Decided to do the inconvenient thing and convert my 1979 Harley Davidson Shovelhead to and open belt primary with a foot clutch and suicide/jockey shift motorcycle.

Very cool mod there Tramp. Reminds me of my early days. I learned to ride on a 42 "45", hand shift foot clutch. But the clutch was a stay put rocker clutch. So a bit different. That was my own bike. I rode everything my friends would let me on. My first ride on a Triumph was a right side foot shift. Same as the early Harley Sportsters, and K models. I learned to adjust to what ever I rode in minutes back in the 50's. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story. Once you get the sequence down you will be able to start that thing with one or two kicks. My old flat head would start on one or two kicks almost all the time. But they only had like 6.5 to 1 compression.

I converted my Roadstar to foot clutch/jockey shift. Thought it was cool but after several rides I realized just how dangerous it really is. After a couple close calls (panic situations) it definitely lost it's novelty. Two legs on the ground is definitely better than one.

Back on a bike after 20yr absence. Got an old FLH with evo motor. To slow myself down (skill no longer matches old riding habits) I’ve gone with a jockey shift setup and I’m lovin it. I find that I’m totally involved in every ride and every ride is an adventure…whether I want one or not (lol). To slow down the clutch engagement I played a lot with the location of the linkage connection on the pedal. By moving the attachment point closer to the pivot the length of pedal sweep during engagement increased. Took a bit of fiddling about but optimizing the stroke and position of the pedal really made it more fun to ride.

I have a similar setup on my Shovel. One secret is to make sure your clutch pedal is positioned so your foot can be securely on the footpeg when using the clutch and you just rock the angle of your foot on the peg to operate the clutch. A big mistake is to set up the clutch so your foot has to be OFF the peg to use the clutch, I've seen a few guys do it like that until they learned better lol.

I have to agree with the Misses. On the topic of losing your mind? Maybe. Or are you suffering from heat stroke? The idea of an exposed belt, Not for me. So I have to ask. Isn't riding in traffic dangerous enough without making it more difficult to ride?

Glad you did this Saddle Tramp. I'm thinking of doing this to my shovelhead. Keep up the good work brother. Make sure you keep the videos coming. I appreciate the fact that there's a fellow believer in Jesus who rides some righteous iron. It goes to show that just because we're Christians doesn't mean we have to be boring. I believe the Lord Jesus would've ridden a chopper if he could have. Peace Bro.

Hahaha man thats awesome 👏 This video makes me so happy actually and almost makes me want to covert my shovel 😅 Luckily though my dad will be doing the jockey shift thing on his own shovel so I'll get some practicing in on that and don't HAVE to convert mine 😏 Also still feel that same sense of joy that I get when my one bike finally starts after a struggle by watching others get theirs going finally after too many kicks hahah Good vid Corey! Hope you're having fun with the new setup!

The first motorcycle (a 1950 FL) that I rode had a tank shift (shift gate) and a rocker clutch. I also rode a pre-WWII Knuck with a suicide clutch and jockey shift. It took me a little time to get accustomed to that clutch/shift setup. After a few days, actuating the clutch and shifting gears was as easy as falling off a log. I didn't have any real problems except sitting at a stop light or stop sign on a steep hill. I didn't run a front brake. Have fun. Be safe. -- W

According to the poster when you have no front brake, it's called a suicide clutch, not a foot clutch. I actually think it's a suicide clutch no matter what, and the shifter is called a jockey shift, not a suicide shift.

I don’t know what poster your referring to but slang for “suicide shift” is just jockey shift. The suicide part is a myth from lurching out into traffic. When in reality your bike just stalls. Idk 🤷‍♂️ I call it jockey shift.

One thing you got to watch out for not just that compression stroke kick to come back on you, but especially with the cow pies you location get a dead kick. We're almost feels like a put the clutch in that kick his ass wants to swim down to the ground on its. And it never happens first kick it's always have you been kicking it 10 times bitching this thing won't turn over and all the sudden.

