Another good one Charlie! I hadn’t realised you could get separate decoder sockets. On my recent conversion of an old A4 I just hardwired the decoder. Mind you, I can’t imagine forking out over a hundred quid to fit sound to such an old model at a later date. Your videos convinced me to convert to DCC and it certainly adds a new dimension. If only it was easier to source sound decoders for British locos in Europe. My last order is still stuck waiting for customs clearance since 20th December and that’s par for the course :(

Well done Charlie - interesting to see the DCC "loss" measured in this way. Of course as you showed, the power output is not the whole story, the slow running, post-DCC upgrade, was infinitely better. That original HST livery was just so very photogenic! have a good weekend. FWIW: I thought the things you called "India Tags" were called "Treasury Tags" - that's what we used to ask our admin to get when we needed some.

I guess it is one of those things named differently in different places. They were treasury tags as I knew them too.

This is a great clean install in a vintage locomotive. I love being able to revive some of these older motors at bargain prices. I've had great luck with a similar item over here - Decoder Buddy. Makes installation of sound decoders in older locos very simple. Thanks again for a great lesson!

Thanks Charlie, this and the last video have shown that it’s possible to bring old models into the modern world, and let’s face it - people of our “vintage” have all got models from our earlier days that are getting a bit tired (probably like us 🤣) ! I’ve also got modern HSTs but still got my old Hornby ones that I saved my paper round money for and hence, while they’re not as detailed as the modern ones, they are nonetheless special to me. So I;m going to give this a go and see if I can get my old 253 001 and 253 007 running on Pevenbourne. Not sure what iTrain will make of them though ! Take care Charlie.

Hat off to you, Charlie. I find it hard enough just soldering small objects without trying to do it, so the camera gets a good view. Great video showing you don't always need to buy new when updating your layout.

There is actually an alternative to soldering on those tiny solder tabs, there are metallic paint pens you can buy on ebay which actually glue the wire to the solder tab, alot easier and more accurate than solder tips.

Another excellent video Charlie, a very enjoyable and educational production. I can’t wait to get started on my dc to dcc conversion. I must say the shopping list is growing though; decoders, 8 pin sockets, light units, more wire, black tack, helping hand…..and I thought I had everything I needed already, how wrong I was. On the power gauge question, I thought for a moment you were going to unveil a fully working 1.76 scale dynamometer car! Maybe that’s another project you’ve got up your sleeve!

For some time now I have had the inclination to have ago for this on one of my older Locomotives. Moved about 3 months ago, along with my stuff came all of my mom's stuff. Sorting through her boxes, I came upon my HO trainset from the mid 80s, heh she saved it did not know..... Had a ton of copper track, misc other stuff, lots of rolling stock and a Blue Box Athearn loco, Atlas Loco, Bachmann Loco (one with similar pancake motor)... And a tiny Bachmann shunter. All but the shunter I changed over to DCC and all work great 😊 but opening that box of old train stuff opened a can o worms lol Thanks for the video!

A few years ago Graham of Lakeside fame, convered a Hornby Cl. 91 from a 3 pole motor to a five pole motor. He got the replacement motors off e-bay. After the re-fit there was a vast improvement in 91’s the running capabilities. I have enjoyed this video and thank you for sharing. Regards Charlie Tallis

A great film on this continued HST125 Modification Upgrade. So, with a new motor, DCC PCB, two LED lighting boards, some wire, solder, and a decoder. Followed with a little bit of time and patience and one has a refreshed loco for another 40 years, well maybe, LOL. Superbly explained and clearly shown for the viewers on what must be done to get things working on the right track (intended pun). Kudos you Charlie for another master class in (jack of trades) modeling once again.

Nice job! Must be an awesome feeling to see something you fiddle with come to life and working as intended. Btw, a small "hack" I picked on YT about the "helping hand": put a piece of heat-shrink around each jaw of one of the "crocodile clips" to help when gripping sensitive stuff - pcb's, cables, components. It protects them from damage. Cheers! And thank you!

Hi Charlie. RS stands for RadioSpares (Components Ltd). The post-DCC power test was slightly flawed in that the previous tests didn't have to lug the loco body with it too (I don't know how much difference the body would make). Nice new tricks - woof!

Yes I think that experiment was fundamentally flawed Paul. Regards Charlie

Thanks! I will look for those lights. Word of caution based on experience: if doing DCC conversion but keeping the original ring field motor, the rear track pickup and the motor power are connected by a small tab (trace it from the brush spring back to the body and you'll see the connection). If you don't break that connection it will run on DCC, but it's not ideal to have the track pickup and motor power connected. Cheers for the video, Charlie!

