Conyers BioLab Fire: GEMA issues shelter in place for 83K residents | FOX 5 News

Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security (GEMA) issued a shelter in place order for all of 93,000 residents of Rockdale County Sunday evening while the smoke from a chemical fire at the Conyers BioLab blows over.

No, "BioLab" is the name of the company. They make pool and spa chemicals, like pH balancers and chlorine solutions.

OMG I was just thinking the same thing. This same lab had 2 previous fires, one in 2004 and one in 2020. Now there's this one in 2024? This seems really suspicious ladies and gentlemen.

@@jaybrickman1094 this literally happened years ago. The law firm I worked for was settling those claims when I first started. All those people around there will be sick. This already happened once before.

It looks similar to one of my masks for work - if so, then it contains multiple layers and a replaceable filter, and will prevent particulate pass through. It's great for someone coughing spittle in one's face, or if there is dust. It will do nothing to stop the gasses in the air from that horrendous fire, however.

In their case they make biocides for pool and water treatment. The yellowish smoke was lots of chlorine gas. 😮

Why do they tell people to turn off air conditioners when they only recirculate air inside the house. Window units are different. But central air would also put positive pressure inside and potentially help keep outside contaminants out. Why is it that the advice relayed to us on the news from our state officials and experts is always completely flawed half the time.

What sort of pool and spa stuff produces that much Yellow Orange Smoke? That's something nasty with Nitrates. I'm not wanting to be hyperbolic. But I am or was Hazmat 3 certified back in my Fire Service days. The only times I can think of seeing that much smoke of that color is footage of the PEPCON plant outside of Vegas, which made Solid Rocket fuel for the Space Shuttles, or some of the nastier Fertilizer plant fires. Would a pool chemical company be using a huge quantity of Nitric Acid? Or worse Amonium Nitrate?
