Loved this one Charlie, really liked the steam sound, the only problem I have with steam sound is the chuff sounds to quick, if that makes sense, is it possible to change this?

@@ChadwickModelRailway I know TRS Trains manage to sync the smoke (Steam) with the chuff, I suspect they use ultrasonics for the smoke, much safer than heat, but they don't say how it's done, protecting there invention I suspect.

Thank you Charlie for a very interesting and informative video. Years ago I built a PCB with components supplied (not sure which company) of an “EXHAUST STEAM SOUND CHUFFER”. This was of course for a regular DC analogue layout and had the loud speaker fitted statically on the layout under the scenery. Years before DCC but gave a realistic sound albeit not upon the loco, but upon the layout itself. The sky is the limit now with DCC, but those of us with analogue, it still adds a touch of realism.

Spent many an hour at Reading General in the late 60's watching Westerns and Warships, and the Warships were always my favourites, probably due to the famous and evocative names they used to carry. The best livery in my humble opinion was green with half yellow fronts, together with red nameplates and 'D' prefix numbers. They really were a magnificent loco, especially when double heading the Cornish Riviera express. Never forget my excitement on the day that D830 Majestic slowly came through the station on the middle line with a down freight, the last Warship that I needed to complete the full set. Cheers Charlie, love the channel.

Charlie I love the way you explain what you are doing. Looking at the tender it appears that it has a removable plastic coal load allowing you to put a real coal load in. Just subscribed. Currently renovating our bungalow while coping with health issues, but (hopefully) in a couple of years will be at the point where I can 'unleash' the N locos I bought a few years ago into the loft and build a layout. Came here for inspiration and found it, as well as a compatible world view. Learning to use Anyrail (having owned it for several years and leaving it dormant) and have spent the last week or so watching the development of your layout and your predilection for going on raiding trips to the kitchen when the 'cats away'. You were lucky with that Hornby GWR. I recently bought a new Hornby Castle, when I took the tender top off, all the internals disintegrated immediately. You do right to add weights to the tender, I always add some car wheel weights to Hornby tenders. Also lining the inside of the tender with bath seal (for sound deadening) improves the sound quality.

Really interesting - and shows how intricate these models are. One observation from the steam loco on the rolling road - it looks as if its got a slight issue with 'wobble'. The cab wobbles but the front end seemed to be going up and down too? I've watched other videos on 'quartering' so I wonder if the quartering on this loco is just slightly out, causing the wobble...or whether it's an axle either bent r not sitting properly? Its one of these things that doesn't show up when running around the layout. Now I can understand why a good few secondhand locos are described as having a 'wobble' ! They must be tested at the shop on a rolling road! Thanks yet again Charlie.

Brand new models steam and diesels (excuse bad spelling it's not a strong point with me) have a certain amount of wobble to them. I assume that this could be due the the axels having round ends, and the wheel sets been a press fit. If the axles had squair ends and the axle holes the same, (like Slaters) then perhaps they would not wobble! Just a thught!

Another very enjoyable video - thanks, Charlie. But I agree with Don Shape - my memory of Kings (and Castles) taking off from High Wycombe on a 'down' train is that they had a much more throaty/bassy sound, especially on those first few 'chuffs' from a standing start. But maybe that was enhanced by echoes from the 'up' line retaining wall! Reproducing a sound like that from a speaker smaller that a matchbox is a big ask. Maybe a tuned resonance tube stashed in the first carriage would come close to doing it justice - well, over to you and your contacts at the manufacturers on that one then, Charlie 🤣

Charlie, sorry this Is the wrong video for this reply. I have starting watching your videos in the background at work and have seen many this week. In a similar video you mentioned using plastic cement to glue on a loco body to the frame as opposed to ACC as it would more easily removed and broken free. I wanted to offer that ACC can be broken free very easily by putting it in the freezer overnight. Of course it works on all of the ACC on a model but if it’s used for only for joining the chassis to the body of loco you are home free. Thanks for your great videos. Cheers from the US.

Nice stream locomotive. I put a cube speaker in my britannia locomotive in the smoke box. I just extended the wire to fix works very well. Even Hornby wanted to know how I did this. My thoughts was when do you get sound from a stream locomotive coming from the tender? In real life you don't. Great video thanks for sharing Charlie 😄👍

It was intriguing to see D842 in blue and without the D prefix, as it was usually seen in the rather nice maroon livery with the D prefix. I had always assumed that the D was only dropped shortly before withdrawal but you may know better, as you often do!

Yes you’re right Hugh. It was dropped once steam had ended removing duplication between steam and diesels.

Hey Charlie, Despite the fact that i am into swiss railways (period 3/4) I really love your show. British model railroading is quite different from continental railroading. Your eye for detailing and landscaping is amazing. Very realistic. What i like about your approach is that you just start and you find out things on the run. To me it seams that british model railroaders have far more quality issues with their rolling stock then continental model railroaders. On the other hand prices of british rolling stock are far more acceptable then continental. May i suggest that you buy two pair of tweezers, one straight, one bent, ik will make your life so much easier handling small wires screws and other parts. Keep up the good works, thank you very much.

To be fair: Back in the day I had a few years on a preserved railway. On a certain day I was approaching the yard with a works train, doing 15-20mph. Unbeknownst to me, there was an unscheduled movement going on in the yard. The yard foreman had, therefore, laid out 3 track detonators at a suitable distance to warn the train as we had no operating signals. Even at 15-20mph the resulting explosions almost rolled into one sound.

Charlie, as a complete novice, I'm finely getting around to laying track. It's really amazing how small the locomotives are , with your camera they look huge . What is the width of the bench that you have laid the track on. The era I'm trying to model is the cross over between steam and the first Diesels introduced into Ireland by CIE. 🇮🇪🇪🇺

Hi Charlie. That Warship does look great. However I do have several sound fitted steam outline models and I never fit speakers in the tender. I never heard a tender chuff! Seriously if you take the bother (and it is in many cases) to fit the speaker(s) up the front in the smokebox you will be amazed at the improvement in what sound you get. One of my Castles would easily outbark (is that a word?) your King which to my ears sounds a bit asthmatic. I believe the problem lies in the internal shape of tenders from which the sound bounces. I frequently fit as large a sugar cube speaker (12mm or 9mm) in the smokebox against the back of the smokebox door facing back into the boiler which I think probably acts as a megaphone. It acts brilliantly. I always fit sound systems from South West Digital whose steam systems are generally better and more appropriate than many others. Hope one day that we may be able to chat face to face. Regards Barry

Re the cables in the "War ship" I would have put a little bit of tape over them, just to help keep them in place in the channels. I have in the past when wanting to fit a decoder to brand new locomotives, that wires have been trapped inside, and almost split in half by the body screws.