You covered just about everything that I am doing with my loco's as just about all my steam loco's are Margate built, pre China, none are DCC ready, using care and 8-pin sockets I am converting most of my stock. As an extra I recently bought from Amazon a small heat gun, an Avec UK Heat Tool, two heat, 150w & 300w, Model HG60D. It has stopped me getting solder onto the sleeving from the iron when I used to do what you were doing, it makes a much nicer job too. A very well thought-out video Charlie, keep up the good work.

11:24 Realizing this is an older video and someone below may have mentioned this; RS stood for "Radio Spares". Lovely job Charlie. I am absolutely sold on this relatively simple conversion for my old 125s 😎 I did a bit of Heath Robinson on them about 15 years ago and managed to get front and rear lights by drilling tiny holes and using grain of wheat bulbs in parallel on the front and in series on the back, which didn’t work too badly on my old DC garden railway! 😀 However, this seems like a major step up from that so it will be on my list of things to do once we are moved 😉 Thanks a for another great video Charlie, all the best mate 🍀🍻👍

I can’t remember where I read it (many years ago) that the DCC motor connections were just a paler version of the track feed wires - ie grey=pale black; orange=pale red. Provided red and black are oriented correctly, you then have the correct direction sorted. I’ve converted a DMU to DCC but it retains the old drivetrain; the motor upgrade seems a very good step. Thanks for the videos.

Well timed, Charlie! I just finished converting an old so-called "DCC-ready" Bachmann GE 44 Tonner to non-sound DCC, including a keep-alive. I did keep the incandescent bulbs as the TCS decoder could handle them, and I only use them dimmed as the loco is used only for shunting on a very small layout. It was well worth the investment, as the decoder's back EMF feedback motor control gives it great slow speed control that is much better than that using DC. You can see a picture of the loco on my Facebook page under my user name shown here, should you be interested. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Nice one Charlie..I just hope all health and safety measures were in place incase the cord broke ......lol . i had the same issue with the wide wheels shorting on points so i removed the wheel sets and careful filed the wheels a bit thinner and that cured the problem ,fiddly work but well worth the effort .. yet again another brilliant show..again another master class from the master ..

An excellent 'how-to' Charlie - thank you, you didn't disappoint! Point to note, though, wiring a double-ended engine like a '47, '50 or '52 can be a bit more complicated to ensure both end red and white lights work correctly relative to the direction of travel from the one decoder. But quite do-able with care. However I'd be very wary about trying to solder more than one wire to a miniature circuitboard tab (especially that 250A rated stuff you were using!!!) so make sure you've got plenty of heat shrink in stock before you start!

I've been out of the DCC conversion game for a few years now although heading back in that direction soon. I had a layout (I'm not going to shamelessly paste links here, anyone who wanted to find it will, I'm sure) with curved inclines and had great success with the old Class 43s. A class 43 train, CD motored power car on each end, in a DCC consist, was one of the most consistent, effortless performers going up and down a curved incline, pulling 7 full size Mk3s or 8 of the diddy little old Hornby ones. The sense of accomplishment, seeing those trains flying around, shouldn't be underestimated either! I ended up with an old blue and grey one, an Exec livery one and a Swallow livery one, probably costing less than one of the modern models. Also, great to see how the modding scene has moved on recently, with those 3D printed harnesses.

Put some heat shrink on each of the fingers of the helping hand that grips things. It will grip things much better whilst do less damage when griping fragile things. I’m sure you also know to regularly clean the iron with a metal mesh. It makes the soldering quality much easier and better when the iron is clean and always use fresh solder. But I’m sure you know 😁 Another great video Charlie. 😁❤️

Uh-oh. Looks like the wiring on that crossing isn't quite right. It should change polarity according to the point direction to avoid shorting. Those older locos with their fat wheels are excellent fault finders! Unfortunately now we know that fault is there it also means there is a very slim chance the same short might happen even with newer stock. Maybe an investigation is in order? Shame about the power loss after the conversion, but the improved slower speeds are definitely a good enough trade off, and if that trailer car were to become a power car it'd effectively double its power. And those new LED lights just look brilliant. Back in the day I put two power bogies in to my 37/47s. They were absolute beasts! Great work, Charlie! Mike.
@ChadwickModelRailway

Great video again. Always respect the time and energy you put into presenting and camera work - thanks. Perhaps you missed a step in the DCC conversion? After fitting the decoder and placing on the track without power I would always check there is no electrical connection between the track and motor with the multimeter ( motor 1&2/orange and grey connections) - to ensure you don’t smoke the decoder!

Very informative & easy video to follow Charlie. Interesting to note the wire stripper in the UK is GBP44.30 from RS-UK. From RS-AU the cost is AUD223.81. Converting GBP44.30 back to Aus at say 0.50 that comes out at roughly AUD85! How come the big difference I wonder!!!
