Conway Twitty "It's Only Make Believe"

Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. January 17, 1959. This is some of my favorite footage. We get a rare glimpse of the view from outside the Little Theater. Then as Conway Twitty begins his song, you can see the entry way from the inside of the doors. Then we follow as he walks into the main studio theater. It's like getting a rare vintage tour of a place I'd love to go and visit.

I'm 62 this year and I have watched Conway Twitty go from black and white screen to living color. Oh how this man could move me! I love all the performers of this era. They made sense. The lyrics meant something special and there was a great story in every song. May they all rest in peace.

@@shugharris4050 I’m only 45 but my folks are about 80…they laid the foundation of my life with golden oldies playing in the background…this still touches my soul in a way nothing else can, I miss all the greats SO MUCH, something is definitely missing today. I can still see my parents doing the jitter bug like a couple super heroes, man were they great too! I’m really going to miss this generation, they were like nothing else, irreplaceable.😢❤ Much love to ya Shug! P.S. If we could make them all twenty again, they would put a woopin’ on all the nonsense and problems happening today…they just wouldn’t be having it, we would unite and kick it’s ass, no problem…let’s hope we can muster up their old school mojo and save the planet.

I sincerely believe that this is arguably the best classic rock-and-roll song, but this video is all you need for the stark difference between sounding like the King vs. being the King. Twitty has the voice, but not even a fraction of Elvis' stage presence/charisma.

As a child I watched the Dick Clark shows on a black and white screen. It took me YEARS to learn he was lip-syncing the whole time! But wow oh wow...he sure did a heck of a job doing it! I love Conway Twitty. Always have and always will. It also didn't take me long to notice the similarities in his moves and Elvis Presley's moves. Just look at the clip near the end after he's up on stage. There!.....there is Conway's moves which came BEFORE Elvis! There you have it! But Elvis took it to another level, didn't he? And man oh man DID he! Great performers gone to rest. I love you guys!

Brings tears to my eyes! I was a 9th grader when Conway came along with ONLY MAKE BELIEVE & my favorite song. But he came along the same time Elvis did and the media & public wasn't very nice to him. They said he tried to sound like and be like Elvis on the rock & roll side. He did appear on Dick Clark's American Bandstand but shortly after the Country music side picked him up & the rest is history. Along time ago.At 74 I hope to hear Hello Darling when I get to the gates! I'd love to see Michael & Tre-God Bless You both for carrying on his music. I don't travel much would love to see you before I die. Love from WY

This icon will. Be today tomorow and forever a icon,, his songs were always heart felt,, everytime he sang he put it right to the edge and sang his heart out, l Remeber when he sang,, that he once said l sang this song,, be cause l was deep. In love with another guys wife,, and l use to love the growl in his voice that he sang from the heart,, he seemed like he was crying in his voice, all his records were hits at my partys nothing like his songs they made u cry, made u sigh,,. Made u feel emotional, all my friends would cry with the songs of his,, every song was a story of life a man and a woman so deep in love with another, and. He brought those songs into pure solid gold,, every song he will always always be remembered as pure gold,,,

There was just as much hate, you just didn't see it broadcasted every day 24/7. It has become mechanized warfare against us to make us think times are sooooo much worse. The numbers say that just isn't so, however, that doesn't help when it comes to making you give up freedoms.

Sure seems that way, however I promise you that according to history the 50's still had it's fair share of bigotry, maliciousness, and violence. But it also had its positively wonderful and extraordinarily amazing elements as well. I honestly feel that regardless of era, all the negative events that takes place makes all our positive experiences even that much more exquisite, because without them we just would not appreciate the finer points that life has to offer.

This was Conway’s memorable first major hit that reached #1, sold a million records, and spent five months on Billboard’s Hot 100. It was the hot song of summer and fall of '58. I believe it. I absolutely love this song and this single record version in particular. This Beech-nut show appearance of Conway was of him lip syncing to his hit record. These and other performances were the MTV videos of their day. The artists that appeared on Beech-nut usually lip synced to their records. Very few actually performed live. Regardless, this music video strikes a chord with so many, including me. It was a 2 minute power ballad of the time. This is my favorite Conway song with "Hello Darlin" as a close second.

The travelogue in Dick Clark's intro to this is a masterpiece in and of itself. Setting the tone for what would prove to be legendary music with mention of classics by Meredith Willson and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Amazing! What the heck ever became of "Whoop Up" though?B.W.

People forget Conway was promoted early on as rock singer. I remember when this first aired. My 14 year old sister had a melt down. Forget Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty was her new love.
