Converting my '06 Range Rover L322 Headlights to "Adaptive Steering" for the '09 Rebuild Project

Can I salvage enough unbroken parts from the wrecked 2006 Range Rover L322 to convert my 2006 non-AFS headlight into one that will work for the 2009?
More importantly....how TF am I going to remember where all these tiny little parts go?!
My 2006 Range Rover was totaled so I decided to "upgrade" by buying a crashed 2009 Range Rover from IAAI.com and using the parts from my '06 for the rebuild project.
Unfortunately, I found out that the headlights from my wrecked 2006 Range Rover do not turn off the warning lights on the dash of the new one because the '09 has the adaptive headlights, or what Land Rover calls AFS.
The AFS headlight from the '09 was smashed the pieces so I salvage what I can and use the parts to retrofit my non-AFS headlight to make it work in the rebuild project.

Very impressive. I'll be re-watching this a few times for when I decide to fix mine.

Patrick G'ski Thanks! Maybe next project I’ll do more of a DIY walkthrough that will be easier to follow. I really couldn’t picture how to film this at the time but now I think I could have a different camera on a tripod and get it much clearer for anyone wanting to disassemble their lights.

Rob! Please help. I drive an 06 sport and I need better headlights. It has the afs feature. Do you know if I can still put aftermarket headlights that don’t have afs?
@RobTheCarGuy

You can but you will get a warning light on the dash if the afs module isn't plugged in. I'd highly discourage replacing the headlight assemblies however. If you have light problems I'd replace the HID bulbs and clean the projector lense before doing anything else! HID bulbs will loose intensity over time and every headlight assembly I've seen has very cloudy projectors that reduce light output. Also make sure the outer lenses are not foggy/milky. I have zero problems with light output on mine and my eyes suck. If you still need more light after cleaning the outer lens, inner lens and new bulbs, I'd add some aftermarket fog/driving lights to supliment the factory beams before aftermarket housings. I've NEVER seen aftermarket headlight assemblies that are half as good as factory housings. OEM housings are the product of literally tens of millions of dollars of R&D and are purchased from companies that only make OEM assemblies for high end brands. Good luck!

Hi.. How can can I get more detail about the adaptive headlight convert.. I have L322. Need your advise..
@RobTheCarGuy

What are you "converting"? In my case I had a 2009 that came with adaptive lights and I had to salvage the mechanism out of the smashed 2009 housing and retrofit the 2006 headlight assembly that originally did not have the adaptive lights. If you are trying to add adaptive lights to an L322 that did not originally come with it, that would be much more difficult. Off the top of my head you would need headlight assemblies with adaptive lights (very expensive which is why I salvaged mine and did the conversion), and from what I remember the chassis harness is different and you'd need a control module as well. Anything is possible but I'd bet it would be much cheaper to just buy an L322 that came with adaptive lighting from the factory. Now, if I misunderstood what you were asking let me know and I'll give you a better answer.

@@RobTheCarGuy Hello, I understand very well what you mean, adapting a non-adaptive headlight will be a very expensive and long process. I believe it. That's why it's unnecessary. but while I'm talking to you, I would like to consult you something. Since the headlights of my 2008 model 3.6 TDV8 L322 were not good enough, they changed the lenses.. However, the low beam headlights are still not good. I know xenon bulbs are important, but the lenses are even more important. And I'm looking for the right lenses for this vehicle. I will be glad if you give information about this..

06range sport is l320 isnt it?? As I have 1

Yup. The Sport is the L320. Did I call it an L322 in the video? If so, my bad. I do that all the time with the Mercedes. We had a 2005 E500 Wagon and I always talk about the "W211 E55 AMG Wagons". Technically the W211 is the sedan. Mercedes idents the wagons as the S211 so an E55 Wagon would be an S211 E55.

Thanks for the comment! I actually have it nearly finished now and filmed most of it but I haven't had time to edit it yet. Our daughter was born 10 weeks early and then I purchased a second business out of town so I haven't been able to justify putting time into the videos recently, but you will get to see it all come together for sure! I guess the best thing would be to make sure you have notifications turned on when I upload again. I also have another L322 on deck, followed by absolute craziness with the Jaguar that will make the Rover look like a warm up.

Hey Rob, great videos so far on the Range Rover! I've been looking at the '09s ... had an off topic question. Do you know if the width of the tailgate is >= 48''? I was wondering if it would be able to haul 4x8 sheet goods on occasion? Maybe propped up above the wheel arches.
@RobTheCarGuy
@RobTheCarGuy 4 года назад
My gut tells me it isn't wide enough but I'm not 100%. I can almost promise you that it isn't long enough though. With all the seats folded I am very surprised how often I have to use the armrest and front passenger seat area. The 2nd row seat bottoms fold up and take up 4-5" also. MAYBE if you unbolted all the seats and interior panels you could come up with something but I'd just say get a roof rack and save yourself all the trouble.

Actually a thought just came to me. I ordered fabric for the headliner and it was just over 8 feet long. So yeah, the whole headliner is slightly longer than 8', no way it would fit inside.

Cool, thanks for the info. Mainly I was wondering about the width. Right now in a Grand Cherokee I have to tilt plywood in, not ideal but it fits! And I just tie down the lift gate. it would be nice to slide it in level ...have seen it done in some older Land Cruisers.

Cory J it just so happens that I was in the workshop today so I grabbed a measure. The hatch is 48” but the wheel wells are basically 40” wide. They don’t have enough width until about 12” up so you’d have to either make a 12” riser in the back to clear or tilt the plywood just like the Jeep. Also with the tailgate down you have about 7’ to the front seats so you’d have plywood hanging about a foot off the open tailgate.
