Hi Jess, thank you for your lovely Videos. As a German I have to add Dutch babies also have nothing to do with German cooking. The closed thing we have to Dutch babies is Quiche. Real German pancakes are more like French Crêpes. Germans normally eat a lot of bread or cereal for breakfast. It is very uncommon to have a cooked breakfast. Germans mostly have pancakes as a sweet lunch or savory like an omlette. ☺️ Merry Christmas from Berlin to you all ❤🎄
I think it may be a German American dish . As a German I've seen many people calling these German pancakes and I thought maybe it a regional dish? My family is from the franken Bayern area. And our pancakes are like you said french crepes
Did you ever hear it called fankurshin? That’s a phonetic spelling. Gramma didn’t write it down, I copied her recipe as she made it. We ate it more like a dessert or treat.
@@marigoldmeadowsfarm7495 This sounds like the German word Pfannkuchen which is in English pancakes. So I guess it is the same. You can eat it as desert, but it is very filling 😊
I'm from Germany and watch lots of english speaking RU-vid videos. I never heard of dutch baby pancakes here, but now I make them often and serve them to my friends - nobody's ever heard of them. I just call this dish oven pancakes now.
My "egg pies" are never the same because I open my frig up and say what do I have in here or in the garden that I can add. 😊 sometimes I have a crust, sometimes not or if I have left over potatoes I'll shred them and line my pie pan with basically hash browns. Great easy laid back breakfast/brunch or supper. Love breakfast for supper ❤ ~ Rhonda
Words can’t express how much I’m loving this channel!! ❤ Why: I love that you’re show us how simple it is to cook every day items,as well as how we can tweak to what we like and/or have. 👍🏻 I love caramelized onions, but never realized how simple they were to make. I also never thought about making a large batch, and freezing them in smaller batches. 🤦🏼♀️ Also, appreciate you showing how to make a simple syrup, and void the store-bought junk. 🤩 Thanks Jess!!
Lovely! I said it on another post, but I'll say it again, I love this channel. I really feel like I'm a friend sitting in your kitchen, chatting and watching you cook. ❤
I finely chop left over potatoes (fries, tots, home fries) or if I have whole potatoes I will grate them. Add salt, pepper and anything other seasoning you want. Melt some butter and drizzle in your potatoes. Stir well. Mixture should be a little pasty-like and hold together when squeezed. (You can chop/mix this in a food processor if you have one). Place potato mixture into a greased pie pan. Press the mixture in the bottom and sides of a pie pan. Par bake your "crust" for about 15 minutes (while you're putting together your egg custard). Remove crust from the oven. Add egg custard and return to the oven. Bake until egg custard is set. Play with it. Make it your own. Enjoy!
one of our favorite quiche/frittata ( with or without the crust) is roasted peppers - either from scratch or from a can and cheese. It tastes like a chile rellano. I also do huge batches of caramelized onions in my crockpot…put them on early in the morning and let them go for hours. They smell so good and freeze beautifully.
Best quiche ever is the Heirloom Tomato Tart. A layer of pesto kicks it up, and any white melty cheese (though my favorite is Gruyere), fresh basil and oregano, and a top layer of lovely summer tomatoes sliced thin. I dream about this one in the winter...
We made your gluten free Dutch baby recipe for my family, my parents and my brother Christmas morning. They were a big hit. Our favorite was the savory one where we out Beaux Monde seasoning (my husband's aunt gifts him a jar every year) into the batter. It was such a hit, especially with a little goat cheese and green onion on top
I make a brown sugar butter syrup and it’s so good! And just a tiny drizzle goes a long way. 1 cup water 2 cups brown sugar Boil for 4 minutes and then whisk in a stick of salted butter. You can also add a splash of vanilla or bourbon for an extra punch!
New subscriber. I really enjoyed how you just sat and talked to us about the quiche recipes. It was very relaxing and informative. Also, we literally just bought maple syrup at the store and now I feel bad! 🤪 Even I can make the blueberry syrup going forward. Great video!
So crazy funny as I decided to make quiche for tomorrow with company staying over at the farm and wanted something besides hash browns and eggs. started my search for ideas and up pops my favorite cook doing the same! Thank you Jess
Happy birthday Miah!!! My favorite quiche recipe is broccoli, shredded Swiss cheese & mushrooms. But if there are eggs & cheese…it’s always a favorite. My grandma was a Black Sea German, raised in North Dakota. She made a dish we called fankushin. I was raised in California & don’t speak German so I know it’s misspelled. It was like your recipe but she baked it in a cake pan & we ate it like a dessert with pie filling or berry syrup…she made wonderful creamed cheese fillings for it also. My favorite foods she made were her stuffed cabbage rolls & a wonderful treat knipfla. It was a noodle boiled with potatoes & then fried to a yummy golden brown crunchy goodness. I guess it’s a knipfla kind of night on the farm tonight!!! Blessings, debby
Happy Birthday Jeremiah!! Jessica I love your new channel, love the cooking, and all the new recipes you are sharing with us. I love any casserole you could show us. They are easy, and for me and my parents it is something we can eat on for a couple days.
