Cooking on a Himalayan Salt Block!! Culinary Gimmicks put to the test!
Join me as I endure another "salty" episode of putting gimmicks that annoy me to the test! Will I be right and obnoxiously smug? Or will I be pleasantly surprised by the results!!! have a watch to the end as I prepare 2 pieces of chicken in my Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome. One cooked on the Himalayan Salt Block and one classically done in a cast iron pan!
This is my second episode on Authenticity, following on from my burger experiments!
I do all the cooking while I travel around in my RV. RV cooking at it's best! Please read my blogs on authenticity on my web site.

Nice video. I think to be fair, the breast on the salt block should have been cooked with the same spices and butter. To have garlic, basil, and butter on one and not the other makes the two completely different recipes. I'm sure the clean-up would be much easier with the skillet, and I doubt if the taste would be much different between the two in that case. I have a Himalayan salt block, but to be honest, it just sits on the shelf for show.

That’s part of my point. You would start a kitchen fire if you tried to put butter on the salt block, and it would probably be inedible salty if you tried. There is no way you could infuse those flavors on the salt block. That’s part of the point.

I just received a salt block as a Christmas gift. It took 45 minutes to heat it up on the stove top then it took over 35 minutes for 2 chicken thighs to cook. I think I'm going to starve to death before dinner is ready. I haven't even cleaned the salt block yet but it look like it's going to be a trial. The chicken taste fantastic but it's not worth an hour and 15 minutes of my time

Just received a salt block that was going to be thrown away. Now wondering 🤔. Loved your sassy but sensible approach and the fact that you are filming from inside a camper. Also that you have the Batman intro. Well done and very helpful vid. Thanks!

Haha! Thank you for getting my sense of humor. Not everyone does. I get a fair bit of hate from people invested in their salt block lol. Grind it up and just use it to season!

You are right that salt blocks are pretty much just a gimmick. Cooking on them is entirely just a gimmick, but there can be some kind of practical uses for them. If you still have yours, try to use it during prep to season meats before you cook them. It can have an impact on the water content on the outside layer of the meat, making it easier to get a sear without using as much oil when cooking. It also seasons the meat evenly since its just a flat surface of salt. If you have two block you can sandwich tomatoes in between and get sundried tomatoes if you leave them in the sun during summer. None of this is completely practical, but it can be fun to play around with different ideas while using them. Cooking on them is really dumb though lol, they can sometimes explode because of the gases trapped inside expanding during rapid heating.

Man, ma whife has been pressuring me to use ours (gift from he brother who’s an awesome guy) and as a bbq backyard, didn’t marry until 33 guy who cooks pretty well, this made no sense. Thanks for the lifetime supply of salt idea!

I got a salt block as a christmas gift, so admittedly I'm biased towards wanting it to work well. Haven't used it yet, but certainly I don't expect it to be some groundbreaking thing. Nor do i care about the more woo-y type things people say about pink salt. At this point I'm torn between using it solely as a raw foods item great for serving. Such as sushi, cured meats, fruits. That way it maintains it's look which is IMO the best selling point about it. The alternative is using it as a cooking device, but I'd probably limit its use to fish/shrimp/scallops or something like tenderloin steak where I mostly want to sear it.

Enjoy! Nothing wrong with experimenting, especially if it was a gift! Lol and not like me who spent $40 on salt hahaha!

You know, I don’t think I’d use it for cooking but as a man who loves his salt think I just love to have a plate made out of it😂

😂! Got mine at Goodwill for $7.99 three-years-ago and used it once... chicken strips were so salty I drank a whole gallon of milk after eating it! I still have it - now I know what to do with it after watching your vid (lifetime supply of salt)... Thanks! 😂 Love your authenticity vids - this one was a scream - they shine!

In essence, in the long term it is important to eat healthy. Meat cooked on a salt plate is definitely healthier than meat fried in oil. I think that if you made a sauce with butter, spices and garlic to spread the meat cooked on salt, it would be much tastier. Choose to eat healthy, the results are not visible now but will be seen in time. Good health!

It was seasoned but how can you put butter on it without it running off and starting a fire?? Upstairs for thinking, downstairs for dancing.
