This episode we wake up to a stunning sunset at the very centre of Australia, then bash our way back through the bush track to the Finke Road and head to Coober Pedy. We don't really know how best to sum up the underground town and opal capital of the world. It's pretty interesting, it's got pretty gems, but it's pretty dusty and pretty ugly.
But you have to stop through and check it out for yourself.
On our way we free camp and wake up to magic bird sounds and nesting budgerigars.
At Coober Pedy we camp at a hill top van park with views to the stunning Breakaways, we check out a working opal mine, visit the underground Serbian Orthodox Church and visit Fays underground home and mine to see how people lived during Coober Pedy's heady early days and opal mine boom.
But this is also a time to reflect on our next steps. After 4 months of arid, dry, corrugated and savannah country - as stunning and fun as it's been - we have to mull where the final legs of our lap are going to take us.
And we decided to head south toward the coast. But we've got a surprise in store.
Welcome to Episode 46 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula @nextleveloz. Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.
This channel is for fun and to share our trip of a lifetime and 100% of any ad revenue earned goes to charity.

Thanks again. It was a lovely morning and it so hard to show how it feels. I was worried this sequence was a bit long in this case, but I really like that piece of music as well. It seems to match scenes that feel a little bit epic. Glad you enjoyed it - we did also. cheers

Interesting. Coober pedy is interesting, but not a place I’m anxious to re visit. You got as much as possible out of your visit.

Hi thanks for watching and the comment. Yes, that sums up our thought as well. So many stunning and wondrous places to see in Australia and elsewhere. It was a pretty wild place and it’s curious in its own way, but that’s it for Coober Pedy for us we think.

Anotjer good episode guys. Your drone work at the start was excellent, and the music was a great match. Do you mind if I ask where you get your music from?

Hi thanks guys. We really appreciate the feedback and the fact you take the time to watch. We watch you guys and several others and it’s great seeing all the different places they get to. We subscribe to Epidemic Sound. TBH I’m not sure it’s value for money if you aren’t trying to commercialize the channel - we arent. But we love incurred that cost for our own enjoyment and given we hope to get some money to charity, that it helps keep our small but growing band of subscribers tolerate our amateur efforts and put up with the ads etc so we can send some ad revenue off. But in any case, Epidemic Sound. Stay safe and we follow your next adventures with interest.

I agree that Lamberts Centre is the important one. BTW I know the Defender like the Disco 4 and 5 has a very long service interval (I think 32,000km for the new Defender) but if you intend to keep the vehicle long term (especially since you are towing) get an oil change every 10,000km or maybe stretch it to 15,000km but don't rely on the JLR recommendation. I own a Disco 4 with a 23,000km recommended service interval but have never gone more than 10,000km without an oil change and always use the JLR recommended oil.

Hi - thanks for watching again and taking the time to comment. Yes we agree on the service interval. We have reduced the service interval to 15,000km. I seriously can’t see how the specified interval is appropriate even with modern synthetic oils. Most modern cars now have conditions based servicing, but again as a matter of prudence we felt it was better to reduce the service interval. It doesn’t help that the prices for a straightforward oil and filter change by the dealers are very expensive. We’ve also changed thea or filter twice during the lap as well. We also carry a litre of the JLR spec oil to top up the small amount that l gets burned along the way.

@@nextleveloz I change the filter with every oil change. I have also found that non dealer specialists that use the right spec oil are about half the dealer price for a simple interim oil change. Not sure how many km you have done in the Defender but if it is a diesel it should use less oil as it gets older but normally within the first 10,000km or so. Maybe the towing makes a difference, not sure what that does to oil consumption. I carry 5 litres of oil but only needed about 200ml when the car was new.

Hi David & Paula, How are you going with the bed bolster? Do you fold it up everyday or just leave it in position and work around it? What was your weight when it rolled of the production line? The zone is in our top 3 to purchase and just looking for info. Cheers AA

Hi. We don’t mind the bolster and it’s a good compromise to have a slightly smaller van. We do fold it up every day - we know some people don’t - which does give a bit more space to move around, but if we aren’t outside or say I’m at the table working / editing Paula prefers the bolster as a bit of a “day bed” backing so she can sit up. So while we know this is one of those tribal things that people have views on, personally we’ve had no issue with the bolster at all. It’s worth mentioning Paula cut down one of those zip up completely encapsulated mattress protectors and restitched it to bolster size. So the main mattress and the booster have their own separate mattress covers. We don’t even worry about a sheet over the bolster section. So while the mattress cover can get a bit dusty/ marked overall it means making the bed is easier. The bolster just pops on and out . cheers

Hi David, Just wondering how you have attached your mirrors as we have a defender also.

Hi. Thanks for watching, much appreciated. We use 3D printed brackets from Defender3D in the UK. The link is here. defender3d.co.uk/products/ols/products/tow-mirror-mounting-solution They are clamped on to Defender’s side mirror arms and you can then use something like Milenco mirrors and arms without the Milenco clamps that slip off ghe mirrors. They have been terrific. They have a coupon discount on at the moment. We have no affiliation but were probably one of the earlier purchasers and they been right around the country. Check it out. All the best.

Thanks for watching. Might be / might not be 😂😉. We aren’t good at the whole influencer holding people in suspense but hopefully by the end of the next episode it’s clear. Thanks again though- we appreciate the comments and interaction.