I caramelize onions in the slow cooker. Fill to the brim with the onions and a little fat. Low and slow with occasional stirring. Takes longer but less watching needed. I keep both caramelized and raw diced onions in the freezer. Such a time saver on the days I’m busy.
I just tried carmalizing onions in my slow cooker for the first time at Christmas to make Carmalized Onion Dip. They turned out great and I have enough to freeze some also. The dip was amazing and a huge hit at our families Christmas Eve get together.
I am LOVING these kitchen videos. I made your biscuits on Christmas Day to go with ham and beans and my sweet husband said "I didn't know you could make * real * biscuits!" 😂😂 I didn't either, but my friend Jess has got me on that one 😉
I love your simplicity and playful approach to cooking! This is just what i needed after loosing my cooking confidence when all our kids moved out! Thank you ❤!
I used the think it was amazing getting gifted a quiche from my cousin, but now I have so many eggs from my chickens that I need to make 2-4 quiche at a time - freeze for use/gifting later. My family is divided between cheese and bacon quiche or veggies in quiche, but it never goes to waste. I cut up when cooled, leave in containers in the refrigerator and it’s a delicious grab & go breakfast for the morning rush. 😊
This little recipe looks great! Mushrooms are my go-to ingredient that I think would elevate any quiche! Rehydrate dried mushrooms in your milk or cream for extraordinary flavor.
I love quiche and I make it several times a year. In my family, I’m the only one who eats quiche. We are having our family Christmas get together on New Year’s Day, so this will be great for that. And I have all the ingredients. I usually use ham, spinach and Swiss Cheese. I don’t usually use cheddar because it makes it too greasy for my taste. Thanks for reminding me I need to make one!😊
I caramelised onions recently and let them cook low for about 3 hours and they were so sweet! I added the onions to my potato bake for a christmas lunch and it was delish! As a veggo my go to quiche ingredients are sautéed onion and spinach, sundried tomatoes, fetta, parsley, and a mixed cheese. I always use cream with my eggs. Adding roasted sweet potato or brown mushrooms is also delicious. Quiche is a great diverse recipe for people to learn. Thanks Jess 💗
I love German pancakes and the quiche looks lovely! I live in NH and have a maple sugar house right down the street. I can’t imagine not having pure maple syrup. Homemade Fruit syrups are such a great alternative. I love fresh blueberry syrup. ❤
Hi Jess, Thank you so much for these great videos! Just an FYI that the pancake syrup link goes to the berry syrup. I'd love to get your pancake syrup recipe! Happy birthday to your hubby!😉
I made my son a sausage, caramelized onions, portabella mushrooms, and havarti cheese. It was great. Love your cooking videos as much as I do your gardening videos. ❤
You are so encouraging for us folks to cook from scratch for cost savings and simpler, more nutritious ingredients! Thanks! I am so blessed to have our own blueberries and our own maple syrup. Why oh why don't I make these yummy breakfasts/brunches every week?? Blessings, Marie
Glad that you showed the texture of the Dutch baby pancake. I like to braise my stewing meat on caramelized onions with just garlic and black pepper before adding potatoes and veggies.
Cracking up because I made Dutch babies last week after watching your video and told my kids it was "pancake pie".... so you calling it "egg pie" totally makes sense to me! 😂❤
Love how you cook. Love your way of how you share your way of cooking. I know I'm one of many...I'm of no consequence...but if you read this..know I appreciate you.
I do quiche Loraine brunch, a family tradition Christmas morning. It’s so easy, forgiving and amazing! I add ground pork and sour cream etc. then but rest of the year, it’s whatever we have. Thanks for the video! ✌🏻🙏🏼❤️
Hi Jess and Happy Birthday Jeremiah! This took me back to Saturday morning breakfasts with my Dad and his sisters. My Aunt always made Dutch Babies and we are of German descent.
Happy Birthday, Miah! And Deutch Baby sounds a little like a U2 album title... 🤣 My Mom used to make frittata/quiche and call it "Egg Casserole" if it didn't have a crust and "Breakfast Pot Pie" if it had a crust. Love the fruit syrup sauces! Thanks for sharing, Jess!
I’m new to your channel. I love how you make it feel that I’m in your kitchen and you’re just chatting and showing me how to cook. Although I know how to cook, and well, but it’s fun to see how other people do things.
I bake my thinly sliced onions on a cookie sheet with butter and oil until they get nice and caramelized. It’s easier than standing over the pot/fry pan for 45 minutes. I also wanted to comment on using sour milk products in your food. I think it is much better for you. The enzymes and good bacteria in the “fresh” sour milk are things our body needs to help our digestion. So if you have cows, you’re lucky! go for it! Unfortunately I don’t have a source. But if my store bought milk products sour, I still use them. As you said not for coffee lol. I make Dutch Babies as well. I add fruit in the bottom of the pan with butter such as apples or pears. I call them apple puff pancake then. Plain are still called Dutch babies. Thanks for another great video!