Good video and I'm happy to see your shovel undergoing a "devolution." My first Harley was what was left of a '51 Panhead with the real suicide setup,(rebound clutch pedal, jockey shift, and no front brake,) and it was a kick in the ass to ride For years I've been wanting to convert my '72 ElectraGlide to a tank shift/foot clutch setup, and since I'm in the middle of restoring it, it's an opportune time. I've had the bike since 1980, and 6yrs ago I finally warmed up to the Evo enough to buy a '97 WideGlide to give it a break. Thanks for posting this and ride safe.👍

Also My pan has a mallory uni light an super e/shorty e. Whatever, people get too hung up on nonclementure. Any way its a genuine 1 kick bike. 1 kick means 1 kick. No prime kicks, whick the throttle 3 or 4 times, quarter choke(yeah yeah, enricher) crack throttle slight bit n kick. It does start. Has a small hydro cam, an andrews h grind. Looking good, it does change your relationship with your bike. I bought what I considered my last bike in 1998, had wanted this one since I was working in a small shop in Texas in the late 70's. Used to tune and test ride Pans, liked the look of the engines but too slow. So now I ride my 88" stroked Pan in a 1981 FXE chassis, kick only, foot clutch with jockey shift on a ratchet top, 3" open belt primary, Progressive suspension front and rear, this bike suits me fine. But I made a mistake, I've gotten old, don't do it! 😎 Gets harder to kick start them in your mid 70's! So, realizing this I found a electric start Sportster at an estate sale a few years ago, some assembly required with a steep learning curve since I know nothing about them. But it cost much less than fitting electric start on the Pan. Back to this video, look up Grease's Garage on the tube, he has a couple of good videos that I watched recently. Check out: How to build a jockey shift foot clutch for a rotary top, also: Foot clutch setup, and: How to ride a jockey shift foot clutch motorcycle. Wish I had watched these years ago, there is more good stuff on his channel also. Don't let people without personal experience change how you live your life. Everybody has a different comfort zone, I used to race through the woods and jump anything that didn't get out of the way on my trail bike and converted motocross bikes. Didn't wear a helmet for over 30 years (wouldn't now but I moved into a backward state), used to ride on the highway at night on my 77 Kawasaki 1000 at speed laying back looking at the stars for miles at a time, still alive and in one piece. A modification I've seen recommended (can't give credit since I can't remember who, might have been Pacific Mike or Tatro) that I am looking to do on mine is a short heel rest to help control the foot clutch engagement. Hope you like your new setup as much as I like mine, yes, the bigger the crowd the harder they are to start, enjoy!

Hey that's a Great looking set-up. I'd like to tell you a short story here, I was getting a Bultaco racing bike set-up for a friend one day many moons ago. While I was working on the bike another friend kept ask me to let him ride the bike, my answer was always the same, NO it's not my bike. Finally two things happen at once, I finish the bike, and the owner came in to the shop at the same time. The other friend (Jeff) was still there, when running up to the owner and begged him to ride the bike, (Richard) said Ok Jeff. I known Jeff all of his life, and I know he had never rode a Bultaco before, (Bull's have a right foot shifter) and I reminded Jeff of that, he just looked at me and said I Know that. He put the bike in first, hit the gas, and lees than 100 feet later, ran into a Staircase Landing. Completely totaling the front end of that Bike. As I watch this, Jeff was stomping on the gear shifter like a mad man, he had done forgotten what he was ridding. Cory Man you've got a lot of bikes, So Man don't never forget which one your riding. My shovel always leaps forward when I drop it in first gear. Grab the front brake and hold on. So good thing you got front brakes. You will need it with that set up. Good luck and be careful. I still try to shift on right sometimes cause I have a right side shift iron. Muscle memory.

Yeah, I wasn't going to go that route without front brakes.

I ran an open belt drive suicide shift on my shovel for years. I had both ratchet top and manual top at different times, I liked the manual top better because you have a neutral between each gear. A front brake is almost mandatory…

Agreed... Front brake is a must

I make al my bikes kick only and have a few hand shifters. Recently i installed a rocker clutch setup on one of them and its so more nice and easier shifting, taking off as the regular pedal!! With the rocker clutch it is much more like how you do it in the car and for a stop your clutch stays engaged when you have your foot off :). Gonna swap en all fo a rocker

I'm really thinking about going to kick start only on my 88 Softail. My only concern is cold weather this winter.

If you're going to keep your solid state ignition, you might want to keep your electric start and just add a kickstarter.
