulate the other walls too? How come you came into the room a bit on the left side of the desk? My wife and I just bought a house with a big 2 car garage and I think I’ll do something like what you’ve done here. Here in Texas we don't normally add a subfloor when you have concrete floors. When my house was built I made them insulate the outside walls as well to help regulate the garage (I spend a lot of time out there). The two walls that was already there are outside walls that where built when the house was built; therefore I only had to add the 2 walls. The area where the desk, was a feature of the house where the window area "popped out" giving a architectural look on the outside. Thanks for watching!!

Family members really need an extra bedroom, so I'm researching how to do something low budget. Can you tell me approximately what you spent on materials? Did you create a material list that you can share? Thank you! It turned out beautifully!!!

I didn't do a materials list. Basically you need to measure your walls length (lets say you have 2x 10' walls). So you'll need 4x 10' boards for the top and bottom plate, and divide 10' by 16" = 7.5 (each wall) So you'll need 16 boards to make walls (studs). For each door or window in the new wall add 2 or 3 studs to make the opening and header for the top. Being you have 20' of wall you'll need 5x pieces of plywood for the outside and 5x paneling for the inside at a minimum. Hopefully that makes sense, if not let me know.

We just added a portable unit to the room. You could easily add a window unit if you wanted.

Favorite part... The rustic wooden walls. I am gonna need to convert my garage to two rooms for my twins to have since they're getting older and they want privacy. I think I can make 2 8X16's or 8X14's... gotta measure when I get home.

It really wasn't that hard. Like most things proper planning made this project an easy one. When I looked at my garage I had to plan the walls while keeping mind of where the electric plugs where and windows. Once that was done it was smooth sailing.
