Converting Fixie Back To Geared Bike

I bought a nice Koga Miyata race bike, that unfortunately had been converted to a fixie. I don't mind fixed geared bikes, but this seemed like a waste of a nice vintage race bike. So I decided to convert it back to have more gears. Originally the bike would have been 14 speed, but I updated to 20 speed (2x10) with Shimano 105 components. This video covers pretty much the whole build. The bike is a 1992 Koga Miyata Exerciser.
The wheels are Shimano WH-RS10's.

Great build again, the only thing that´s disturbing me is the massive black crank on that light frame.

I'm a bike mechanic with over 25 years experience. Thank you so much for doing this. If I had the opportunity and money, I would do the similar thing to this. Although I would have gone with some older parts like Shimano 600 or maybe a 105 5500 group set with a octalink crankset. Glad to see you using torque wrenches. I've seen too many young people who don't. I've seen people damage parts by over tightening. Looks good. Thank you.

The bike looks great. Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video and other on your channel. It has shown me enough to make me want to do my own bike maintenance and purchase a starter tool-kit. Also, convinced me that I am capable enough to upgrade the components of my 2002 Fuji, which will be my winter project.

Its not just for austetics. If you want to convert a bike to a travel bike that will fit into under 62 linear inch liggage for airline transport to avoid hefty bike fee charges you MUST have a steel or titanium frame to retrofit S & S Couplers to split the frame in half. RJ built this bike up nicely with modern components. Its expensive but for about $700 he can get #2 couplers brazed on this bike. Would be worth it if you fly quite a bit and want to bring your bike everywhere you go.

Awesome video, RJ. I wish I had this video when I was updating my 1988 Fuji Del Rey. I used 105 parts except for the brakes and shifters. I used Centos Microshift and am very pleased with them - every bit as good as the 105s. People do a double-take when they see me ride my upgraded 80s bike - old and new on one bike. :) The triple butted steel frame is so silky smooth and shifts like a dream with new components. Only my fully carbon Domane is smoother - but only just by a little. Cheers and keep up the outstanding work. I've learned nearly everything about bike mechanics from your channel!

Don't be shallow. Riding fixed gear is challenge, if you ever try and actually learn to ride one, you will come back and delete your comment. I also hate attention whores that ride a fixed gear around the block, going slower than my grandma, but undertaking a 100km ride through hills and towns is completely another thing. A track cyclist can easily ride a geared freewheel, but road cyclist will need at least a few weeks to ride a track bike ;) Take care.
