So I wanted to convert my now 12v car to run the original 6v semaphores.
If it’s specifically the semaphores then I tested and determined that a 1ohm, 50w, wire-wound aluminium resistor is great for the task. The semaphore pops up at a good sensible speed, and the bulb has enough power to operate clear and bright.
I suggest you mount these resistors to a plate of aluminium or steel, this helps to keep them cool and dissipate the heat. Whilst semaphores are only usually on for a small amount of time , they should still be mounted to assist with heat dissipation .
The 4ohm version from BBT is way to strong and potentially suited for the wiper motor.
Link to buy , as of Jan 2023 is (1ohm!):

The flashing bulbs are made in 6v and 12v, found on eBay. If your semaphores are 6v (like mine), you need the 6v bulbs!

Hello, So you need either 6v or 12v flashing led semaphore specific bulbs. If your semaphores are actually 6v ones, then get 6v bulbs. If they are the modern 12v reproductions, then get 12v bulbs. Here’s one type , there’s a few on eBay : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283301879454?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=DDRns-FdTSK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=AV7gEowcSUi&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

@@griceyboy Appreciated; thank you for your time. I'm still old school type, I want to use my semaphore lights with flashing relays. can you help with that, with a diagram perhaps, I brought semaphore 12volts from Heritage as my 1956 Beetle is converted to 12 volts. I brought Tridon Thermal Flasher - TF122PAC. The Battery used in the car is 56AH 12V, would this be enough to raise the semaphore and flash the light (L/R) is my question. on the diagram it shows one Flasher Relay will do both Left and Right :)

@@ferniesella3604 hello, so you can’t use a flasher relay on a semaphore, that would make the semaphore in theory just go up and down quickly , which it won’t as it’s mechanical and it just won’t work. You honestly just need these very clever 12v Vw beetle semaphore flashing led bukbs. These are the only thing that will work, 60 second job to install each one and they are clever - so they allow the semaphore to rise, then they flash, it’s all built into the circuit board on the bulb itself. They have a light either side of the board so you get light on both sides of the sem lense. A relay won’t work and isn’t needed in this instance. Just buy these modern tech bulbs. As a note, most LEDs only work one way, so install the bulb , try it, if no light, then reverse the bulb. They are great and £15 usually for a pair. Job done :)

@@ferniesella3604 the modern 12v semaphores are good, I had a set in my Oval about 5-6 years ago and they were lovely. 12v ones are best, it’s the 6v ones that struggle to rise unless everything in the circuit is clean and good condition. Great stuff , get the bulbs ordered :).
