I tried your method and it worked well for me. With this conversion method, I can now smoke pipes that have been stored for years. Thank you for sharing.
@@The_Southland_Piper is it really a massive difference between 6mm and 9mm? I may modify an old Savinelli i have for 6mm but if i cant go to 9mm is it worth selling the pipe to get a 9mm?
Thank You. I enjoy the challenge of converting pipe. I’ve done about 40 but on a couple of occasions it didn’t go as planned. Thank You for watching and the comment.
There is a way to filter any pipe without modifications. Simply put a layer of keystones at the bottom till it covers the draft hole, and a layer of activated charcoal on top to cover the keystones. Its not much, barely covers the bottom and creates a tiny air pocket instead of dottle. Try it. You can use the tin of the keystones for activated charcoal if you have a surplus of one. Also, those keystones could be used multiple times if you pick them up. I use Savinelli’s 9mm filters and dump them into my tin of keystones, and use it throughout the weeks depending on your usage. you can find more creative ways to use this system daily without much hassle. One thing is, if you want to pick up the keystones for reuse, have a eyebrow plucker and widen the end a bit, and pick the keystones from the ashtray and a extra tin on the side to lay them out and dry them. With this system, you could use any pipe you wish to use!
Man, I have passed up so many pipes because I use a filter, I have tried and tried without it, and it's just not enjoyable for me, and that's what this is all about. I've tried a few rushed conversions on a basket twice and failed. Mainly because I rushed it. I see patience is the key. Thank you for your time and posting this video basket #3 here goes 🫰
I’m glad you have enjoyed my videos. I have done about 40 conversions and have had three failures. My biggest failure was my Castello. All three pipes that failed to convert were able to be repaired. Yes, 💯 it is about patience. Just make sure the tenon is big enough. On my conversions that are real close to being too small I have started warming the tenon to make them a little more forgiving. I’ll reheat as I go. I think it helps. I hate the sound of a tenon breaking. Good luck and Thank you for watching.
I've done this to 2 of my cobs so far. Turned out great. I buy all 9mm briars so I don't have to change those. This was great to watch. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank You. I enjoy converting pipes. Although it doesn’t always go as planned. See my video “I Broke my Castello”. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Really well done video. Thanks for sharing what you have done. Some good techniques for me to consider if I have to do it. Only gone to 9mm. Happy smokes
Thank You, I’m going to try to convert some to 9mm. I would convert everything to 9mm but the tenon has to be big enough first. I did 6mm so I didn’t have to get rid of some of my pipes.
Thanks for a great video. People dog on filters but I am a huge fan of 6mm and, esp, 9mm filters. I have several Peterson System pipes, all with the standard army mount. For comparison, I can change between an unfiltered stem and a 9mm stem mid-bowl, and a good filter doesn't harm the flavor at all, it simply takes away the sharp edges of any blend. It might only be a 10-20% improvement but it's worth it IMHO. I get 3-4x uses out of each filter by letting let them dry between smokes. Cost is negligible.
Nice video! On the brass dot . I have a grabow that I want to restore that's missing the spade . Have you encountered something like this? What was your solution? Thanks for the video man!
I haven’t done it myself but I did talk to someone that used a Dremel to replace the logo. They cut around the logo on a spare stem then made the same cut on the stem that needed repair. Filled any gaps with black super glue. Also you could buy some Grabow stems off eBay and try to find a replacement stem. I do know that some pipe repair shops can reproduce certain pipe logos. But a Grabow wouldn’t be worth the expense unless it had sentimental value. Good luck.
I've turned into my grandad, I'm sitting here yelling, just switch to balsa wood filters and cut them shorter to fit without removing from the stummel. Enjoyed the video though. I dont use filters but prefer filter pipes for the better draw, so now I'm going to run through my non filter pipes and do this.
@@The_Southland_Piper I'm really enjoying your videos sir, hoping that ai don't ruin a good stem. I have a pipe that I need to have a stem made for, the pipe itself is in decent condition, but the stem looked like a dog used it as a chew toy. I'm using an mm cob stem in it for now, the tenon fits but the stem is a smaller diameter to the stummel.
I was thinking that when the tolerances get real close to either breaking through the stummel or stem, why not just trim an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch off the length of the filter itself with a razor knife? Easy enough to keep a small box of trimmed filters around. How often do you replace a filter as a rule? Have watched 4 or 5 of your videos so far. I like that you work like a surgeon.
Thank you for watching. If I used balsa filters your suggestion would be great. However, I use charcoal filters and they can’t be trimmed. I replace my filter after every smoke.
Hello my friend, how are you? I really enjoyed the video, and I'm asking for your advice, I have an opening for a 9 mm filter that is too big and I need to fill the gap that remains with some material so that the suction is tight. What do you suggest me considering the fact that I can't do any sophisticated operation because I'm really not a technical person. Thank you my friend and all the best
@@The_Southland_Piper No, my friend, they are not small, they are normal, from "vauen", the problem is that the opening of the stem is larger than something like 10 mm
@@peacepiper1988 The Vauen filters are smaller than other filters. They will say Dr Perl junior on them. The Vauen filters measure 7.88mm. Get some Savinelli filters. They measure 8.26mm. Changing to the larger filters may solve your issue.
I could use one the diameter of the filter. That would create a step in the mortise. Using a drill bit the same diameter as the mortise leaves a nice smooth surface and that is easier to keep clean.