Friday morning here in Oz just having my two Weetbix with milk for breakfast watch you Jess and I am wishing rather eating your brunch than my breakfast. 😊 Happy Birthday Jeremiah🍾🥂🦘🐨
Hi Jess - I had to cut out any excess sugar and discovered, to my delight, that just cooking down blueberries in a little water makes a wonderful topping for meats and pancakes or a mix-in for yogurt. We call it "burst" berries and it works with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries - pretty much any berry-type fruit. The fruit's natural sweetness comes through, while maintaining all the fiber and without spiking blood sugar.
Hey Jess thanks for sharing your farmhouse quiche recipe. I made it for dinner tonight and it was wonderful. My mix in's were caramelized onion, spinach and bacon . This basic recipe will be used often .
Happy Birthday wishes. 🎉I made those Dutch baby pancakes just the way you did in the video for my son and his wife. It was delicious and very filling. Thankyou for the recipe. Happy New Year with all Gods greatest glory and be blessed healthy joyful and safe always ! From Virginia Beach to SC sending hugs and smiles
Thank you Jess for speaking out about the "pancake syrup" I have a hard time explaining to my friends and family why I don't buy certain things. This helps. ❤ Happy Birthday to your sweet hubby🎉 Have a wonderful day together ❤️
Happy birthday Miah! I tend to do frittata as I am not a fan of pie crust and I am usually doing a fridge clean out and need to fry things up first. May have to try the shredded potato version someone else mentioned. I am Canadian so I will agree maple syrup is the best. If I don't have any on hand I will boil berries on low with just 1/4 cup of water and a splash of lemon juice. Makes a beautiful thick sticky sauce with no need to add sugar!
My best quiche is a roasted red pepper, spinach and feta with either pan fried cubed ham or prosciutto. Never tried a dutch baby/German pancake, but it looks like something I could make with the over-abundance of quail eggs we end up with at the end of the summer haha
My quiche ratios are 3-4 eggs, 3T flour, 1-1 1/2C liquid, 1-2C veg and meat, 1 1/2C cheese. Favorite combo for custard is milk, half and half and buttermilk. For cheese it's mozarella, provolone and jack. Topped with parmesan. You can't go wrong with a great quiche! When I had a Cafe/Catering business, we made some form of quiche every week!! Thanks for sharing your expertise and removing some of the fear factor of feeding people well!
I worked in a deli/bakery and made quiche to sell and one I made was a veggie quiche with roasted veggies. Cherry tomatoes, jarred banana peppers (we used them as toppings for the sandwiches we offered), marinated artichoke hearts, carrots sliced very thin, and onions. Once roasted for 30ish minutes feta cheese and topped with egg cream (equal parts egg and cream) mixture. I filled the pan to the top of the crust with the veggies, added the mixture of egg/cream, and baked for 35-45 minutes. The veggies settle down in the crust and the eggs puff up for a beautiful pie. It was one of the best sellers second to ham and spinach.
I’m hungry for a quiche now😋. I’m not a meat eater but I like to sub out Impossible ground “sausage” for the meat and add all kinds of garden veggies. But my absolute fav is caramelized leeks, halved cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and rosemary. Soooo yummy!
Happy Birthday Miah! Great idea about the caramelized onions such a yummy flavor! I enjoy a quiche with spinach bacon and Swiss cheese and a bit of feta! Ham, cheddar and broccoli is a hit in my house!
Happy birthday Miah!🎉🎉 We love quiche. Ours is always different depending on what we have in the fridge. Sounds good and makes me want to bake one for breakfast tomorrow. I wonder if I can keep my husband and kids out of it until breakfast. 😂
Jess, this looks amazing. I can smell-o-vision it from here 🤤Question: I have very similar dietary restrictions to you. I would love it if you might share more meals you cook from scratch that we can eat! I’ve been eating a lot of meat, boiled eggs, and raw vegetables and it’s getting so old but I don’t know what else to make :( thank you!!
I can’t wait to try the quiche! Every recipe I’ve found says to cook the pie crust first and let it cool…so no spontaneous quiche 🤦♀️. This will be a game changer. Thanks Jesse 🤍
My 6 year old watched this video with me and we are making Dutch baby Pancakes and blueberry syrup tomorrow for breakfast! Thank you so much! Your Quiche looks amazing... I like the crust like that! 🙂
I’ll let you in on my grandma’s secret when making egg dishes. She always added a squirt of yellow mustard to them and mixed them up. Adds a delicious flavor to the eggs😉
My favourite quiche is caramelised red onions with balsamic vinegar and goats cheese. It's so so good. Infact, it's what I made when I tried out for Series 2 of the Great British Bake Off and one of the proudest moments of my life was Mary Berry telling me that it was good and there was no soggy bottoms! I didn't get through but it didn't matter, Mary Berry liked my mini-quiches
