Lynne loved to hear you had your helper pushing the peddle for you just like I did. Those speedy valves are the ticket for sure. Wish I had them when I did my brakes.
So far so good for me too! Several of my local British car owner friends also have been running DOT5 also with no problems. In fact, I honestly don’t personally know anyone who had a hydraulic failure based upon DOT 5 fluid! All rumor and innuendo it seems. I also flush the hydraulics and coolant every 2 years anyway..
I just ran across this. Last year I had my TR6 in a local british car shop for some carb work, and for some reason they decided to bleed my brakes. There was faded lettering from the prev owner where he wrote DOT 5, but they put in DOT 3. They had never heard of using DOT 5, which killed me. I made him put DOT 5 back in and gave them a bottle, but it is obvious that they only bled one chamber of the res. The prev owner has had the same fluid in for a decade or so LOL. I need to re-bleed mine.
Hi again John You should pick up a set of those easy bleed brake nipples. I forgot the part number but it’s in that same RU-vid video. What a difference they make! I’ve been getting the TR4A ready to drive to the Kas Kastner race next weekend at Pitt raceway👍 Regards, Dave
Was it no problem to get all the dot 3 out of your system?? Dot 5 floats on dot 3. I am afraid that with bleeding, what is done at the highest point, you won’t get it all out. The top is where air collects BUT thats not where dot 3 is… I am preparing to do what you have done, but that’s my only question. Thanks for the speedbleeder tip.
Hi Olav, Thanks for the comment. I haven’t had any issues with the brakes or the clutch since I switched to DOT 5. A couple of things I think are important is that first you have to be very careful to not introduce air into the fluid. Don’t just pour the DOT 5 fluid in the reservoir, stick a screw driver in the reservoir and slowly let the fluid run down the screw driver. I let that sit overnight lust to make sure there was no air suspended in the fluid. Next, use a vacuum bleeder vs pumping the pedal. I think it reduces the chances of leaving DOT 3 in the system. Finally, I flush the brakes and clutch every 2 years which will let me keep a eye on things. One other thing.. when you get ready to make the switch, suck as much DOT 3 out of the master cylinder reservoir before adding any DOT 5 and don’t forget to pour it S L O W L Y to minimize air suspended in the DOT 5. And try and find a set of those speed bleeder. They are great, Let me know how it goes. Dave
@@DavesTR4A thanks for the tips about avoidance of air introduction, and first sucking dot 4 out of reservoir. I’m about to start the job, but temp it too low to first respray my damage I’ll also have to do. Greatings from Holland, a triump spitfire :-)
@@OlavBergman I think you will be OK with the conversion to DOT 5. I would recommend you replace your bleeder valves wit a set of those Russell Speed Bleeders. I bought mine on Amazon.
I’ve got a classic mini that I bought with DOT5 already in it, and the master cylinder is in need of replacement due to failed seals. Forum tells me the cause IS the dot 5 and to make sure I get it all out when I replace the MC. You think it would be worth replacing the DOT 5 or just keep using it?
Hi Anthony, Thanks for The comment. I haven’t had any issues with my brakes since I switched to DOT 5. My clutch and brake master cylinders are both Girling parts and I am guessing yours are too. Two other points: 1. If either master cylinders start to leak, your paint is safe. 2. I heard the save warning and so far so good. I always flush the coolant and hydraulic fluids every other year just to keep on top of any possible issues. Maybe you have noticed that this whole DOT 3/ DOT 5 controversy is a real hot button issue. Ask 4 people what they think and 2 will DOT 3 and 2 will go DOT 5. Dave
That's funny- what will those same folks say when your master cyl leaks witht DOT3 or 4? Oh, then it's the poor quality reproduction part, right? You posted 5months ago, but I hope that you stayed with the DOT5.
