Love the reality check of how your kids *actually* use the grass. I live on a tiny urban lot. My yard is too small to play soccer and other stuff much anyway! We live a few blocks away from an elementary school with a large field.

Great video! I was specifically looking for a how-to on growing native grass plugs. Where do you buy those plug trays?

Great video, shoutout to team Little Bluestem! I just converted my front lawn to prairie, it was so much work! But I'm super excited to see the benefits to th elocal pollinators in the years to come.

I’ve been doing exactly this! Growing Buffalo grass plugs, wooly thyme and clover. My area I’m fixing is deep gravel that holds so much heat and makes us need too much air conditioning. I’m using biodegradable grow bags that are deep. Also doing both plugs and seed.

Are you using buffalo or another native clover instead of the invasive Eurasian white clover?
@barbaravanerp4598
@barbaravanerp4598 9 месяцев назад
@@frenchpotato2852 I initially started with Dutch clover. Wished I’d used a different one but we are all learning. Yarrow and thyme are my new choices and not sure of thyme is native but it’s edible and pretty

@@frenchpotato2852 Buffalo grass and I mixed in Dutch clover, wholly thyme and white yarrow. Wished I’d not used that particular clover but…it’s filling g in very nice

It's pretty hard to get native clover seed, and if you can get it, it's quite expensive. I'm on the West Coast and I've been trying to grow native species for the last couple of years and it can be hard. Slugs preferentially devour the seedlings, also most of our species are annual and many don't occupy the same niches as the more commonly available Eurasian clovers. For example I found that I could not grow a native species I was working with in my compacted clay. If Buffalo clover is native for you I would try to get that, but it's a process! It's still better than a conventional lawn.

do you have any update on your native grass effort from last year? I'd love to see how well it worked as I'm thinking of doing something similar. Thank you

How long do you leave the fabric on top of the seed?

Thank you so much for posting this! It was SO HELPFUL! It have found a lot of info online about converting full acres and then also how to make very small native gardens for your house, but not much for the 'in between' size like what you did, which is what I am wanting to do, so thank you for doing this!

Thanks so much for your video! Just want to mention that your Sure Roots plug trays are 50s, not 72s.

You’re right, I’m so used to using 72s for standard everything but these are 50s, thanks!!

I noticed your gravel paths are extremely clear of weeds. I know you don’t like fabric for garden beds, but did you do anything to prevent plant growth in your walkways?

Early weeding and often weeding! I also keep my paths blown off so organic matter and seeds don’t accumulate there.
